    Study of Obstacle effect on the GPSR protocol and a Novel Intelligent Greedy Routing protocol for VANETs

    In recent years, connected vehicle technologies have been developed by automotive companies, academia, and researchers as part of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This group of stakeholders continue to work on these technologies to make them as reliable and cost-effective as possible. This attention is because of the increasing connected vehicles safety-related, entertainment, and traffic management applications, which have the potential to decrease the number of road accidents, save fuel and time for millions of daily commuters worldwide. Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET), which is a subgroup of Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET), is being developed and implemented in vehicles as the critical structure for connected vehicles applications. VANET provides a promising concept to reduce the number of fatalities caused by road accidents, to improve traffic efficiency, and to provide infotainment. To support the increasing number of safety-related applications, VANETs are required to perform reliably. Since VANETs promise numerous safety applications requiring time-bound delivery of data packets, it is also necessary to replicate real-world scenarios in simulations as accurately as possible. Taking into account the effect of realistic obstacles while simulating a variety of case scenarios increases the reliability of the tested routing protocol to appropriately perform in real-world situations. It also exposes routing protocols to possible vulnerabilities caused by obstacles. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for researchers to omit real-world physical layer communication hurdles in simulation-based tests, including not considering the effect of obstacles on their routing protocol performance evaluation simulations. Consequently, the performance of these protocols is usually overestimated and do not support in real-world environment. Failure to account for obstacle effects overstate the network performance. In this thesis, a framework for measuring obstacle effects on routing protocols is defined. We also propose, a new routing protocol based on the traditional Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR) protocol called Intelligent Greedy Routing (IGR) protocol. The proposed IGR protocol considers a parameter called ReceptivityReceptivity to chose the next hop in a route. We implemented the new protocol using the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and the Network Simulator (NS-3). An analysis of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), End-to-End Delay (E2ED) and Mean Hop count with the assumption that nodes (vehicles) are moving in various topologies is presented in this thesis. The study presented here gives a general idea of the effects of obstacles on the Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR) protocol considering multiple realistic scenarios such as Urban, Residential and Highway. In addition, we compare the performance of GPSR and the new IGR protocols with the presence of obstacles considering various topologies. The new proposed IGR protocol performs better compared to the traditional GPSR for all the investigated metrics

Nowadays, IoV has turned into an interesting field of research as vehicles can be equipped with processors, sensors, and communication devices. IoV gives rise to handoff, which involves changing the connection points during the online communication session. This presents a major challenge for which many standardized solutions are recommended. Although there are various proposed techniques and methods to support seamless handover procedure in IoV, there are still some open research issues, such as unavoidable packet loss rate and latency. On the other hand, the emerged concept of edge mobile computing has gained crucial attention by researchers that could help in reducing computational complexities and decreasing communication delay. Hence, this paper specifically studies the handoff challenges in cluster based handoff using new concept of dynamic edge-backup node. The outcomes are evaluated and contrasted with the network mobility method, our proposed technique, and other cluster-based technologies. The results show that coherence in communication during the handoff method can be upgraded, enhanced, and improved utilizing the proposed technique.Published onlin

    DESIGN OF EFFICIENT IN-NETWORK DATA PROCESSING AND DISSEMINATION FOR VANETS

    By providing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure wireless communications, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), also known as the “networks on wheels”, can greatly enhance traffic safety, traffic efficiency and driving experience for intelligent transportation system (ITS). However, the unique features of VANETs, such as high mobility and uneven distribution of vehicular nodes, impose critical challenges of high efficiency and reliability for the implementation of VANETs. This dissertation is motivated by the great application potentials of VANETs in the design of efficient in-network data processing and dissemination. Considering the significance of message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, this dissertation research targets at enhancing the traffic safety and traffic efficiency, as well as developing novel commercial applications, based on VANETs, following four aspects: 1) accurate and efficient message aggregation to detect on-road safety relevant events, 2) reliable data dissemination to reliably notify remote vehicles, 3) efficient and reliable spatial data collection from vehicular sensors, and 4) novel promising applications to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs. Specifically, to enable cooperative detection of safety relevant events on the roads, the structure-less message aggregation (SLMA) scheme is proposed to improve communication efficiency and message accuracy. The scheme of relative position based message dissemination (RPB-MD) is proposed to reliably and efficiently disseminate messages to all intended vehicles in the zone-of-relevance in varying traffic density. Due to numerous vehicular sensor data available based on VANETs, the scheme of compressive sampling based data collection (CS-DC) is proposed to efficiently collect the spatial relevance data in a large scale, especially in the dense traffic. In addition, with novel and efficient solutions proposed for the application specific issues of data dissemination and data collection, several appealing value-added applications for VANETs are developed to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs, namely general purpose automatic survey (GPAS), VANET-based ambient ad dissemination (VAAD) and VANET based vehicle performance monitoring and analysis (VehicleView). Thus, by improving the efficiency and reliability in in-network data processing and dissemination, including message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, together with the development of novel promising applications, this dissertation will help push VANETs further to the stage of massive deployment

    Situational Awareness Enhancement for Connected and Automated Vehicle Systems

    Recent developments in the area of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) have boosted the interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). While ITS is intended to resolve and mitigate serious traffic issues such as passenger and pedestrian fatalities, accidents, and traffic congestion; these goals are only achievable by vehicles that are fully aware of their situation and surroundings in real-time. Therefore, connected and automated vehicle systems heavily rely on communication technologies to create a real-time map of their surrounding environment and extend their range of situational awareness. In this dissertation, we propose novel approaches to enhance situational awareness, its applications, and effective sharing of information among vehicles.;The communication technology for CAVs is known as vehicle-to-everything (V2x) communication, in which vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) have been targeted for the first round of deployment based on dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) devices for vehicles and road-side transportation infrastructures. Wireless communication among these entities creates self-organizing networks, known as Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). Due to the mobile, rapidly changing, and intrinsically error-prone nature of VANETs, traditional network architectures are generally unsatisfactory to address VANETs fundamental performance requirements. Therefore, we first investigate imperfections of the vehicular communication channel and propose a new modeling scheme for large-scale and small-scale components of the communication channel in dense vehicular networks. Subsequently, we introduce an innovative method for a joint modeling of the situational awareness and networking components of CAVs in a single framework. Based on these two models, we propose a novel network-aware broadcast protocol for fast broadcasting of information over multiple hops to extend the range of situational awareness. Afterward, motivated by the most common and injury-prone pedestrian crash scenarios, we extend our work by proposing an end-to-end Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) framework to provide situational awareness and hazard detection for vulnerable road users. Finally, as humans are the most spontaneous and influential entity for transportation systems, we design a learning-based driver behavior model and integrate it into our situational awareness component. Consequently, higher accuracy of situational awareness and overall system performance are achieved by exchange of more useful information

    Inter-Vehicle Communications have recently attracted the attention of researchers in academia and industry. In such networks, vehicles should be able to communicate among each other (V2V) as well as with roadside Infrastructure units (V2I). Vehicular networks try to provide safety on the roads by disseminating critical messages among vehicles. Infrastructure units provide some services such as driver information systems and Internet access. Because of the high speed and high mobility of vehicles, establishing and maintaining a connection to these units is very challenging. We introduce a new protocol that uses the characteristics of vehicle movements to predict the vehicle behavior and select a route with the longest life-time to connect to the wired network. It aims at spreading the advertisement messages through multi-hops without flooding the network, do seamless hand-overs and select the most stable routes to these units. We performed some simulations and compared the performance of our work with some well-known protocols

Developing algorithms that createstable clustersis avery challenging procedure because of the highly dynamic movingpatterns of vehicles and the dense topology. Previous approachesto vehicle clustering have been based on either topology-agnosticfeatures, such as vehicle IDs, on hard to set parameters, orhave exploited very limited knowledge of vehicle trajectories.This article develops a pair of algorithms, namelySociologicalPattern Clustering (SPC), andRoute Stability Clustering (RSC),the latter being a specialization of the former that exploit, forthe first time in the relevant literature, the “social behavior”of vehicles, i.e. their tendency to share the same/similar routes.Both methods exploit the historic trajectories of vehiclesgatheredby road-side units located in each subnetwork of a city, anduse the recently introduced clustering primitive ofvirtual forces.The mobility, i.e. mobile patterns of each vehicle are modeledas semi-Markov processes. In order to assess the performanceof the proposed clustering algorithms, we performed a detailedexperimentation by simulation to compare its behavior withthat of high-performance state-of-the-art algorithms, namely, theLow-Id,DDVCandMPBCprotocols. The comparison involvedthe investigation of the impact of a range of parameters onthe performance of the protocols, including vehicle speed andtransmission range as well as the existence and strength of socialpatterns, for both urban and highway-like environments.
