    Academia has peculiar networking needs that must be satisfied for effective dissemination of knowledge. The main purpose of a campus network is efficient resource sharing and access to information among its users. A key issue with designing and implementing such Local Area Networks (LAN) is its performance under ever increasing network traffic, and how this is affected by various network metrics such as latency and end-to-end delay. Implementation of network systems is a complex and expensive task; hence network simulation has become essential and has proven to be cost effective and highly useful for modeling the desired characteristics and analyzing performance under different scenarios. As well as providing useful prognosis of future network performance based on current expansion dynamics.     Alternative Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (AMSTP) for Optical Ethernet Backbones

    The availability and affordable cost of Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches has impacted the deployment of metropolitan area networks (MAN) and campus networks. This paper presents a new protocol, the alternative multiple spanning tree protocol (AMSTP), that uses multiple source based spanning trees for backbones using Ethernet switches. It provides minimum paths and more efficient usage of optical backbone infrastructure than currently proposed protocols such as resilient packet ring and rapid spanning tree. The protocol exhibits features similar to MAC routing protocols like Link State Over MAC (LSOM) such as optimum path and effective infrastructure usage, without requiring MAC routing due to the use of the spanning tree protocol paradigm. AMSTP is not restricted to specific topologies such as ring or tree, but performs efficiently in arbitrary topologies. Among the application areas are optical backbones of campus and MANs.Publicad

    Wireless industrial monitoring and control networks: the journey so far and the road ahead

    While traditional wired communication technologies have played a crucial role in industrial monitoring and control networks over the past few decades, they are increasingly proving to be inadequate to meet the highly dynamic and stringent demands of today’s industrial applications, primarily due to the very rigid nature of wired infrastructures. Wireless technology, however, through its increased pervasiveness, has the potential to revolutionize the industry, not only by mitigating the problems faced by wired solutions, but also by introducing a completely new class of applications. While present day wireless technologies made some preliminary inroads in the monitoring domain, they still have severe limitations especially when real-time, reliable distributed control operations are concerned. This article provides the reader with an overview of existing wireless technologies commonly used in the monitoring and control industry. It highlights the pros and cons of each technology and assesses the degree to which each technology is able to meet the stringent demands of industrial monitoring and control networks. Additionally, it summarizes mechanisms proposed by academia, especially serving critical applications by addressing the real-time and reliability requirements of industrial process automation. The article also describes certain key research problems from the physical layer communication for sensor networks and the wireless networking perspective that have yet to be addressed to allow the successful use of wireless technologies in industrial monitoring and control networks

    An Efficient Medium Access Control Strategy for High Speed WDM Multiaccess Networks

    A medium access control (MAC) strategy that accounts for the limited tunability of present-day lasers and filters and yet supports a large total number of wavelengths in the network is proposed. Full interconnectivity, contention-free access and a high value of concurrency are achieved by dividing the network into disjunct subnetworks on a wavelength basis and by reconfiguring these subnetworks on a time basis. Each subnetwork allows for simplified access to be implemented with fast tunable transceivers each assessing only a moderate number of wavelengths.     The structure of Inter-Urban traffic: A weighted network analysis

    We study the structure of the network representing the interurban commuting traffic of the Sardinia region, Italy, which amounts to 375 municipalities and 1,600,000 inhabitants. We use a weighted network representation where vertices correspond to towns and the edges to the actual commuting flows among those. We characterize quantitatively both the topological and weighted properties of the resulting network. Interestingly, the statistical properties of commuting traffic exhibit complex features and non-trivial relations with the underlying topology. We characterize quantitatively the traffic backbone among large cities and we give evidences for a very high heterogeneity of the commuter flows around large cities. We also discuss the interplay between the topological and dynamical properties of the network as well as their relation with socio-demographic variables such as population and monthly income. This analysis may be useful at various stages in environmental planning and provides analytical tools for a wide spectrum of applications ranging from impact evaluation to decision-making and planning support.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables; 1 missing ref added and minor revision
