    Study on Leading Vehicle Detection at Night Based on Multisensor and Image Enhancement Method

    Low visibility is one of the reasons for rear accident at night. In this paper, we propose a method to detect the leading vehicle based on multisensor to decrease rear accidents at night. Then, we use image enhancement algorithm to improve the human vision. First, by millimeter wave radar to get the world coordinate of the preceding vehicles and establish the transformation of the relationship between the world coordinate and image pixels coordinate, we can convert the world coordinates of the radar target to image coordinate in order to form the region of interesting image. And then, by using the image processing method, we can reduce interference from the outside environment. Depending on D-S evidence theory, we can achieve a general value of reliability to test vehicles of interest. The experimental results show that the method can effectively eliminate the influence of illumination condition at night, accurately detect leading vehicles, and determine their location and accurate positioning. In order to improve nighttime driving, the driver shortage vision, reduce rear-end accident. Enhancing nighttime color image by three algorithms, a comparative study and evaluation by three algorithms are presented. The evaluation demonstrates that results after image enhancement satisfy the human visual habits

    In Chapter one, research background and significance is investigated. In addition, previous studies and current situation in the research fields was reviewed and discussed. In Chapter two, an in-depth review of prior studies associated with the research topic was conducted. The literature review was carried out from three aspects: urbanization and eco-environment evalution and coordination, urban sprawl assessment and urban heat island investigation. In Chapter three, maximum entropy method was applied to help generate the evaluation system of eco-environment level and urbanization level at provincial scale. Comparison analysis and coordinate analysis was carried through to assess the development of urbanization and eco-environment as well as the balance and health degree of the city develops. In Chapter four, DMSP/OLS stable nighttime light dataset was used to measure and assess the urban dynamics from the extraction of built up area. Urban sprawl was evaluated by analyzing the landscape metrics which provided general understanding of the urban sprawl and distribution pattern characteristics could be got from the evaluation. In Chapter five, the investigation of surface urban heat island effects in Beijing city which derive from land surface temperature retrieval from remote sensing data of Landsat TM was carried out. In addition, spatial correlation and relationship between the urbanization level, vegetation coverage and surface urban heat island was carried out in this chapter.     Application of Image Processing and Three-Dimensional Data Reconstruction Algorithm Based on Traffic Video in Vehicle Component Detection

    Vehicle detection is one of the important technologies in intelligent video surveillance systems. Owing to the perspective projection imaging principle of cameras, traditional two-dimensional (2D) images usually distort the size and shape of vehicles. In order to solve these problems, the traffic scene calibration and inverse projection construction methods are used to project the three-dimensional (3D) information onto the 2D images. In addition, a vehicle target can be characterized by several components, and thus vehicle detection can be fulfilled based on the combination of these components. The key characteristics of vehicle targets are distinct during a single day; for example, the headlight brightness is more significant at night, while the vehicle taillight and license plate color are much more prominent in the daytime. In this paper, by using the background subtraction method and Gaussian mixture model, we can realize the accurate detection of target lights at night. In the daytime, however, the detection of the license plate and taillight of a vehicle can be fulfilled by exploiting the background subtraction method and the Markov random field, based on the spatial geometry relation between the corresponding components. Further, by utilizing Kalman filters to follow the vehicle tracks, detection accuracy can be further improved. Finally, experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods

    A Neural network approach to visibility range estimation under foggy weather conditions

The degradation of visibility due to foggy weather conditions is a common trigger for road accidents and, as a result, there has been a growing interest to develop intelligent fog detection and visibility range estimation systems. In this contribution, we provide a brief overview of the state-of-the-art contributions in relation to estimating visibility distance under foggy weather conditions. We then present a neural network approach for estimating visibility distances using a camera that can be fixed to a roadside unit (RSU) or mounted onboard a moving vehicle. We evaluate the proposed solution using a diverse set of images under various fog density scenarios. Our approach shows very promising results that outperform the classical method of estimating the maximum distance at which a selected target can be seen. The originality of the approach stems from the usage of a single camera and a neural network learning phase based on a hybrid global feature descriptor. The proposed method can be applied to support next-generation cooperative hazard & incident warning systems based on I2V, I2I and V2V communications.     Business Category Classification via Indistinctive Satellite Image Analysis Using Deep Learning

    Satellite image analysis has numerous useful applications in various domains. Extracting their visual information has been made easier using remote sensing and deep learning technologies that intelligently interpret clear visual cues. However, satellite information has the potential for more complex tasks, such as recommending business locations and categories based on the implicit patterns and structures of the regions of interest. Nonetheless, this task is significantly more challenging due to the absence of obvious visual cues and the highly similar appearance of each location. This study aims to analyze satellite image similarity between business class categories and investigate the capabilities of state-of-the-art deep learning models for learning non-obvious visual cues. Specifically, a satellite image dataset is constructed using business locations and annotated with the business categories for image structural similarity analysis, followed by business category classification via fine-tuning of deep learning classifiers. The models are then analyzed by visualizing the features learned to determine if they could capture hidden information for such a task. Experiments show that business locations have significantly high SSIM regardless of categories, and deep learning models only recorded a top accuracy of 60%. However, feature visualization using Grad-CAM shows that the models learn biased features and disregard highly informative details such as roads. It is concluded that typical learning models and strategies are insufficient to effectively solve this complex visual problem; thus, further research should be done to formulate solutions for such non-obvious classifications with the potential to support business recommendation applications
