Evolutionary Robot Vision for People Tracking Based on Local Clustering
This paper discusses the role of evolutionary computation in visual perception for partner robots. The search of evolutionary computation has many analogies with human visual search. First of all, we discuss the analogies between the evolutionary search and human visual search. Next, we propose the concept of evolutionary robot vision, and a human tracking method based on the evolutionary robot vision. Finally, we show experimental results of the human tracking to discuss the effectiveness of our proposed method
Efficiency Analysis of Swarm Intelligence and Randomization Techniques
Swarm intelligence has becoming a powerful technique in solving design and
scheduling tasks. Metaheuristic algorithms are an integrated part of this
paradigm, and particle swarm optimization is often viewed as an important
landmark. The outstanding performance and efficiency of swarm-based algorithms
inspired many new developments, though mathematical understanding of
metaheuristics remains partly a mystery. In contrast to the classic
deterministic algorithms, metaheuristics such as PSO always use some form of
randomness, and such randomization now employs various techniques. This paper
intends to review and analyze some of the convergence and efficiency associated
with metaheuristics such as firefly algorithm, random walks, and L\'evy
flights. We will discuss how these techniques are used and their implications
for further research.Comment: 10 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

Optimisation of Mobile Communication Networks - OMCO NET
The mini conference “Optimisation of Mobile Communication Networks” focuses on advanced methods for search and optimisation applied to wireless communication networks. It is sponsored by Research & Enterprise Fund Southampton Solent University.
The conference strives to widen knowledge on advanced search methods capable of optimisation of wireless communications networks. The aim is to provide a forum for exchange of recent knowledge, new ideas and trends in this progressive and challenging area. The conference will popularise new successful approaches on resolving hard tasks such as minimisation of transmit power, cooperative and optimal routing
Cuckoo Search via Levy Flights
In this paper, we intend to formulate a new metaheuristic algorithm, called
Cuckoo Search (CS), for solving optimization problems. This algorithm is based
on the obligate brood parasitic behaviour of some cuckoo species in combination
with the Levy flight behaviour of some birds and fruit flies. We validate the
proposed algorithm against test functions and then compare its performance with
those of genetic algorithms and particle swarm optimization. Finally, we
discuss the implication of the results and suggestion for further research
Collaborative signal and information processing for target detection with heterogeneous sensor networks
In this paper, an approach for target detection and acquisition with heterogeneous sensor networks through strategic resource allocation and coordination is presented. Based on sensor management and collaborative signal and information processing, low-capacity low-cost sensors are strategically deployed to guide and cue scarce high performance sensors in the network to improve the data quality, with which the mission is eventually completed more efficiently with lower cost. We focus on the problem of designing such a network system in which issues of resource selection and allocation, system behaviour and capacity, target behaviour and patterns, the environment, and multiple constraints such as the cost must be addressed simultaneously. Simulation results offer significant insight into sensor selection and network operation, and demonstrate the great benefits introduced by guided search in an application of hunting down and capturing hostile vehicles on the battlefield
Swarm Intelligence
Swarm Intelligence has emerged as one of the most studied artificial intelligence branches during the last decade, constituting the fastest growing stream in the bio-inspired computation community. A clear trend can be deduced analyzing some of the most renowned scientific databases available, showing that the interest aroused by this branch has increased at a notable pace in the last years. This book describes the prominent theories and recent developments of Swarm Intelligence methods, and their application in all fields covered by engineering. This book unleashes a great opportunity for researchers, lecturers, and practitioners interested in Swarm Intelligence, optimization problems, and artificial intelligence
Adaptive particle swarm optimization
An adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO) that features better search efficiency than classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) is presented. More importantly, it can perform a global search over the entire search space with faster convergence speed. The APSO consists of two main steps. First, by evaluating the population distribution and particle fitness, a real-time evolutionary state estimation procedure is performed to identify one of the following four defined evolutionary states, including exploration, exploitation, convergence, and jumping out in each generation. It enables the automatic control of inertia weight, acceleration coefficients, and other algorithmic parameters at run time to improve the search efficiency and convergence speed. Then, an elitist learning strategy is performed when the evolutionary state is classified as convergence state. The strategy will act on the globally best particle to jump out of the likely local optima. The APSO has comprehensively been evaluated on 12 unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions. The effects of parameter adaptation and elitist learning will be studied. Results show that APSO substantially enhances the performance of the PSO paradigm in terms of convergence speed, global optimality, solution accuracy, and algorithm reliability. As APSO introduces two new parameters to the PSO paradigm only, it does not introduce an additional design or implementation complexity
