    Towards a multimedia formatting vocabulary

Time-based, media-centric Web presentations can be described declaratively in the XML world through the development of languages such as SMIL. It is difficult, however, to fully integrate them in a complete document transformation processing chain. In order to achieve the desired processing of data-driven, time-based, media-centric presentations, the text-flow based formatting vocabularies used by style languages such as XSL, CSS and DSSSL need to be extended. The paper presents a selection of use cases which are used to derive a list of requirements for a multimedia style and transformation formatting vocabulary. The boundaries of applicability of existing text-based formatting models for media-centric transformations are analyzed. The paper then discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a fully-fledged time-based multimedia formatting model. Finally, the discussion is illustrated by describing the key properties of the example multimedia formatting vocabulary currently implemented in the back-end of our Cuypers multimedia transformation engine

Using the semantic web to navigate conceptual spaces: an application for the philosophical domain

    Get PDF
The semantic web offers new possibilities in the eLearning area, which are dependent at least on two factors: the increasing availability of resources on the web and the semantic power of their meta-descriptions. This paper looks at this second issue, and tries to determine the general framework and the important features of the metadata for a specific domain, philosophy. Thanks to an adequate conceptualization, in fact, it is possible to recollect resources and compose them into a novel narrative, in order to provide specific learning services

Methods and Technologies for Digital Preservation of Analog Audio Collections

    Get PDF
This paper is a consideration of some of the challenges libraries and other institutions face in the digitization of analog audio collections for preservation and access. The intent of this study is to demonstrate that such an existing analog audio collection can be digitized, described, stored, and preserved using currently available and emerging technologies. Consideration was accorded to a broad range of topics related to the creation of enduring digital audio collections. It is hoped that this effort will illuminate possible paths to successful preservation of audio collections while also vastly improving access to them. Furthermore, the study will demonstrate that libraries and other institutions that possess similar multimedia assets may have access to effective and economical means of transforming isolated and moribund materials into persistent, valuable, and widely available multimedia documents

A component framework for personalized multimedia applications
