    Towards a Consumer Cloud Computing Maturity Model - Proposition of Development Guidelines, Maturity Domains and Maturity Levels

    In recent years, Cloud Computing (CC) has transformed from a new trend to IT management reality. Its potential promises to significantly change computing and benefit many organisations but at the same time uncertainty and the need for managerial guidance prevail. To benefit from the opportunities that CC promises, organisations need to adapt to the new circumstances that this phenomenon triggers and develop new capabilities. Maturity models have shown to be an excellent and easily applicable tool for the assessment and improvement of capabilities. However, there is no fully developed and universally accepted CC maturity model (CCMM) so far. Through the execution of a maturity model development process, this contribution is aiming at deriving development guidelines for the future development of a holistic consumer CCMM. Additionally, content and structure in the form of maturity domains and maturity levels are proposed throughout the development process, the combination of which represents the first steps towards a holistic consumer CCMM

    ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Also, this paper aims also at the professional ERP community involved in the process of ERP implementation by promoting a better understanding of ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks, its variety and history

    Maturity Models Architecture: A large systematic mapping

    Maturity models are widespread in research and in particular, IT practitioner communities. However, theoretically sound, methodologically rigorous and empirically validated maturity models are quite rare.  This systematic mapping paper focuses on the challenges faced during the development of maturity models. More specifically, it explores the literature on maturity models and standard guidelines to develop maturity models, the challenges identified and solutions proposed.  Our systematic mapping  revealed over six hundred articles on maturity models. Extant literature reveals that researchers have primarily focused on developing new maturity models pertaining to domain-specific problems and/or new enterprise technologies. We find rampant re-use of the design structure of widely adopted models such as Nolan’s Stage of Growth Model, Crosby’s Grid, and Capability Maturity Model (CMM). We also identify three dominant views of maturity models and provide guidelines for various approaches to constructing maturity models with a standard vocabulary. We finally propose using process theories and configurational approaches to address the main theoretical criticisms with regard to maturity models and conclude with some recommendations for maturity model developers

    Does Virtualization Capability Maturity Influence Information Systems Development Performance? Theorizing The Non-Linear Payoffs

    Firms are increasingly relying on digital transformation and virtualization of physical IT assets to develop information systems projects. However, the assessment of this virtualization on the performance of information systems development (ISD) projects is still unclear. Drawing upon the theories of radical innovation and process virtualization, we develop and empirically test a research model describing the relationships of virtualization capability maturity (VCM) with ISD project performance. Our findings show inverted U-shaped relationships of VCM with both ISD process and product performance. Interestingly, ISD projects achieve performance improvements as they progress incrementally from VCM levels of 0 to 2, but at VCM level 3 performance declines. Also, we observe that at higher levels of VCM, ISD process performance declines more rapidly than ISD product performance and the resources spent on ISD project execution increases non-linearly with increasing levels of VCM. Implications of these results are discussed

    Digital Transformation: A Cognitive Study for Organizations to Shape their Journeys

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reveal novelties of digital transformation with a holistic approach based on expert experience, that may help digital business leaders to shape their digital transformation journeys.   Theoretical framework: With the acceleration of technological advancements, the complexity of digital transformation is increasing and it leads to novel impacts. As expected, this raises the difficulty of developing a final methodology. Therefore, there is still more research required to explore these novelties.   Design/methodology/approach: As a basis, existing maturity models and frameworks were inspected. Then, C-Level managers were interviewed to explore the novelties. Axial and selective coding was used to interpret the interview data. Findings: Findings showed that digital transformation is not only about digital technologies but also the transformation of business models and cultural change. In addition, technologies like 5th-generation networks (5G), quantum computing, and blockchain may affect these models more in the future. Organizations may have to consider law regulations, hiring, management support, and customer experience more, to do a successful digital transformation.   Research, Practical & Social implications: Future research is recommended to bring more practitioner experience to the theory and highlight the cultural effects of digital transformation for organizations.   Originality/value: The results show that the complex nature of digital transformation both requires and causes the number of publications to grow exponentially. Also, this can help business leaders to make use of the results to improve their digital transformation strategies

    Business process management and digital innovations : a systematic literature review

    Emerging technologies have capabilities to reshape business process management (BPM) from its traditional version to a more explorative variant. However, to exploit the full benefits of new IT, it is essential to reveal BPM’s research potential and to detect recent trends in practice. Therefore, this work presents a systematic literature review (SLR) with 231 recent academic articles (from 2014 until May 2019) that integrate BPM with digital innovations (DI). We position those articles against seven future BPM-DI trends that were inductively derived from an expert panel. By complementing the expected trends in practice with a state-of-the-art literature review, we are able to derive covered and uncovered themes in order to help bridge a rigor-relevance gap. The major technological impacts within the BPM field seem to focus on value creation, customer engagement and managing human-centric and knowledge-intensive business processes. Finally, our findings are categorized into specific calls for research and for action to let scholars and organizations better prepare for future digital needs

    Contextual impacts on industrial processes brought by the digital transformation of manufacturing: a systematic review

    The digital transformation of manufacturing (a phenomenon also known as "Industry 4.0" or "Smart Manufacturing") is finding a growing interest both at practitioner and academic levels, but is still in its infancy and needs deeper investigation. Even though current and potential advantages of digital manufacturing are remarkable, in terms of improved efficiency, sustainability, customization, and flexibility, only a limited number of companies has already developed ad hoc strategies necessary to achieve a superior performance. Through a systematic review, this study aims at assessing the current state of the art of the academic literature regarding the paradigm shift occurring in the manufacturing settings, in order to provide definitions as well as point out recurring patterns and gaps to be addressed by future research. For the literature search, the most representative keywords, strict criteria, and classification schemes based on authoritative reference studies were used. The final sample of 156 primary publications was analyzed through a systematic coding process to identify theoretical and methodological approaches, together with other significant elements. This analysis allowed a mapping of the literature based on clusters of critical themes to synthesize the developments of different research streams and provide the most representative picture of its current state. Research areas, insights, and gaps resulting from this analysis contributed to create a schematic research agenda, which clearly indicates the space for future evolutions of the state of knowledge in this field

    Business processes are the backbone of any Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation. Business process modelling (BPM) has become essential for modern, process driven enterprises due to the vibrant business environments. As a consequence enterprises are dealing with a substantial rate of organizational and business processes change. Business process modelling enables a common understanding and analysis of the business processes, which is the first step in every ERP implementation methodology (blueprint phase). In order to represent enterprise processes models in an accurate manner, it is paramount to choose a right business process modeling technique and tool. The problem of many ERP projects rated as unsuccessful is directly connected to a lack of use of business process models and notations during the blueprint phase. Also, blueprint implementation phase is crucial in order to fit planned processes in an organization with processes implemented in the solution. However, business analysts and ERP implementation professionals have substantial difficulties to navigate through a large number of theoretical models and representational notations that have been proposed for business process modeling (BPM). As the availability of different business process modeling references is huge, it is time consuming to make review and classification of all modeling techniques. Therefor, in reality majority of ERP implementations blueprint documents have no business process modeling included in generating blueprint documents. Choosing the right model comprise the purpose of the analysis and acquaintance of the available process modelling techniques and tools. The number of references on business modelling is quit large, so it is very hard to make a decision which modeling notation or technique to use. The main purpose of this paper is to make a review of business process modelling literature and describe the key process modelling techniques. The focus will be on all business process modeling that could be used in ERP implementations, specifically during the blueprint phase of the implementation process. Detailed review of BPM (Business process modeling) theoretical models and representational notations, should assist decision makers and ERP integrators in comparatively evaluating and selecting suitable modeling approaches
