Investigating the use of semantic technologies in spatial mapping applications
Semantic Web Technologies are ideally suited to build context-aware information retrieval applications. However, the geospatial aspect of context awareness presents unique challenges such as the semantic modelling of geographical references for efficient handling of spatial queries, the reconciliation of the heterogeneity at the semantic and geo-representation levels, maintaining the quality of service and scalability of communicating, and the efficient rendering of the spatial queries' results. In this paper, we describe the modelling decisions taken to solve these challenges by analysing our implementation of an intelligent planning and recommendation tool that provides location-aware advice for a specific application domain. This paper contributes to the methodology of integrating heterogeneous geo-referenced data into semantic knowledgebases, and also proposes mechanisms for efficient spatial interrogation of the semantic knowledgebase and optimising the rendering of the dynamically retrieved context-relevant information on a web frontend
Towards a Cloud-Based Service for Maintaining and Analyzing Data About Scientific Events
We propose the new cloud-based service OpenResearch for managing and
analyzing data about scientific events such as conferences and workshops in a
persistent and reliable way. This includes data about scientific articles,
participants, acceptance rates, submission numbers, impact values as well as
organizational details such as program committees, chairs, fees and sponsors.
OpenResearch is a centralized repository for scientific events and supports
researchers in collecting, organizing, sharing and disseminating information
about scientific events in a structured way. An additional feature currently
under development is the possibility to archive web pages along with the
extracted semantic data in order to lift the burden of maintaining new and old
conference web sites from public research institutions. However, the main
advantage is that this cloud-based repository enables a comprehensive analysis
of conference data. Based on extracted semantic data, it is possible to
determine quality estimations, scientific communities, research trends as well
the development of acceptance rates, fees, and number of participants in a
continuous way complemented by projections into the future. Furthermore, data
about research articles can be systematically explored using a content-based
analysis as well as citation linkage. All data maintained in this
crowd-sourcing platform is made freely available through an open SPARQL
endpoint, which allows for analytical queries in a flexible and user-defined

Semantic web technology to support learning about the semantic web
This paper describes ASPL, an Advanced Semantic Platform for Learning, designed using the Magpie framework with an aim to support students learning about the Semantic Web research area. We describe the evolution of ASPL and illustrate how we used the results from a formal evaluation of the initial system to re-design the user functionalities. The second version of ASPL semantically interprets the results provided by a non-semantic web mining tool and uses them to support various forms of semantics-assisted exploration, based on pedagogical strategies such as performing later reasoning steps and problem space filtering
Unsupervised Visual and Textual Information Fusion in Multimedia Retrieval - A Graph-based Point of View
Multimedia collections are more than ever growing in size and diversity.
Effective multimedia retrieval systems are thus critical to access these
datasets from the end-user perspective and in a scalable way. We are interested
in repositories of image/text multimedia objects and we study multimodal
information fusion techniques in the context of content based multimedia
information retrieval. We focus on graph based methods which have proven to
provide state-of-the-art performances. We particularly examine two of such
methods : cross-media similarities and random walk based scores. From a
theoretical viewpoint, we propose a unifying graph based framework which
encompasses the two aforementioned approaches. Our proposal allows us to
highlight the core features one should consider when using a graph based
technique for the combination of visual and textual information. We compare
cross-media and random walk based results using three different real-world
datasets. From a practical standpoint, our extended empirical analysis allow us
to provide insights and guidelines about the use of graph based methods for
multimodal information fusion in content based multimedia information

Automatic annotation of bioinformatics workflows with biomedical ontologies
Legacy scientific workflows, and the services within them, often present
scarce and unstructured (i.e. textual) descriptions. This makes it difficult to
find, share and reuse them, thus dramatically reducing their value to the
community. This paper presents an approach to annotating workflows and their
subcomponents with ontology terms, in an attempt to describe these artifacts in
a structured way. Despite a dearth of even textual descriptions, we
automatically annotated 530 myExperiment bioinformatics-related workflows,
including more than 2600 workflow-associated services, with relevant
ontological terms. Quantitative evaluation of the Information Content of these
terms suggests that, in cases where annotation was possible at all, the

Supporting Semantically Enhanced Web Service Discovery for Enterprise Application Integration
The availability of sophisticated Web service discovery mechanisms is an essential prerequisite for increasing the levels of efficiency and automation in EAI. In this chapter, we present an approach for developing service registries building on the UDDI standard and offering semantically-enhanced publication and discovery capabilities in order to overcome some of the known limitations of conventional service registries. The approach aspires to promote efficiency in EAI in a number of ways, but primarily by automating the task of evaluating service integrability on the basis of the input and output messages that are defined in the Web service’s interface. The presented solution combines the use of three technology standards to meet its objectives: OWL-DL, for modelling service characteristics and performing fine-grained service matchmaking via DL reasoning, SAWSDL, for creating semantically annotated descriptions of service interfaces, and UDDI, for storing and retrieving syntactic and semantic information about services and service providers
BioSStore: A Client Interface for a Repository of Semantically Annotated Bioinformatics Web Services
Bioinformatics has shown itself to be a domain in which Web services are being used extensively. In this domain, simple but real services are being developed. Thus, there are huge repositories of real services available (for example BioMOBY main repository includes more than 1500 services). Besides, bioinformatics repositories usually have active communities using and working on improvements. However, these kinds of repositories do not exploit the full potential of Web services (and SOA, Service Oriented Applications, in general). On the other hand, sophisticated technologies have been proposed to improve SOA, including the annotation on Web services to explicitly describe them. However, these approaches are lacking in repositories with real services. In the work presented here, we address the drawbacks present in bioinformatics services and try to improve the current semantic model by introducing the use of the W3C standard Semantic Annotations for WSDL and XML Schema (SAWSDL) and related proposals (WSMO Lite). This paper focuses on a user interface that takes advantage of a repository of semantically annotated bioinformatics Web services. In this way, we exploit semantics for the discovery of Web services, showing how the use of semantics will improve the user searches. The BioSStore is available at http://biosstore.khaos.uma.es.
