    A best view selection in meetings through attention analysis using a multi-camera network

    Human activity analysis is an essential task in ambient intelligence and computer vision. The main focus lies in the automatic analysis of ongoing activities from a multi-camera network. One possible application is meeting analysis which explores the dynamics in meetings using low-level data and inferring high-level activities. However, the detection of such activities is still very challenging due to the often corrupted or imprecise low-level data. In this paper, we present an approach to understand the dynamics in meetings using a multi-camera network, consisting of fixed ambient and portable close-up cameras. As a particular application we are aiming to find the most informative video stream, for example as a representative view for a remote participant. Our contribution is threefold: at first, we estimate the extrinsic parameters of the portable close-up cameras based on head positions. Secondly, we find common overlapping areas based on the consensus of people’s orientation. And thirdly, the most informative view for a remote participant is estimated using common overlapping areas. We evaluated our proposed approach and compared it to a motion estimation method. Experimental results show that we can reach an accuracy of 74% compared to manually selected views

    A grid computing system is designed for solving complicated scientific and commercial problems effectively,whereas mobile computing is a traditional distributed system having computing capability with mobility and adopting wireless communications. Media and Entertainment fields can take advantage from both paradigms by applying its usage in gaming applications and multimedia data management. Multimedia data has to be stored and retrieved in an efficient and effective manner to put it in use. In this paper, we proposed an application layer protocol for delivery of multimedia data in wireless girds i.e. multimedia grid protocol (MMGP). To make streaming efficient a new video compression algorithm called dWave is designed and embedded in the proposed protocol.     Speaker-following Video Subtitles

    We propose a new method for improving the presentation of subtitles in video (e.g. TV and movies). With conventional subtitles, the viewer has to constantly look away from the main viewing area to read the subtitles at the bottom of the screen, which disrupts the viewing experience and causes unnecessary eyestrain. Our method places on-screen subtitles next to the respective speakers to allow the viewer to follow the visual content while simultaneously reading the subtitles. We use novel identification algorithms to detect the speakers based on audio and visual information. Then the placement of the subtitles is determined using global optimization. A comprehensive usability study indicated that our subtitle placement method outperformed both conventional fixed-position subtitling and another previous dynamic subtitling method in terms of enhancing the overall viewing experience and reducing eyestrain

    The VIA Annotation Software for Images, Audio and Video

    In this paper, we introduce a simple and standalone manual annotation tool for images, audio and video: the VGG Image Annotator (VIA). This is a light weight, standalone and offline software package that does not require any installation or setup and runs solely in a web browser. The VIA software allows human annotators to define and describe spatial regions in images or video frames, and temporal segments in audio or video. These manual annotations can be exported to plain text data formats such as JSON and CSV and therefore are amenable to further processing by other software tools. VIA also supports collaborative annotation of a large dataset by a group of human annotators.     Virtual lines, a deadlock free and real-time routing mechanism for ATM networks

    In this paper we present a routing mechanism and buffer allocation mechanism for an ATM switching fabric. Since the fabric will be used to transfer multimedia traffic it should provide a guaranteed throughput and a bounded latency. We focus on the design of a suitable routing mechanism that is capable to fulfil these requirements and is free of deadlocks. We will describe two basic concepts that can be used to implement deadlock free routing. Routing of messages is closely related to buffering. We have organized the buffers into parallel fifos, each representing a virtual line. In this way we not only have solved the problem of Head Of Line blocking, but we can also give real-time guarantees. We will show that for local high-speed networks it is more advantageous to have a proper flow control than to have large buffers. Although the virtual line concept can have a low buffer utilization, the transfer efficiency can be higher. The virtual lines concept allows adaptive routing. The total throughput of the network can be improved by using alternative routes. Adaptive routing is attractive in networks where alternative routes are not much longer than the initial route(s). The network of the switching fabric is built up from switching elements interconnected in a Kautz topology

    Transparent resource sharing framework for internet services on handheld devices

    Handheld devices have limited processing power and a short battery lifetime. As a result, computationally intensive applications cannot run appropriately or cause the device to run out of battery too early. Additionally, Internet-based service providers targeting these mobile devices lack information to estimate the remaining battery autonomy and have no view on the availability of idle resources in the neighborhood of the handheld device. These battery-related issues create an opportunity for Internet providers to broaden their role and start managing energy aspects of battery-driven mobile devices inside the home. In this paper, we propose an energy-aware resource-sharing framework that enables Internet access providers to delegate (a part of) a client application from a handheld device to idle resources in the LAN, in a transparent way for the end-user. The key component is the resource sharing service, hosted on the LAN gateway, which can be remotely queried and managed by the Internet access provider. The service includes a battery model to predict the remaining battery lifetime. We describe the concept of resource-sharing-as-a-service that allows users of handheld devices to subscribe to the resource sharing service. In a proof-of-concept, we evaluate the delay to offload a client application to an idle computer and study the impact on battery autonomy as a function of the CPU cycles that can be offloaded
