Followee recommendation based on text analysis of micro-blogging activity
Nowadays, more and more users keep up with news through information streams coming from real-time micro-blogging activity offered by services such as Twitter. In these sites, information is shared via a followers/followees social network structure in which a follower receives all the micro-blogs from his/her followees. Recent research efforts on understanding micro-blogging as a novel form of communication and news spreading medium, have identified three different categories of users in these systems: information sources, information seekers and friends. As social networks grow in the number of registered users, finding relevant and reliable users to receive interesting information becomes essential. In this paper we propose a followee recommender system based on both the analysis of the content of micro-blogs to detect users´ interests and in the exploration of the topology of the network to find candidate users for recommendation. Experimental evaluation was conducted in order to determine the impact of different profiling strategies based on the text analysis of micro-blogs as well as several factors that allows the identification of users acting as good information sources. We found that user-generated content available in the network is a rich source of information for profiling users and finding like-minded people.Fil: Armentano, Marcelo Gabriel. Most traditional recommendation systems only rely on content or topology, disregarding the effect of psychological characteristics over the followee selection process. Follow Whom? Chinese Users Have Different Choice
Sina Weibo, which was launched in 2009, is the most popular Chinese
micro-blogging service. It has been reported that Sina Weibo has more than 400
million registered users by the end of the third quarter in 2012. Sina Weibo
and Twitter have a lot in common, however, in terms of the following
preference, Sina Weibo users, most of whom are Chinese, behave differently
compared with those of Twitter.
This work is based on a data set of Sina Weibo which contains 80.8 million
users' profiles and 7.2 billion relations and a large data set of Twitter.
Firstly some basic features of Sina Weibo and Twitter are analyzed such as
degree and activeness distribution, correlation between degree and activeness,
and the degree of separation. Then the following preference is investigated by
studying the assortative mixing, friend similarities, following distribution,
edge balance ratio, and ranking correlation, where edge balance ratio is newly
proposed to measure balance property of graphs. It is found that Sina Weibo has
a lower reciprocity rate, more positive balanced relations and is more
disassortative. Coinciding with Asian traditional culture, the following
preference of Sina Weibo users is more concentrated and hierarchical: they are
more likely to follow people at higher or the same social levels and less
likely to follow people lower than themselves. In contrast, the same kind of
following preference is weaker in Twitter. Twitter users are open as they
follow people from levels, which accords with its global characteristic and the
prevalence of western civilization. The message forwarding behavior is studied
by displaying the propagation levels, delays, and critical users. The following
preference derives from not only the usage habits but also underlying reasons
such as personalities and social moralities that is worthy of future research.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure
The Web as an Adaptive Network: Coevolution of Web Behavior and Web Structure
Much is known about the complex network structure of the Web, and about behavioral dynamics on the Web. A number of studies address how behaviors on the Web are affected by different network topologies, whilst others address how the behavior of users on the Web alters network topology. These represent complementary directions of influence, but they are generally not combined within any one study. In network science, the study of the coupled interaction between topology and behavior, or state-topology coevolution, is known as 'adaptive networks', and is a rapidly developing area of research. In this paper, we review the case for considering the Web as an adaptive network and several examples of state-topology coevolution on the Web. We also review some abstract results from recent literature in adaptive networks and discuss their implications for Web Science. We conclude that adaptive networks provide a formal framework for characterizing processes acting 'on' and 'of' the Web, and offers potential for identifying general organizing principles that seem otherwise illusive in Web Scienc
Bloggers Behavior and Emergent Communities in Blog Space
Interactions between users in cyberspace may lead to phenomena different from
those observed in common social networks. Here we analyse large data sets about
users and Blogs which they write and comment, mapped onto a bipartite graph. In
such enlarged Blog space we trace user activity over time, which results in
robust temporal patterns of user--Blog behavior and the emergence of
communities. With the spectral methods applied to the projection on weighted
user network we detect clusters of users related to their common interests and
habits. Our results suggest that different mechanisms may play the role in the
case of very popular Blogs. Our analysis makes a suitable basis for theoretical
modeling of the evolution of cyber communities and for practical study of the
data, in particular for an efficient search of interesting Blog clusters and
further retrieval of their contents by text analysis

Advances in Social Media Research:Past, Present and Future
Social media comprises communication websites that facilitate relationship forming between users from diverse backgrounds, resulting in a rich social structure. User generated content encourages inquiry and decision-making. Given the relevance of social media to various stakeholders, it has received significant attention from researchers of various fields, including information systems. There exists no comprehensive review that integrates and synthesises the findings of literature on social media. This study discusses the findings of 132 papers (in selected IS journals) on social media and social networking published between 1997 and 2017. Most papers reviewed here examine the behavioural side of social media, investigate the aspect of reviews and recommendations, and study its integration for organizational purposes. Furthermore, many studies have investigated the viability of online communities/social media as a marketing medium, while others have explored various aspects of social media, including the risks associated with its use, the value that it creates, and the negative stigma attached to it within workplaces. The use of social media for information sharing during critical events as well as for seeking and/or rendering help has also been investigated in prior research. Other contexts include political and public administration, and the comparison between traditional and social media. Overall, our study identifies multiple emergent themes in the existing corpus, thereby furthering our understanding of advances in social media research. The integrated view of the extant literature that our study presents can help avoid duplication by future researchers, whilst offering fruitful lines of enquiry to help shape research for this emerging field
