The final publication is available http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TSP.2010.2052046[Abstract] We consider the robust precoder design for multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems where the channel state information (CSI) is fed back from the single antenna receivers to the centralized transmitter equipped with multiple antennas. We propose to compress the feedback data by projecting the channel estimates onto a vector basis, known at the receivers and the transmitter, and quantizing the resulting coefficients. The channel estimator and the basis for the rank reduction are jointly optimized by minimizing the mean-square error (MSE) between the true and the rank-reduced CSI. Expressions for the conditional mean and the conditional covariance of the channel are derived which are necessary for the robust precoder design. These expressions take into account the following sources of error: channel estimation, truncation for rank reduction, quantization, and feedback channel delay. As an example for the robust problem formulation, vector precoding (VP) is designed based on the expectation of the MSE conditioned on the fed-back CSI. Our results show that robust precoding based on fed-back CSI clearly outperforms conventional precoding designs which do not take into account the errors in the CSI.Galicia, ConsellerĂa de InnovaciĂłn, Industria e Comercio; PGIDT06TIC10501PRMinisterio de Educacion y Ciencia; TEC2007-68020-C04-01Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia; CSD2008-00010.Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia; HA2006-0112Alemania. Hybrid TH-VP Precoding for Multi-User MIMO

Vector perturbation (VP) is a nonlinear precoding technique that achieves near-capacity performance in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems at the expense of large complexity due to the search for the optimum perturbation vector. In this paper, we present the hybrid Tomlinson–Harashima VP (TH-VP) algorithm, a novel zero-forcing pre coding scheme, which combines TH precoding to remove interuser interference, and VP precoding to equalize each user’s multiple spatial streams. We show that the two nonlinear techniques can be integrated in a single optimization and that the proposed algorithm has lower computational requirements than any other. The performance of TH-VP is analyzed and simulation results show that TH-VP outperforms conventional zero-forcing VP and approaches the performance of dirty paper coding

Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding Based Transceiver Design for MIMO Relay Systems With Channel Covariance Information

In this paper, we investigate the performance of the Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoder based nonlinear transceiver design for a nonregenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system assuming that the full channel state information (CSI) of the source-relay link is known, while only the channel covariance information (CCI) of the relay-destination link is available at the relay node. We first derive the structure of the optimal TH precoding matrix and the source precoding matrix that minimize the mean-squared error (MSE) of the signal waveform estimation at the destination. Then we develop an iterative algorithm to optimize the relay precoding matrix. To reduce the computational complexity of the iterative algorithm, we propose a simplified precoding matrices design scheme. Numerical results show that the proposed precoding matrices design schemes have a better bit-error-rate performance than existing algorithms
