    Sensitivity of asymmetric rate-dependent critical systems to initial conditions: insights into cellular decision making

    The work reported here aims to address the effects of time-dependent parameters and stochasticity on decision-making in biological systems. We achieve this by extending previous studies that resorted to simple normal forms. Yet, we focus primarily on the issue of the system's sensitivity to initial conditions in the presence of different noise distributions. In addition, we assess the impact of two-way sweeping through the critical region of a canonical Pitchfork bifurcation with a constant external asymmetry. The parallel with decision-making in bio-circuits is performed on this simple system since it is equivalent in its available states and dynamics to more complex genetic circuits. Overall, we verify that rate-dependent effects are specific to particular initial conditions. Information processing for each starting state is affected by the balance between sweeping speed through critical regions, and the type of fluctuations added. For a heavy-tail noise, forward-reverse dynamic bifurcations are more efficient in processing the information contained in external signals, when compared to the system relying on escape dynamics, if it starts at an attractor not favoured by the asymmetry and, in conjunction, if the sweeping amplitude is large

    From cellular decision making to adaptive handoff in heterogeneous wireless networks

    Handoff decision making is critical for mobile users to reap potential benefits from heterogeneous wireless networks. This letter proposes a biologically inspired handoff decisionmaking method by mimicking the dynamics which govern the adaptive behavior of an Escherichia coli cell in a time-varying environment.With the goal of guaranteeing the Quality of Service (QoS), we formulate a utility function that covers the demands of a user’s diverse applications and the time-varying network conditions. With this utility function, we map the dynamic heterogeneous environment to a cellular decision-making space, such that the user is induced by a cellular attractor selection mechanism to make distributed and robust handoff decisions. Furthermore, we also present a multi-attribute decision-making network selection algorithm for any user to determine an access network, which is integrated with the proposed bio-inspired decision-making mechanism. Simulation results are supplemented to show that the proposed method can achieve better QoS and fairness when it is compared with conventional methods

    Towards a situation-awareness-driven design of operational business intelligence & analytics systems

    With the swamping and timeliness of data in the organizational con-text, the decision maker’s choice of an appropriate decision alternative in a given situation is defied. In particular, operational actors are facing the challenge to meet business-critical decisions in a short time and at high frequency. The con-struct of Situation Awareness (SA) has been established in cognitive psychology as a valid basis for understanding the behavior and decision making of human beings in complex and dynamic systems. SA gives decision makers the possibil-ity to make informed, time-critical decisions and thereby improve the perfor-mance of the respective business process. This research paper leverages SA as starting point for a design science project for Operational Business Intelligence and Analytics systems and suggests a first version of design principles

    Threat assessment, sense making, and critical decision-making in police, military, ambulance, and fire services

    Military and emergency response remain inherently dangerous occupations that require the ability to accurately assess threats and make critical decisions under significant time pressures. The cognitive processes associated with these abilities are complex and have been the subject of several significant, albeit service specific studies. Here, we present an attempt at finding the commonalities in threat assessment, sense making, and critical decision-making for emergency response across police, military, ambulance, and fire services. Relevant research is identified and critically appraised through a systematic literature review of English-language studies published from January 2000 through July 2020 on threat assessment and critical decision-making theory in dynamic emergency service and military environments. A total of 10,084 titles and abstracts were reviewed, with 94 identified as suitable for inclusion in the study. We then present our findings focused on six lines of enquiry: Bibliometrics, Language, Situation Awareness, Critical Decision Making, Actions, and Evaluation. We then thematically analyse these findings to reveal the commonalities between the four services. Despite existing single or dual service studies in the field, this research is significant in that it is the first examine decision making and threat assessment theory across all four contexts of military, police, fire and ambulance services, but it is also the first to assess the state of knowledge and explore the extent that commonality exists and models or practices can be applied across each discipline. The results demonstrate all military and emergency services personnel apply both intuitive and formal decision-making processes, depending on multiple situational and individual factors. Institutional restriction of decision-making to a single process at the expense of the consideration of others, or the inappropriate training and application of otherwise appropriate decision-making processes in certain circumstances is likely to increase the potential for adverse outcomes, or at the very least restrict peak performance being achieved. The applications of the findings of the study not only extend to facilitating improved practice in each of the individual services examined, but provide a basis to assist future research, and contribute to the literature exploring threat assessment and decision making in dynamic contexts

    How Digital Strategy and Management Games Can Facilitate the Practice of Dynamic Decision-Making

    This paper examines how digital strategy and management games that have been initially designed for entertainment can facilitate the practice of dynamic decision-making. Based on a comparative qualitative analysis of 17 games—organized into categories derived from a conceptual model of decision-making design—this article illustrates two ways in which these games may be useful in supporting the learning of dynamic decision-making in educational practice: (1) Players must take over the role of a decider and solve situations in which players must pursue different conflicting goals by making a continuous series of decisions on a variety of actions and measures; (2) three of the features of the games are considered to structure players’ practice of decision-making and foster processes of learning through the curation of possible decisions, the offering of lucid feedback and the modification of time. This article also highlights the games’ shortcomings, from an educational perspective, as players’ decisions are restricted by the numbers of choices they can make within the game, and certain choices are rewarded more than others. An educational application of the games must, therefore, entail a critical reflection of players’ limited choices inside a necessarily biased system
