    Multi-UAV network control through dynamic task allocation: Ensuring data-rate and bit-error-rate support

    A multi-UAV system relies on communications to operate. Failure to communicate remotely sensed mission data to the base may render the system ineffective, and the inability to exchange command and control messages can lead to system failures. This paper describes a unique method to control communications through distributed task allocation to engage under-utilized UAVs to serve as communication relays and to ensure that the network supports mission tasks. The distributed algorithm uses task assignment information, including task location and proposed execution time, to predict the network topology and plan support using relays. By explicitly coupling task assignment and relay creation processes the team is able to optimize the use of agents to address the needs of dynamic complex missions. The framework is designed to consider realistic network communication dynamics including path loss, stochastic fading, and information routing. The planning strategy is shown to ensure that agents support both datarate and interconnectivity bit-error-rate requirements during task execution.     Pose consensus based on dual quaternion algebra with application to decentralized formation control of mobile manipulators

    This paper presents a solution based on dual quaternion algebra to the general problem of pose (i.e., position and orientation) consensus for systems composed of multiple rigid-bodies. The dual quaternion algebra is used to model the agents' poses and also in the distributed control laws, making the proposed technique easily applicable to time-varying formation control of general robotic systems. The proposed pose consensus protocol has guaranteed convergence when the interaction among the agents is represented by directed graphs with directed spanning trees, which is a more general result when compared to the literature on formation control. In order to illustrate the proposed pose consensus protocol and its extension to the problem of formation control, we present a numerical simulation with a large number of free-flying agents and also an application of cooperative manipulation by using real mobile manipulators

    Swarm robotics: Cooperative navigation in unknown environments

    Swarm Robotics is garnering attention in the robotics field due to its substantial benefits. It has been proven to outperform most other robotic approaches in many applications such as military, space exploration and disaster search and rescue missions. It is inspired by the behavior of swarms of social insects such as ants and bees. It consists of a number of robots with limited capabilities and restricted local sensing. When deployed, individual robots behave according to local sensing until the emergence of a global behavior where they, as a swarm, can accomplish missions individuals cannot. In this research, we propose a novel exploration and navigation method based on a combination of Probabilistic Finite Sate Machine (PFSM), Robotic Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (RDPSO) and Depth First Search (DFS). We use V-REP Simulator to test our approach. We are also implementing our own cost effective swarm robot platform, AntBOT, as a proof of concept for future experimentation. We prove that our proposed method will yield excellent navigation solution in optimal time when compared to methods using either PFSM only or RDPSO only. In fact, our method is proved to produce 40% more success rate along with an exploration speed of 1.4x other methods. After exploration, robots can navigate the environment forming a Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) and using the graph of robots as network nodes

    Dynamic mission planning for communication control in multiple unmanned aircraft teams

In addition, a method is provided for UAVs to estimate the network performance during times of uncertainty, adjust their plans to acceptable levels of risk, and adapt the planning behavior to changes in the communication environment. The system performance is verified through multiple experiments conducted in simulation. Finally, the work developed is implemented in outdoor flight testing with a team of up to four UAVs to demonstrate real-time capability and robustness to imperfections in the environment.     Mutual information-based gradient-ascent control for distributed robotics

We begin with the fundamental problem of deploying a single ground robot equipped with a range sensor and tasked to build an occupancy grid map. The desired explorative behaviors of the robot for occupancy grid mapping highlight the correlation between the information content and the spatial realization of the robot's range measurements. We prove that any occupancy grid controller tasked to maximize a mutual information reward function is eventually attracted to unexplored space, i.e., areas of highest uncertainty. We show that mutual information encodes geometric relationships that are fundamental to robot control and yields geometrically relevant reward surfaces on which robots can navigate. Taking inspiration from geometric-based approaches to distributed robot coordination, we show that many multi-robot inference tasks can be cast in terms of an optimization problem. This optimization problem defines the task of minimizing the conditional entropy associated with the robots' inferred beliefs of the environment, which is equivalent to maximizing the mutual information between the environment state and the robots' next joint observation. Given simple robot dynamics and few probabilistic assumptions, none of which involve Gaussianity, we derive a gradientascent solution approach to these optimization problems that is convergent between sensor observations and locally optimal. More formally, we invoke LaSalle's Invariance Principle to prove that, given enough time between consecutive joint observations, robots following the gradient of mutual information will converge to goal positions that locally maximize the expected information gain resulting from the next observation. We show that the algorithmic implementation of the generalized gradient-ascent controller is not readily distributed among multiple robots, and thus sample-based methods are introduced to distributively approximate the likelihoods of the robots' joint observations. Not only are the involved non-parametric representations compatible with any type of Bayesian filter, but the computational complexities of the resulting decentralized controllers are independent with respect to the number of robots. Concerning the distributed approximations, we give two example consensus-based algorithms that run on an undirected network graph. The first consensus-based algorithm approximates discrete measurement probabilities, while the second approximates continuous likelihood distributions. We show that these anytime approximations provably converge to the correct values on a static and connected network graph without knowledge of the number of robots in the network or the corresponding graph's topology. Lastly, we incorporate the resulting consensus-based algorithms into both a hardware system and a simulation environment to allow for decentralized controller evaluation under non-ideal network settings. For the hardware experiments, the task is to infer the state of a bounded, planar environment by deploying five quadrotor flying robots with simulated sensors in both indoor and outdoor settings. For the numerical simulations, Monte Carlo-based analyses are performed for 100 robots, where each robot is simulated on an independent computer node within a computer cluster system. Simulations are also performed for 1000 robots using a single workstation computer equipped with a multicore GPU-enabled graphics card.     A control architecture and human interface for agile, reconfigurable micro aerial vehicle formations

    This thesis considers the problem of controlling a group of micro aerial vehicles for agile maneuvering cooperatively, or distributively. We first introduce the background and motivation for micro aerial vehicles, especially for the popular multi-rotor aerial vehicle platform. Then, we discuss the dynamics of quadrotor helicopters. A quadrotor is a specific kind of multi-rotor aerial vehicle with a special property called differential flatness, which simplifies the algorithm of trajectory planning, such that, instead of planning a trajectory in a 12-dimensional state space and 4-dimensional input space, we only need to plan the trajectory in 4-dimensional, so called, flat output space, while the 12-dimensional state and 4-dimensional input can be recovered from a mapping called endogenous transformation. We propose a series of approaches to achieve agile maneuvering of a dynamic quadrotor formation, from controlling a single quadrotor in an artificial vector field, to controlling a group of quadrotors in a Virtual Rigid Body (VRB) framework, to balancing the effect between the human control and autonomy for collision avoidance, and to fast on-line distributed collision avoidance with Buffered Voronoi Cells (BVC). In the vector field method, we generate velocity, acceleration, jerk and snap fields, depending on the tasks, or the positions of obstacles, such that a single quadrotor can easily find its required state and input from the endogenous transformation in order to track the artificial vector field. Next, with a Virtual Rigid Body framework, we let a group of quadrotors follow a single control command while also keeping a required formation, or even reconfigure from one formation to another. The Virtual Rigid Body framework decouples the trajectory planning problem into two sub-problems. Then we consider the problem of collision avoidance of the quadrotor formation when it is meanwhile tele-operated by a single human operator. The autonomy with collision avoidance algorithm, based on the vector field methods for a single quadrotor, is an assistive portion of the quadrotor formation controller, such that the human operator can focus on his/her high-level tasks, leaving the low-level collision avoidance task be handled automatically. We also consider the full autonomy problem of quadrotor formations when reconfiguring from one formation to another by developing a fast, on-line distributed collision avoidance algorithm using Buffered Voronoi Cells (BVCs). Our BVC based collision avoidance algorithm only requires sensed relative position, rather than relative position and velocity, while the computational complexity is comparable to other methods like velocity obstacles. At last, we introduce our experimental quadrotor platform which is built from PixHawk flight controller and Odroid-XU4 single-board computer. The hardware and software architecture of this multiple-quadrotor platform is described in detail so that our platform can easily be adopted and extended with different purposes.     Communication Efficiency in Information Gathering through Dynamic Information Flow

    This thesis addresses the problem of how to improve the performance of multi-robot information gathering tasks by actively controlling the rate of communication between robots. Examples of such tasks include cooperative tracking and cooperative environmental monitoring. Communication is essential in such systems for both decentralised data fusion and decision making, but wireless networks impose capacity constraints that are frequently overlooked. While existing research has focussed on improving available communication throughput, the aim in this thesis is to develop algorithms that make more efficient use of the available communication capacity. Since information may be shared at various levels of abstraction, another challenge is the decision of where information should be processed based on limits of the computational resources available. Therefore, the flow of information needs to be controlled based on the trade-off between communication limits, computation limits and information value. In this thesis, we approach the trade-off by introducing the dynamic information flow (DIF) problem. We suggest variants of DIF that either consider data fusion communication independently or both data fusion and decision making communication simultaneously. For the data fusion case, we propose efficient decentralised solutions that dynamically adjust the flow of information. For the decision making case, we present an algorithm for communication efficiency based on local LQ approximations of information gathering problems. The algorithm is then integrated with our solution for the data fusion case to produce a complete communication efficiency solution for information gathering. We analyse our suggested algorithms and present important performance guarantees. The algorithms are validated in a custom-designed decentralised simulation framework and through field-robotic experimental demonstrations

    Control of agent swarms in random environments

    The collective dynamic behavior of large groups of interacting autonomous agents (swarms) have inspired much research in both fundamental and engineering sciences. It is now widely acknowledged that the intrinsic nonlinearities due to mutual interactions can generate highly collective spatio-temporal patterns. Moreover, the resulting self-organized behavior cannot be simply guessed by solely investigating the elementary dynamic rules of single individuals. With a view to apply swarm collective behaviors to engineering, it is mandatory to thoroughly understand and master the mechanism of emergence to ultimately address the basic question: What individual dynamics and what type of interactions generate a given stable collective spatio-temporal behavior ? The present doctoral work is a contribution to the general common effort devoted to give an engineering operational answer to this simple and yet still highly challenging question. Swarms modeling is based on the dynamic properties of multi-agents systems (MAS). Methodological approaches for studying MAS are i) mathematics, ii) numerical simulation and iii) experimental validation on physical systems. While in this work we strive to construct and analytically solve new classes of mathematical MAS models, we also make a very special effort to develop new MAS modeling platforms for which one is simultaneously able to offer exact analytical results, corroborate these via simulation and finally implement the resulting control mechanism on swarms of actual robots. In full generality, MAS are formed by mutually interacting autonomous agents evolving in random environments. The presence of noise sources will indeed be unavoidable in any actual implementation. This drives us to consider coupled sets of stochastic nonlinear differential equations as being the natural mathematical modeling framework. We first focus on the simplest situations involving homogeneous swarms. Here, for large homogeneous swarms, the mean-field approach (borrowed from statistical physics) can be used to analytically characterize the resulting spatio-temporal patterns from the individual agent dynamics. In this context, we propose a new modeling platform (the so-called mixed-canonical dynamics) for which we are able to fully bridge the gap between pure mathematics and actual robotic implementation. In a second approach, we then consider heterogeneous swarms realized either when one agent behaves either as a leader or a shill (i.e as an infiltrated agent), or when two different sub-swarms compose the whole MAS. Analytical results are generally very hard to find for heterogeneous swarms, since the mean-field approach cannot be used. In this context, we use recent results in rank-based Brownian motions to approach some heterogeneous MAS models. In particular, we are able to analytically study i) a case of soft control of the swarm by a shill agent, and ii) the mutual interactions between two different societies (i.e., sub-groups) of homogeneous agents. Finally, the same mathematical framework enables us to consider a class of MAS where agents mutually interact via their environment (stigmergic interactions). Here, we can once again simultaneously present analytical results, numerical simulations and to ultimately implement the controller on a swarm of robotic boats

    An Experimental Study of Time Scales and Stability in Networked Multi-Robot Systems

A linear state space model is proposed for analyzing the coupled interaction of the information flow over the network with the dynamics of the robots. It is shown both analytically and experimentally that control gain, network update rate, and communication and control graph topologies are all critical factors determining the stability of the group of robots. Experiments with a group of flying quadrotor robots demonstrate the effect of different control gains for two different control graph topologies
