Fission: Secure Dynamic Code-Splitting for JavaScript
Traditional web programming involves the creation of two distinct programs: a client-side front-end, a server-side back-end, and a lot of communications boilerplate. An alternative approach is to use a tierless programming model, where a single program describes the behavior of both the client and the server, and the runtime system takes care of communication. Unfortunately, this usually entails adopting a new language and thus abandoning well-worn libraries and web programming tools.
In this paper, we present our ongoing work on Fission, a platform that uses dynamic tier-splitting and dynamic information flow control to transparently run a single JavaScript program across the client and server. Although static tier-splitting has been studied before, our focus on dynamic approaches presents several new challenges and opportunities. For example, Fission supports characteristic JavaScript features such as eval and sophisticated JavaScript libraries like React. Therefore, programmers can reason about the integrity and confidentiality of information while continuing to use common libraries and programming patterns. Moreover, by unifying the client and server into a single program, Fission allows language-based tools, like type systems and IDEs, to manipulate complete web applications. A Fast Compiler for NetKAT
High-level programming languages play a key role in a growing number of
networking platforms, streamlining application development and enabling precise
formal reasoning about network behavior. Unfortunately, current compilers only
handle "local" programs that specify behavior in terms of hop-by-hop forwarding
behavior, or modest extensions such as simple paths. To encode richer "global"
behaviors, programmers must add extra state -- something that is tricky to get
right and makes programs harder to write and maintain. Making matters worse,
existing compilers can take tens of minutes to generate the forwarding state
for the network, even on relatively small inputs. This forces programmers to
waste time working around performance issues or even revert to using
hardware-level APIs.
This paper presents a new compiler for the NetKAT language that handles rich
features including regular paths and virtual networks, and yet is several
orders of magnitude faster than previous compilers. The compiler uses symbolic
automata to calculate the extra state needed to implement "global" programs,
and an intermediate representation based on binary decision diagrams to
dramatically improve performance. We describe the design and implementation of
three essential compiler stages: from virtual programs (which specify behavior
in terms of virtual topologies) to global programs (which specify network-wide
behavior in terms of physical topologies), from global programs to local
programs (which specify behavior in terms of single-switch behavior), and from
local programs to hardware-level forwarding tables. We present results from
experiments on real-world benchmarks that quantify performance in terms of
compilation time and forwarding table size
Simplification of Internet Ossification through Software Defined Network Approach
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has received great responses from software industry in recent years. SDN has introduced number of technical symposium and technical discussions on computer network paradigm and topological design, along with research and scientific contributions. Fellow researchers, system administrators and engineers working on computer network, and hardware service providers are trying to establish new standards and provide guidelines for proper accomplishment and exploitation of such fresh approach. Now a day�s efforts have been made in the southbound of the SDN architecture, while the northbound interface still needs improvements. Focusing in the SDN northbound, this paper is concentrating on relative study of the body of acquaintance and discusses the challenges for developing SDN software.SDN also inspect and focused on the existing solutions and to search out trends and challenge on programming for SDN environments. In this paper the vision developments on techniques, provision, and methodologies for programmable networks, with the correct view in respect or aspect from the field of emerging software engineering is discussed.
Event-Driven Network Programming
Software-defined networking (SDN) programs must simultaneously describe
static forwarding behavior and dynamic updates in response to events.
Event-driven updates are critical to get right, but difficult to implement
correctly due to the high degree of concurrency in networks. Existing SDN
platforms offer weak guarantees that can break application invariants, leading
to problems such as dropped packets, degraded performance, security violations,
etc. This paper introduces EVENT-DRIVEN CONSISTENT UPDATES that are guaranteed
to preserve well-defined behaviors when transitioning between configurations in
response to events. We propose NETWORK EVENT STRUCTURES (NESs) to model
constraints on updates, such as which events can be enabled simultaneously and
causal dependencies between events. We define an extension of the NetKAT
language with mutable state, give semantics to stateful programs using NESs,
and discuss provably-correct strategies for implementing NESs in SDNs. Finally,
we evaluate our approach empirically, demonstrating that it gives well-defined
consistency guarantees while avoiding expensive synchronization and packet
buffering
Merlin: A Language for Provisioning Network Resources
This paper presents Merlin, a new framework for managing resources in
software-defined networks. With Merlin, administrators express high-level
policies using programs in a declarative language. The language includes
logical predicates to identify sets of packets, regular expressions to encode
forwarding paths, and arithmetic formulas to specify bandwidth constraints. The
Merlin compiler uses a combination of advanced techniques to translate these
policies into code that can be executed on network elements including a
constraint solver that allocates bandwidth using parameterizable heuristics. To
facilitate dynamic adaptation, Merlin provides mechanisms for delegating
control of sub-policies and for verifying that modifications made to
sub-policies do not violate global constraints. Experiments demonstrate the
expressiveness and scalability of Merlin on real-world topologies and
applications. Overall, Merlin simplifies network administration by providing
high-level abstractions for specifying network policies and scalable
infrastructure for enforcing them
Intelligent Management and Efficient Operation of Big Data
This chapter details how Big Data can be used and implemented in networking
and computing infrastructures. Specifically, it addresses three main aspects:
the timely extraction of relevant knowledge from heterogeneous, and very often
unstructured large data sources, the enhancement on the performance of
processing and networking (cloud) infrastructures that are the most important
foundational pillars of Big Data applications or services, and novel ways to
efficiently manage network infrastructures with high-level composed policies
for supporting the transmission of large amounts of data with distinct
requisites (video vs. non-video). A case study involving an intelligent
management solution to route data traffic with diverse requirements in a wide
area Internet Exchange Point is presented, discussed in the context of Big

Multitier Modules
Multitier programming languages address the complexity of developing distributed systems abstracting over low level implementation details such as data representation, serialization and network protocols. Since the functionalities of different peers can be defined in the same compilation unit, multitier languages do not force developers to modularize software along network boundaries. Unfortunately, combining the code for all tiers into the same compilation unit poses a scalability challenge or forces developers to resort to traditional modularization abstractions that are agnostic to the multitier nature of the language.
In this paper, we address this issue with a module system for multitier languages. Our module system supports encapsulating each (cross-peer) functionality and defining it over abstract peer types. As a result, we disentangle modularization and distribution and we enable the definition of a distributed system as a composition of multitier modules, each representing a subsystem. Our case studies on distributed algorithms, distributed data structures, as well as on the Apache Flink task distribution system, show that multitier modules allow the definition of reusable (abstract) patterns of interaction in distributed software and enable separating the modularization and distribution concerns, properly separating functionalities in distributed systems
