    Sequential Single-Cluster Auctions for Multi-Robot Task Allocation

    This thesis studies task allocation in multi-robot teams operating in dynamic environments. The multi-robot task allocation problem is a complex NP-Complete optimisation problem with globally optimal solutions often difficult to find. Because of this, the rapid generation of near optimal solutions to the problem that minimise task execution time and/or energy used by robots is highly desired. Our approach seeks to cluster together closely related tasks and then builds on existing distributed market-based auction architectures for distributing these sets of tasks among several autonomous robots. Dynamic environments introduce many challenges that are not found in closed systems. For instance, it is common for additional tasks to be inserted into a system after an initial solution to the task allocation problem is determined. Additionally, it is highly likely in long-term autonomous systems that individual robots may suffer some form of failure. The ability to alter plans to react to these types of challenges in a dynamic environment is required for the completion of all tasks. In our approach we allow the repeated formation and auctioning of task clusters with varying tasks. This allows us to react to and change the task allocation among robots during execution. Throughout this thesis we use empirical evaluation to study different approaches for forming clusters of tasks and the application of task clustering to distributed auctions for multi-robot task allocation problems. Our results show that allocating clusters of tasks to robots in solving these types of problems is a fast and effective method and produces near optimal solutions

    Task Allocation and Collaborative Localisation in Multi-Robot Systems

    To utilise multiple robots, it is fundamental to know what they should do, called task allocation, and to know where the robots are, called localisation. The order that tasks are completed in is often important, and makes task allocation difficult to solve (40 tasks have 1047 different ways of completing them). Algorithms in literature range from fast methods that provide reasonable allocations, to slower methods that can provide optimal allocations. These algorithms work well for systems with identical robots, but do not utilise robot differences for superior allocations when robots are non-identical. They also can not be applied to robots that can use different tools, where they must consider which tools to use for each task. Robot localisation is performed using sensors which are often assumed to always be available. This is not the case in GPS-denied environments such as tunnels, or on long-range missions where replacement sensors are not readily available. A promising method to overcome this is collaborative localisation, where robots observe one another to improve their location estimates. There has been little research on what robot properties make collaborative localisation most effective, or how to tune systems to make it as accurate as possible. Most task allocation algorithms do not consider localisation as part of the allocation process. If task allocation algorithms limited inter-robot distance, collaborative localisation can be performed during task completion. Such an algorithm could equally be used to ensure robots are within communication distance, and to quickly detect when a robot fails. While some algorithms for this exist in literature, they provide a weak guarantee of inter-robot distance, which is undesirable when applied to real robots. The aim of this thesis is to improve upon task allocation algorithms by increasing task allocation speed and efficiency, and supporting robot tool changes. Collaborative localisation parameters are analysed, and a task allocation algorithm that enables collaborative localisation on real robots is developed. This thesis includes a compendium of journal articles written by the author. The four articles forming the main body of the thesis discuss the multi-robot task allocation and localisation research during the author’s candidature.     Platooning-based control techniques in transportation and logistic

    This thesis explores the integration of autonomous vehicle technology with smart manufacturing systems. At first, essential control methods for autonomous vehicles, including Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs), Linear Quadratic Regulation (LQR)/Linear Quadratic Tracking (LQT), PID controllers, and dynamic control logic via flowcharts, are examined. These techniques are adapted for platooning to enhance coordination, safety, and efficiency within vehicle fleets, and various scenarios are analyzed to confirm their effectiveness in achieving predetermined performance goals such as inter-vehicle distance and fuel consumption. A first approach on simplified hardware, yet realistic to model the vehicle's behavior, is treated to further prove the theoretical results. Subsequently, performance improvement in smart manufacturing systems (SMS) is treated. The focus is placed on offline and online scheduling techniques exploiting Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to model the shop floor and Model Predictive Control (MPC) to adapt scheduling to unforeseen events, in order to understand how optimization algorithms and decision-making frameworks can transform resource allocation and production processes, ultimately improving manufacturing efficiency. In the final part of the work, platooning techniques are employed within SMS. Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are reimagined as autonomous vehicles, grouping them within platoon formations according to different criteria, and controlled to avoid collisions while carrying out production orders. This strategic integration applies platooning principles to transform AGV logistics within the SMS. The impact of AGV platooning on key performance metrics, such as makespan, is devised, providing insights into optimizing manufacturing processes. Throughout this work, various research fields are examined, with intersecting future technologies from precise control in autonomous vehicles to the coordination of manufacturing resources. This thesis provides a comprehensive view of how optimization and automation can reshape efficiency and productivity not only in the domain of autonomous vehicles but also in manufacturing

    An Adversarial Approach to Private Flocking in Mobile Robot Teams

    Privacy is an important facet of defence against adversaries. In this letter, we introduce the problem of private flocking . We consider a team of mobile robots flocking in the presence of an adversary, who is able to observe all robots’ trajectories, and who is interested in identifying the leader. We present a method that generates private flocking controllers that hide the identity of the leader robot. Our approach towards privacy leverages a data-driven adversarial co-optimization scheme. We design a mechanism that optimizes flocking control parameters, such that leader inference is hindered. As the flocking performance improves, we successively train an adversarial discriminator that tries to infer the identity of the leader robot. To evaluate the performance of our co-optimization scheme, we investigate different classes of reference trajectories. Although it is reasonable to assume that there is an inherent trade-off between flocking performance and privacy, our results demonstrate that we are able to achieve high flocking performance and simultaneously reduce the risk of revealing the leader

    Air Vehicle Path Planning

    This dissertation explores optimal path planning for air vehicles. An air vehicle exposed to illumination by a tracking radar is considered and the problem of determining an optimal planar trajectory connecting two prespecified points is addressed. An analytic solution yielding the trajectory minimizing the received radar energy reflected from the target is derived using the Calculus of Variations. Additionally, the related problem of an air vehicle tracked by a passive sensor is also solved. Using the insights gained from the single air vehicle radar exposure minimization problem, a hierarchical cooperative control law is formulated to determine the optimal trajectories that minimize the cumulative exposure of multiple air vehicles during a rendezvous maneuver. The problem of one air vehicle minimizing exposure to multiple radars is also addressed using a variational approach, as well as a sub-optimal minimax argument. Local and global optimality issues are explored. A novel decision criterion is developed determining the geometric conditions dictating when it is preferable to go between or around two radars. Lastly, an optimal minimum time control law is obtained for the search and target identification mission of an autonomous air vehicle. This work demonstrates that an awareness of the consequences of embracing sub-optimal and non-globally optimal solutions for optimization problems, such as air vehicle path planning, is essential

    Fault-tolerant control policies for multi-robot systems

    Throughout the past decade, we have witnessed an active interest in distributed motion coordination algorithms for networked mobile autonomous robots. Often, in multi-robot systems, each robot executing a coordination task is a little cost, a disposable autonomous agent that has ad-hoc sensing or communication capability, and limited mobility. Coordination tasks that a group of multiple mobile robots might perform include formation control, rendezvous, distributed estimation, deployment, flocking, etc. Also, there are challenging tasks that are more suitable for a group of mobile robots than an individual robot, such as surveillance, exploration, or hazardous environmental monitoring. The field has been collectively investigated by many researchers in robotics, control, artificial intelligence, and distributed computing. However, relatively little work has been done on developing algorithms to provide resilience to failures that can occur. The problem is extremely difficult to handle in that any partial failure of a robot is not readily detectable. Some failures in robot resources can have an adverse effect on not only the performance of the robot itself, but also other robots, and the collective task performance as well. This study presents the development of fault-tolerant distributed control policies for multi-robot systems. We consider two problems: rendezvous and coverage. For the former, the goal is to bring all robots to a common location, while for the latter the goal is to deploy robots to achieve optimal coverage of an environment. We consider the case in which each robot is an autonomous decision maker that is anonymous (i.e., robots are indistinguishable to one another), memoryless (i.e., each robot makes decisions based upon only its current information), and dimensionless (i.e., collision checking is not considered). Each robot has a limited sensing range and can directly estimate the state of only those robots within that sensing range, which induces a network topology for the multi-robot system. We assume that it is not possible for the fault-free robots to identify the faulty robots (e.g., due to the anonymous property of the robots). For each problem, we provide an efficient computational framework and analysis of algorithms, all of which converge in the face of faulty robots under a few assumptions on the network topology and sensing abilities. A suite of experiments and simulations confirm our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that our proposed algorithms are useful in fault-prone multi-robot systems
