    Dense Gas in the Milky Way

    We present a study of dense gas emission in the Milky Way in order to serve as a basis for comparison with extragalactic results. This study combines new observations of HCN, CS, and CO in individual GMCs and in the Milky Way plane with published studies of emission from these molecules in the inner 500 pc of the Milky Way. We find a strong trend in the fraction of emission from dense gas tracers as a function of location in the Milky Way: in the bulge, I_{HCN}/I_{CO} = 0.081 \pm 0.004, in the plane, I_{HCN}/I_{CO} = 0.026 \pm 0.008 on average, and over the full extent of nearby GMCs, I_{HCN}/I_{CO} = 0.014 \pm 0.020. Similar trends are seen in I_{CS}/I_{CO}. The low intensities of the HCN and CS emission in the plane suggests that these lines are produced by gas at moderate densities; they are thus not like the emission produced by the dense, pc-scale star forming cores in nearby GMCs. The contrast between the bulge and disk ratios in the Milky Way is likely to be caused by a combination of higher kinetic temperatures as well as a higher dense gas fraction in the bulge of the Milky Way.Comment: 34 pages LaTeX, AASTEX macros, includes 11 postscript figures.     Observing, Describing, and Identifying Clouds

    In this activity students observe and sketch clouds, describing their forms. They initially generate descriptions of a personal nature and then move toward building a more scientific vocabulary. They then correlate their descriptions with the standard classifications using the ten cloud types identified for GLOBE. Each student develops a personal cloud booklet to be used in conjunction with the GLOBE Cloud Chart. . The intended outcome is that students will be able to identify cloud types using standard cloud classification names.     GASKAP -- The Galactic ASKAP Survey

    A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (HI) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of HI emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b|< 10deg) at all declinations south of delta = +40deg, spanning longitudes 167deg through 360deg to 79deg at b=0deg, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13,020 square degrees. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically sigma_T ~ 1 K at resolution 30arcsec and 1 km/s. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream.Comment: 45 pages, 8 figures, Pub.     A Pilot Survey for the H2_2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS)

    We describe observations with the Mopra radiotelescope designed to assess the feasibility of the H2_2O maser southern Galactic plane survey (HOPS). We mapped two one-square-degree regions along the Galactic plane using the new 12 mm receiver and the UNSW Mopra spectrometer (MOPS). We covered the entire spectrum between 19.5 and 27.5 GHz using this setup with the main aims of finding out which spectral lines can be detected with a quick mapping survey. We report on detected emission from H2_2O masers, NH3_3 inversion transitions (1,1), (2,2) and (3,3), HC3_3N (3-2), as well as several radio recombination lines.Comment: accepted by PAS
