Tilings, Chern-Simons Theories and M2 Branes
A new infinite class of Chern-Simons theories is presented using brane
tilings. The new class reproduces all known cases so far and introduces many
new models that are dual to M2 brane theories which probe a toric non-compact
CY 4-fold. The master space of the quiver theory is used as a tool to construct
the moduli space for this class and the Hilbert Series is computed for a
selected set of examples.Comment: 23 pages, minor changes, references adde
Collapse Theories as Beable Theories
I discuss the interpretation of spontaneous collapse theories, with particular reference to Bell's suggestion that the stochastic jumps in the evolution of the wave function should be considered as local beables of the theory. I develop this analogy in some detail for the case of non-relativistic GRW-type theories, using a generalisation of Bell's notion of beables to POV measures. In the context of CSL-type theories, this strategy appears to fail, and I discuss instead Ghirardi and co-workers' mass-density interpretation and its relation to Schroedinger's original charge-density interpretation. This discussion is extended to relativistic CSL-type theories. A few remarks on Everett's interpretation conclude the paper
Theories of vagueness and theories of law
It is common to think that what theory of linguistic vagueness is correct has implications for debates in philosophy of law. I disagree. I argue that the implications of particular theories of vagueness on substantive issues of legal theory and practice are less far-reaching than often thought. I focus on four putative implications discussed in the literature concerning (i) the value of vagueness in the law, (ii) the possibility and value of legal indeterminacy, (iii) the possibility of the rule of law, and (iv) strong discretion. I conclude with some methodological remarks. Delineating questions about conventional meaning, the metaphysics/metasemantics of (legal) content determination, and norms of legal interpretation and judicial practice can motivate clearer answers and a more refined understanding of the space of overall theories of vagueness, interpretation, and law
Topological conformal field theories and gauge theories
This paper gives a construction, using heat kernels, of differential forms on
the moduli space of metrised ribbon graphs, or equivalently on the moduli space
of Riemann surfaces with boundary. The construction depends on a manifold with
a bundle of Frobenius algebras, satisfying various conditions. These forms
satisfy gluing conditions which mean they form an open topological conformal
field theory, i.e. a kind of open string theory.
If the integral of these forms converged, it would yield the purely quantum
part of the partition function of a Chern-Simons type gauge theory. Yang-Mills
theory on a four manifold arises as one of these Chern-Simons type gauge
theories.Comment: A few more typos correcte
Decomposable Theories
We present in this paper a general algorithm for solving first-order formulas
in particular theories called "decomposable theories". First of all, using
special quantifiers, we give a formal characterization of decomposable theories
and show some of their properties. Then, we present a general algorithm for
solving first-order formulas in any decomposable theory "T". The algorithm is
given in the form of five rewriting rules. It transforms a first-order formula
"P", which can possibly contain free variables, into a conjunction "Q" of
solved formulas easily transformable into a Boolean combination of
existentially quantified conjunctions of atomic formulas. In particular, if "P"
has no free variables then "Q" is either the formula "true" or "false". The
correctness of our algorithm proves the completeness of the decomposable
theories.
Finally, we show that the theory "Tr" of finite or infinite trees is a
decomposable theory and give some benchmarks realized by an implementation of
our algorithm, solving formulas on two-partner games in "Tr" with more than 160
nested alternated quantifiers
Top Theories
As the most recently discovered and heaviest quark, the top presents us with
theoretical challenges. How are we to understand its properties within the
larger effort to explain the origins of electroweak and flavor symmetry
breaking ? This talk discusses some of the surprises the top quark may have in
store for us and indicates how experiment may help us pinpoint the truth about
top.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, Talk presented at Heavy Flavours 8, University
