A schema-based P2P network to enable publish-subscribe for multimedia content in open hypermedia systems
Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS) aim to provide efficient dissemination, adaptation and integration of hyperlinked multimedia resources. Content available in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks could add significant value to OHS provided that challenges for efficient discovery and prompt delivery of rich and up-to-date content are successfully addressed. This paper proposes an architecture that enables the operation of OHS over a P2P overlay network of OHS servers based on semantic annotation of (a) peer OHS servers and of (b) multimedia resources that can be obtained through the link services of the OHS. The architecture provides efficient resource discovery. Semantic query-based subscriptions over this P2P network can enable access to up-to-date content, while caching at certain peers enables prompt delivery of multimedia content. Advanced query resolution techniques are employed to match different parts of subscription queries (subqueries). These subscriptions can be shared among different interested peers, thus increasing the efficiency of multimedia content dissemination
Distributed Reasoning in a Peer-to-Peer Setting: Application to the Semantic Web
In a peer-to-peer inference system, each peer can reason locally but can also
solicit some of its acquaintances, which are peers sharing part of its
vocabulary. In this paper, we consider peer-to-peer inference systems in which
the local theory of each peer is a set of propositional clauses defined upon a
local vocabulary. An important characteristic of peer-to-peer inference systems
is that the global theory (the union of all peer theories) is not known (as
opposed to partition-based reasoning systems). The main contribution of this
paper is to provide the first consequence finding algorithm in a peer-to-peer
setting: DeCA. It is anytime and computes consequences gradually from the
solicited peer to peers that are more and more distant. We exhibit a sufficient
condition on the acquaintance graph of the peer-to-peer inference system for
guaranteeing the completeness of this algorithm. Another important contribution
is to apply this general distributed reasoning setting to the setting of the
Semantic Web through the Somewhere semantic peer-to-peer data management
system. The last contribution of this paper is to provide an experimental
analysis of the scalability of the peer-to-peer infrastructure that we propose,
on large networks of 1000 peers
Reference Model and Architecture for the Post-Platform Economy
The primary goal of this thesis is to propose a reference model and an accompanying software system architecture, which together can serve as a guiding framework for the analysis, design, and implementation of distributed market spaces. The benefit of such a framework is considered two-fold: On the one hand, it provides insights essential for understanding various aspects and elements of self-organized and strictly decentralized online structures to facilitate the emergence of the post-platform economy. On the other hand, it serves as a blueprint for designing and implementing a distributed marketplace instance for a specific application context. It thus allows consumers and providers to set up and expand market spaces themselves, in which they can engage directly and reliably with complex product scenarios
Semantic Interoperability in Digital Library Systems
This report is a state-of-the-art overview of activities and research being undertaken in areas relating to semantic interoperability in digital library systems. It has been undertaken as part of the cluster activity of WP5: Knowledge Extraction and Semantic Interoperability (KESI). The authors and contributors draw on the research expertise and experience of a number of organisations (UKOLN, ICS-FORTH, NETLAB, TUC-MUSIC, University of Glamorgan) as well as several work-packages (WP5: Knowledge Extraction and Semantic Interoperability; WP3: Audio-Visual and Non-traditional Objects) within the DELOS2 NoE. In addition, a workshop was held [KESI Workshop Sept. 2004] (co-located with ECDL 2004) in order to provide a forum for the discussion of issues relevant to the topic of this report. We are grateful to those who participated in the forum and for their valuable comments, which have helped to shape this report. Definitions of interoperability, syntactic interoperability and semantic interoperability are presented noting that semantic interoperability is very much about matching concepts as a basis. The NSF Post Digital Libraries Futures Workshop: Wave of the Future [NSF Workshop] has identified semantic interoperability as being of primary importance in digital library research
LifeWatch deliverable 5.1.3: Technical construction plan –Reference Model
The LifeWatch Reference Model (LifeWatch-RM) provides a common conceptual framework for understanding the significant relations and key characteristics of the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) elements of LifeWatch that should appear consistently across different implementations. Its intention is to represent a common view of the ICT dimension between all those involved in and contributing to the LifeWatch Research Infrastructure and to provide guidelines for the construction and management process. The LifeWatch-RM defines a number of components and architectural concepts as a basis for the future LifeWatch Architecture. It is neither a blueprint nor does it define a technological mapping, but identifies some key aspects and components that should be present in the final implementation of the LifeWatch System
Geospatial Web Services, Open Standards, and Advances in Interoperability: A Selected, Annotated Bibliography
This paper is designed to help GIS librarians and information specialists follow developments in the emerging field of geospatial Web services (GWS). When built using open standards, GWS permits users to dynamically access, exchange, deliver, and process geospatial data and products on the World Wide Web, no matter what platform or protocol is used. Standards/specifications pertaining to geospatial ontologies, geospatial Web services and interoperability are discussed in this bibliography. Finally, a selected, annotated list of bibliographic references by experts in the field is presented
