IPAD 2: Advances in Distributed Data Base Management for CAD/CAM
The Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD) Project objective is to improve engineering productivity through better use of computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. The focus is on development of technology and associated software for integrated company-wide management of engineering information. The objectives of this conference are as follows: to provide a greater awareness of the critical need by U.S. industry for advancements in distributed CAD/CAM data management capability; to present industry experiences and current and planned research in distributed data base management; and to summarize IPAD data management contributions and their impact on U.S. industry and computer hardware and software vendors
Evaluation of automated decisionmaking methodologies and development of an integrated robotic system simulation. Appendix A: ROBSIM user's guide
The purpose of the Robotics Simulation Program is to provide a broad range of computer capabilities to assist in the design, verification, simulation, and study of robotics systems. ROBSIM is program in FORTRAN 77 for use on a VAX 11/750 computer under the VMS operating system. This user's guide describes the capabilities of the ROBSIM programs, including the system definition function, the analysis tools function and the postprocessor function. The options a user may encounter with each of these executables are explained in detail and the different program prompts appearing to the user are included. Some useful suggestions concerning the appropriate answers to be given by the user are provided. An example user interactive run in enclosed for each of the main program services, and some of the capabilities are illustrated
IC.IDO as a tool for displaying machining processes. The logic interface between Computer-Aided-Manufacturing and Virtual Reality
Abstract This scientific communication investigates the logic interface of a CAM solver, i.e., MasterCAM, into a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. This integration helps in displaying machining operations in virtual reality. Currently, to partially visualize the results of a simulation in an immersive environment, an import/export procedure must be done manually. Here, a software plugin integrated into IC.IDO (by ESI Group) has been realized and fully described. This application allows the complete integration of CAM solver into the VR environment. In particular, the VERICUT solver has been integrated into VR. This kind of integration has never been done yet

Considerations for a design and operations knowledge support system for Space Station Freedom
Engineering and operations of modern engineered systems depend critically upon detailed design and operations knowledge that is accurate and authoritative. A design and operations knowledge support system (DOKSS) is a modern computer-based information system providing knowledge about the creation, evolution, and growth of an engineered system. The purpose of a DOKSS is to provide convenient and effective access to this multifaceted information. The complexity of Space Station Freedom's (SSF's) systems, elements, interfaces, and organizations makes convenient access to design knowledge especially important, when compared to simpler systems. The life cycle length, being 30 or more years, adds a new dimension to space operations, maintenance, and evolution. Provided here is a review and discussion of design knowledge support systems to be delivered and operated as a critical part of the engineered system. A concept of a DOKSS for Space Station Freedom (SSF) is presented. This is followed by a detailed discussion of a DOKSS for the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and Work Package-2 portions of SSF

PCLIPS
CLIPS is an expert system, created specifically to allow rapid implementation of an expert system. CLIPS is written in C, and thus needs a very small amount of memory to run. Parallel CLIPS (PCLIPS) is an extension to CLIPS which is intended to be used in situations where a group of expert systems are expected to run simultaneously and occasionally communicate with each other on an integrated network. PCLIPS is a coarse-grained data distribution system. Its main goal is to take information in one knowledge base and distribute it to other knowledge bases so that all the executing expert systems are able to use that knowledge to solve their disparate problems
On flexibly integrating machine vision inspection systems in PCB manufacture
The objective of this research is to advance computer vision techniques
and their applications in the electronics manufacturing industry. The research has
been carried out with specific reference to the design of automatic optical inspection
(AOI) systems and their role in the manufacture of printed circuit boards (PCBs).
To achieve this objective, application areas of AOI systems in PCB manufacture
have been examined. As a result, a requirement for enhanced performance
characteristics has been identified and novel approaches and image processing algorithms
have been evolved which can be used within next generation of AOI systems.
The approaches are based on gaining an understanding of ways in which
manufacturing information can be used to support AOI operations. Through providing
information support, an AOI system has access to product models and associated
information which can be used to enhance the execution of visual inspection
tasks. Manufacturing systems integration, or more accurately controlled access to
electronic information, is the key to the approaches. Also in the thesis methods are
proposed to achieve the flexible integration of AOI systems (and computer vision
systems in general) within their host PCB manufacturing environment. Furthermore,
potential applications of information supported AOI systems at various stages of
PCB manufacturing have been studied.
It is envisaged that more efficient and cost-effective applications of AOI
can be attained through adopting the flexible integration methods proposed, since
AOI-generated information can now be accessed and utilized by other processes
