Stability of a 4 degree of freedom rotor on electrodynamic passive magnetic bearings

    Get PDF
Electrodynamic bearings exploit repulsive forces due to eddy currents to produce positive stiffness by passive means without violating the Earnshaw stability criterion. This remarkable characteristic makes this type of bearing a suitable alternative to active magnetic bearings in fields such as kinetic energy storage flywheels, turbo pumps, high speed compressors, among others. However, the suspension can become unstable due to rotating damping. To obtain deeper understanding of this instability phenomenon this paper presents the analysis of stability of a four degree of freedom (4dof) rotor supported by electrodynamic bearings. The 4dof rotor model is coupled to the dynamic model of the eddy current forces generated by the electrodynamic bearing and the stability of the complete system is analyzed. This model is used to study the stability of both cylindrical and conical whirling motion of the rotor. In addition to the well known cylindrical whirl instability the possible occurrence of conical instability is demonstrated. Finally the effects of two stabilization strategies are analyze

Single-layer economic model predictive control for periodic operation

    Get PDF
In this paper we consider periodic optimal operation of constrained periodic linear systems. We propose an economic model predictive controller based on a single layer that unites dynamic real time optimization and control. The proposed controller guarantees closed-loop convergence to the optimal periodic trajectory that minimizes the average operation cost for a given economic criterion. A priori calculation of the optimal trajectory is not required and if the economic cost function is changed, recursive feasibility and convergence to the new periodic optimal trajectory is guaranteed. The results are demonstrated with two simulation examples, a four tank system, and a simplified model of a section of Barcelona's water distribution network.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

The Indian Economy Since Liberalisation: the Structure and Composition of Exports and Industrial Transformation (1980 – 2000)

    Get PDF
This paper assesses empirically structural change in the Indian manufacturing based export sector, based on an analysis of 143 industries / product groupings (mainly manufacturing industries). Trade indices such as Balassa´s revealed comparative advantage (RCA) index, and other variants commonly employed in the literature are used in our analysis. Regression analysis on the RSCA indices is used to further analyse structural change. Thereafter, the stability of the RCA indices is examined, as well as the process of their intertemporal evolution. Three technology categories (high technology, medium technology and low technology) are examined individually and SITC product codes are used as proxies for export industries, in order to look at industry movements within each of these groups. This analysis enables us to assess the export performance of Indian industries in the selected product-industry groupings in detail and evaluate the prospects for growth of particular Indian industrial groupings

Comments on Frequency Swept Rotating Input Perturbation Techniques and Identification of the Fluid Force Models in Rotor/bearing/seal Systems and Fluid Handling Machines

    Get PDF
Perturbation techniques used for identification of rotating system dynamic characteristics are described. A comparison between two periodic frequency-swept perturbation methods applied in identification of fluid forces of rotating machines is presented. The description of the fluid force model identified by inputting circular periodic frequency-swept force is given. This model is based on the existence and strength of the circumferential flow, most often generated by the shaft rotation. The application of the fluid force model in rotor dynamic analysis is presented. It is shown that the rotor stability is an entire rotating system property. Some areas for further research are discussed
