    Impact of Electronic Course Materials on Short Loan Libraries

    The advent of Electronic Course Materials (ECM‟s) services in academic libraries has had a remarkable impact on academic libraries, since they provide new prospects for libraries, library staff and various new methods for accessing library services for its users. With the challenge for the librarians growing in multiple scope due to Information Communication Technologies (ICT) applications. This study will look at how and to what degree has the implementation of ECM‟s made an impact on staff‟s work in academic libraries. The purpose of this proposed research study is to explore how Electronic Course Materials (ECM‟s) have affected the work of librarians in academic short loan collection in New Zealand tertiary institutions. This study adopted a mixed-method approach and utilized both qualitative and quantitative research methods. An online survey was applied for this study where questionnaires were sent to the respondents via a URL. This study sought to find out whether ECM‟s have made any impact on staff‟s work. The resulted indicated that ECM‟s setting is in a state of transformation. This transformation has enabled the library staff to learn new technology to work with ECM‟s effectively and this has encouraged them to learn new skills in order to achieve the required results. There is very limited research in this area; this makes it beneficial to investigate this area. Research findings will prove beneficial to the librarians as they could look at the research findings and compare their services with the result. Academic libraries could use new technologies to improve their services, which may help them to support the teaching and learning process

    Publication Trends in Library Reserves: A Quantitative Content Analysis

    A quantitative content analysis of abstracts on the topic of library reserves in the databases Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA), Library Literature and Information Science Index (LLI), and Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) was conducted in order to identify subtopics and research trends over time. Seven of the most frequent library reserves subtopics were identified: electronic reserves, implementation, physical reserves, evaluation, E-Reserves software, copyright, and learning management systems. Results indicate that library reserve related topics appear slowly in the early literature and begin to drop off in frequency in 2008

The publication is organized according to the ISMS thematic Working Group structure which provides an overview of sub-disciplinary efforts of addressing issues of relevance within the field of Military Sciences. All abstracts contain institutional affiliation and contact information to the presenter. Therefore we believe that the #ISMS17 Book of Abstracts will be useful also as a tool for potential collaboration between the ISMS institutions with its research fellowship and among the wider ISMS community

The 62 Members profiled in this edition represent some of the longest standing ASSAf Members. One of the strengths of a national Academy is the disciplinary diversity of its Membership. Collectively, the narratives of the Members profiled in this edition represent the apex of academic excellence and scholarship. All these Members have used their formal academic training in their specific fields and demonstrated how, through engagement with scholars in other fields, both locally and internationally, contributed to them becoming champions and leaders in advancing knowledge. Every narrative in this edition provides a unique perspective on contributions by accomplished South African scientists and scholars who, using an evidence-based approach have contributed significantly in growing the global knowledge production in their respective fields. Many of these scholars have held senior positions at academic institutions, been part of national and international committees, served at Governmental positions, and worked unstintingly in shaping the agendas of the post-apartheid South Africa.     Beyond the ABCs: Higher Education and Developing Countries

    This paper analyzes a relatively neglected facet of the complex debate regarding human capital – higher (or tertiary) education. It addresses five broad questions examining higher education in developing countries. One, are the economic effects of higher education on developing countries different from those in industrialized countries, with its links with labor markets of lesser importance than its impact on institutional development? Two, how does the impact of higher education depend on the type of education and its beneficiaries? Three, with the state unable to meet growing demand pressures, what should be the proper role of the state to ensure not just quality but also equity and access? Four, how should countries rethink the provision of higher education in an “open economy” from seeking education abroad or encouraging foreign providers into the country or simply linking domestic institutions with foreign quality assurance mechanisms? And five, do new technologies offer developing countries a new paradigm to expand the provision of high quality but low cost higher education? The aim is not to provide categorical answers to these complex questions, but rather highlight the analytical and empirical lacuna with regard to each of these questions.higher education, human capital
