Virtuous Circles of Productivity: Star Bioscientists and the Institutional Transformation of Industry

    Get PDF
The most productive (`star') bioscientists possessed intellectual human capital of extraordinary scientific and pecuniary value for some 10-15 yrs after Cohen & Boyer's 1973 founding discovery for biotechnology. This extraordinary value was due to the union of still scarce knowledge of the new research techniques and genius to apply these techniques in valuable ways. As in other sciences, star bioscientists were particularly protective of their ideas in the early years of the revolution, tending to collaborate more within their own institution which slowed diffusion to other scientists. Therefore, close, bench-level working ties between stars and firm scientists were needed to accomplish commercialization of the breakthroughs. Where and when the star scientists were actively producing academic publications is a key determinant of where and when commercial firms began to use biotechnology. The extent of collaboration by a firm's scientists with stars is a powerful predictor of its success: for each 9 articles co-authored by an academic star and firm scientists about 3 more products in development, 1 more on the market and 1550 more employees are estimated. Such collaboration with firms, or employment, also results in significantly higher rates of citation to articles written with the firm. The U.S. scientific and economic infrastructure has been quite effective in fostering and commercializing the bioscientific revolution. To provide an indication of international competitiveness, we estimate stars' distribution, commercial involvement and migration across the top 10 countries in bioscience. These results let us inside the black box to see how scientific breakthroughs become economic growth and consider the implications for policy.

Active and Intelligent Packaging with Phase Change Materials to Promote the Shelf Life Extension of Food Products

    Get PDF
Active packaging aims to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables using active agents such as Oxygen, Carbon-di-oxide, ethylene scavengers and moisture absorber. Intelligent packaging provides information about the fruits quality inside the package to the customer and this packaging technology detects the internal changes of fruits and vegetables using sensors and indicators. Further to improve the post-harvest storage PCM such as Rubitherm can be used depending on the package box dimension to remove the field heat from the products and maintain its temperature with low variation during transport and display. Gel packs having less weight with PET and PS can also be an alternate method in the packaging. The application of these technologies may lead to a revolution in post-harvest storage, transportation, and further retail sale. This paper reviews the theoretical principles of food packaging and recent developments in packaging technologies using PCMs. Keywords: Active packaging, Intelligent packaging, Phase change materials, Shelf life extension, Fruit

Palau d'Esports Sala i Badrinas, Terrassa

My project consists of the making a sports arena in the city of Terrassa, specifically in Sala & Badrinas industrial complex, and old textile factory, built by the end of the nineteenth century and the current status of the place it’s abandoned. The idea of projecting a sports arena in Terrassa, is because the city doesn't have a proper indoor sports center able to host an important sporting event, for example, the biggest place is Can Jofresa Sports Centre with a capacity of 600 people. The other places present a similar architecture (box-shaped) and similar capacity around 400 people. This building will have a capacity around 4.000 people. I chose this place because of to the location. Which is in a position equidistant from the interesting points of the city. One of the reasons that will explain the appearance of this building is mainly that that I want to differentiate this sports arena from the other sport centers of the city. I searched curved shapes mixed with straight forms, this fact will create inside the Sala & Badrinas complex a play on shapes that I think will be interesting because you can distinguish the old from the new. But at the same time, with the northern roof-lights the new building will remind us of the old industrial constructions of the industrial revolution. Inside, the different heights of trussed beams, will give us a different sensation, not experimented in any sports building in the city

Galactic cosmic ray hydrogen spectra and radial gradients in the inner heliosphere measured by the HELIOS Experiment 6

Context: The HELIOS solar observation probes provide unique data regarding their orbit and operation time. One of the onboard instruments, the Experiment 6 (E6), is capable of measuring ions from 4 to several hundred MeV/nuc. Aims: In this paper we aim to demonstrate the relevance of the E6 data for the calculation of galactic cosmic ray (GCR), anomolous cosmic ray (ACR), and solar energetic particle (SEP) fluxes for different distances from the sun and time periods. Methods: Several corrections have been applied to the raw data: determination of the Quenching factor of the scintillator, correction of the temperature dependent electronics, degradation of the scintillator as well as the effects on the edge of semi-conductor detectors. Results: Fluxes measured by the E6 are in accordance with the force field solution for the GCR and match models of the anomalous cosmic ray propagation. GCR radial gradients in the inner heliosphere show a different behaviour than in the outer heliosphereComment: 8 pages, 10 figure

A New Materialism: A Reading of the New Art from China

    Get PDF
This essay has three parts. The first moves from what artists confronted when China was first opened to the west in 1978 to what two classical Chinese critics and artists said art was and how it was to be made. The second looks at artists’ works made between two exhibitions in the United States, one in 1998, the other in 2017, to find an uncanny reprise of the classical principles. The third looks at the ideas of the global, contemporary, and art through the works of Peter Osborne and Arthur Danto that apply to the new art from China

A compact ultra-clean system for deploying radioactive sources inside the KamLAND detector

We describe a compact, ultra-clean device used to deploy radioactive sources along the vertical axis of the KamLAND liquid-scintillator neutrino detector for purposes of calibration. The device worked by paying out and reeling in precise lengths of a hanging, small-gauge wire rope (cable); an assortment of interchangeable radioactive sources could be attached to a weight at the end of the cable. All components exposed to the radiopure liquid scintillator were made of chemically compatible UHV-cleaned materials, primarily stainless steel, in order to avoid contaminating or degrading the scintillator. To prevent radon intrusion, the apparatus was enclosed in a hermetically sealed housing inside a glove box, and both volumes were regularly flushed with purified nitrogen gas. An infrared camera attached to the side of the housing permitted real-time visual monitoring of the cable's motion, and the system was controlled via a graphical user interface.Comment: Revised author affiliations, corrected typos, made minor improvements to text, and revised reference
