    The relevance of application domains in empirical findings

    The term 'software ecosystem' refers to a collection of software systems that are related in some way. Researchers have been using different levels of aggregation to define an ecosystem: grouping them by a common named project (e.g., the Apache ecosystem); or considering all the projects contained in online repositories (e.g., the GoogleCode ecosystem). In this paper we propose a definition of ecosystem based on application domains: software systems are in the same ecosystem if they share the same application domain, as described by a similar technological scope, context or objective. As an example, all projects implementing networking capabilities to trade Bitcoin and other virtual currencies can be considered as part of the same "cryp-tocurrency" ecosystem. Utilising a sample of 100 Java software systems, we derive their application domains using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) approach. We then evaluate a suite of object-oriented metrics per ecosystem, and test a null hypothesis: 'the OO metrics of all ecosystems come from the same population'. Our results show that the null hypothesis is rejected for most of the metrics chosen: the ecosystems that we extracted, based on application domains, show different structural properties. From the point of view of the interested stakeholders, this could mean that the health of a software system depends on domain-dependent factors, that could be common to the projects in the same domain-based ecosystem

    Weight of evidence: a framework for the appraisal of the quality and relevance of evidence

    Knowledge use and production is complex and so also are attempts to judge its quality. Research synthesis is a set of formal processes to determine what is known from research in relation to different research questions and this process requires judgements of the quality and relevance of the research evidence considered. Such judgement can be according to generic standards or be specific to the review question. The judgements interact with other judgements in the review process such as inclusion criteria and search strategies and can be absolute or weighted judgements combined in a weight of evidence framework. Judgments also vary depending upon the type of review that can range from statistical meta analysis to meta ethnography. Empirical study of the ways that quality and relevance judgements are made can illuminate the nature of such decisions and their impact on epistemic and other domains of knowledge. Greater clarity about such ideological and theoretical differences can enable greater participative debates about such differences

    The intention to use mobile digital library technology: A focus group study in the United Arab Emirates

    IGI Global (“IGI”) granted Brunel University London the permission to archive this article in BURA (http://bura.brunel.ac.uk).This paper presents a qualitative study on student adoption of mobile library technology in a developing world context. The findings support the applicability of a number of existing constructs from the technology acceptance literature, such as perceived ease of use, social influence and trust. However, they also suggest the need to modify some adoption factors previously found in the literature to fit the specific context of mobile library adoption. Perceived value was found to be a more relevant overarching adoption factor than perceived usefulness for this context. Facilitating conditions were identified as important but these differed somewhat from those covered in earlier literature. The research also uncovered the importance of trialability for this type of application. The findings provide a basis for improving theory in the area of mobile library adoption and suggest a number of practical design recommendations to help designers of mobile library technology to create applications that meet user needs

    Determinants of patent citations in biotechnology: An analysis of patent influence across the industrial and organizational boundaries

    The present paper extends the literature investigating key drivers leading certain patents to exert a stronger influence on the subsequent technological developments (inventions) than other ones. We investigated six key determinants, as (i) the use of scientific knowledge, (ii) the breadth of the technological base, (iii) the existence of collaboration in patent development, (iv) the number of claims, (v) the scope, and (vi) the novelty, and how the effect of these determinants varies when patent influence—as measured by the number of forward citations the patent received—is distinguished as within and across the industrial and organizational boundaries. We conducted an empirical analysis on a sample of 5671 patents granted to 293 US biotechnology firms from 1976 to 2003. Results reveal that the contribution of the determinants to patent influence differs across the domains that are identified by the industrial and organizational boundaries. Findings, for example, show that the use of scientific knowledge negatively affects patent influence outside the biotechnology industry, while it positively contributes to make a patent more relevant for the assignee's subsequent technological developments. In addition, the broader the scope of a patent the higher the number of citations the patent receives from subsequent non-biotechnology patents. This relationship is inverted U-shaped when considering the influence of a patent on inventions granted to other organizations than the patent's assignee. Finally, the novelty of a patent is inverted-U related with the influence the patent exerts on the subsequent inventions granted across the industrial and organizational boundaries

    Construct redundancy in process modelling grammars: Improving the explanatory power of ontological analysis

    Conceptual modelling supports developers and users of information systems in areas of documentation, analysis or system redesign. The ongoing interest in the modelling of business processes has led to a variety of different grammars, raising the question of the quality of these grammars for modelling. An established way of evaluating the quality of a modelling grammar is by means of an ontological analysis, which can determine the extent to which grammars contain construct deficit, overload, excess or redundancy. While several studies have shown the relevance of most of these criteria, predictions about construct redundancy have yielded inconsistent results in the past, with some studies suggesting that redundancy may even be beneficial for modelling in practice. In this paper we seek to contribute to clarifying the concept of construct redundancy by introducing a revision to the ontological analysis method. Based on the concept of inheritance we propose an approach that distinguishes between specialized and distinct construct redundancy. We demonstrate the potential explanatory power of the revised method by reviewing and clarifying previous results found in the literature

Large scaled multimillion-dollar implementations of Enterpri se Systems explicitly and implicitly state the importance of process modeling and its contribution to the success of these project. While there has been much research and publications on alterna tive process modeling techniques and tools, little attention has focused on post-hoc evaluation of actual process modeling activities or on deriving comprehensive guidelines on ‘how-to’ conduct process modeling effectively. This study aims at addressing this gap. A comprehensive a priori pro cess modeling success model has been derived and this paper reports on the results obtained from a detailed case study at a leading Australian logistics service provider, which was conducted with the aim of testing and re-specifying the model

    National scientific capabilities and technological performance: An exploration of emerging industrial relevant research domains.

    Today's theories and models on innovation stress the importance of scientific capabilities and science-technology proximity, especially in new emerging fields of economic activity. In this contribution we examine the relationship between national scientific capabilities, the science intensity of technology and technological performance within six promising industrial fields. Our findings reveal that national technological performance is positively associated with scientific capabilities. Countries performing better on a technological level are characterized both by larger numbers of publications and by numbers of involved institutions that exceed average expected values. The latter observation holds for both companies and knowledge generating institutes actively involved in scientific activities. As such, our findings seem to suggest beneficial effects of scientific capabilities shouldered by a multitude of organizations. In addition, higher numbers of patent activity coincide with higher levels of science intensity pointing out the relevance of science 'proximity' when developing technology in newer, emerging fields.     How do venture capitalists inform their investors on the investment portfolio? An empirical investigation of the Belgian private equity market.

    Venture capital investments are valued for a variety of reasons. In particular, venture capital managers periodically need to reconsider the valuation of the investment portfolio in view of their proper corporate disclosure activities. After all, investors in venture capital funds require such valuation information to assess the value of their investment in the venture capital fund and to appraise the performance of the venture capital fund's management. How the valuation is determined as well as what information disclosing the valuation process is reported remains obviously a controversial subject. Nonetheless, one can identify two distinct levels of guidance regarding the valuation and reporting problem with which venture capitalists are confronted. On the one hand, they are subject, just as any other company, to the accounting and corporate regulation. On the other hand, a set of more detailed and specific guidelines was issued by the industry itself. Whereas an earlier study (Thoen, 2002) discussed in detail the precise consequences following from this double set of prescriptions and recommendations for practitioners, the objective of the present study was to examine the actual business practice. In fact, we were interested in testing the extent to which Belgian venture capitalists comply with both sets of requirements and guidelines.     A Perspective on the Potential Role of Neuroscience in the Court

    This Article presents some lessons learned while offering expert testimony on neuroscience in courts. As a biomedical investigator participating in cutting-edge research with clinical and mentoring responsibilities, Dr. Ruben Gur, Ph.D., became involved in court proceedings rather late in his career. Based on the success of Dr. Gur and other research investigators of his generation, who developed and validated advanced methods for linking brain structure and function to behavior, neuroscience findings and procedures became relevant to multiple legal issues, especially related to culpability and mitigation. Dr. Gur found himself being asked to opine in cases where he could contribute expertise on neuropsychological testing and structural and functional neuroimaging. Most of his medical-legal consulting experience has been in capital cases because of the elevated legal requirement for thorough mitigation investigations in such cases, and his limited availability due to his busy schedule as a full-time professor and research investigator who runs the Brain and Behavior Lab at the University of Pennsylvania (“Penn”). Courtroom testimony, however, has not been a topic of his research and so he has not published extensively on the issues in peer-reviewed literature
