    A People-centered Approach to Historic Gardens: The Influence of Social, Political and Economic Factors on Management and Fruition

    Historic gardens are heritage properties of great environmental, cultural, social, political and economic value, yet they are also precarious because they are composed of living elements. Their survival, in fact, depends on constant care. This research project seeks to analyze the social, political and economic factors influencing the management and fruition of historic gardens to improve their conservation and ability to contribute to human wellbeing and quality of life. These themes are both missing from existing literature and relevant to current trends in historic garden conservation and fruition made even more evident by the COVID-19 pandemic. Various research methodologies are applied in pursuit of the research aim, including: qualitative interviews providing a first-hand account of the motivations and struggles of those who care for historic gardens; a systematic review of the literature to trace the development of themes and trends in the research and identify significant gaps; document content analysis to make sense of the various political entities and instruments governing historic gardens; spatial analysis to investigate the potential and actual influence of heritage lists on recreational ecosystem service demand; the zonal travel cost method to assess the actual economic value of recreational ecosystem services created by an event in a historic garden. Some of the investigations conducted as part of the dissertation use the city of Palermo (Italy) as a case study to analyze the problems affecting historic garden management and fruition. Palermo’s parks and gardens have been celebrated throughout history, and they still make up most the city’s green spaces. However, they are also recognized as being neglected and deteriorating. Palermo is also a good model for internationally relevant issues related to historic gardens, including the effect of economic and health crises on the management and fruition of green spaces, public austerity, dysfunctional bureaucracy, sustainable development and wellbeing, making the results of these investigations relevant internationally as well as locally. The results of this research provide a people-centered perspective on the management and fruition of historic gardens. By considering the social, political and economic contexts in which they exist, the research identified developments in natural and cultural heritage practice, policy and planning that have important implications for historic garden management and fruition. Recent policy has focused on issues of sustainability and wellbeing, and consequentially put more emphasis on the experiences these heritage sites provide and on the stakeholders they involve. With this perspective, public engagement initiatives organized in historic gardens play an important role in involving the community, creating meaningful experiences and creating economic value. They are human inputs that transform potential cultural ecosystem service benefits into actual benefits. These findings also have implications for the governance, planning management and fruition of other resources valued for their cultural ecosystem services. The research presented here can also be fruitfully applied to investigations of the various cultural ecosystem services provided by such areas as urban green spaces, cultural landscapes and nature reserves. These qualitative, spatial and economic assessments are necessary to ensure that public policy measures, investments, and private or non-profit management strategies are effective in meeting their objectives to contribute to human wellbeing and conserve resources for the future

    The Use of visitor management techniques to protect a fragile environment.

    Tourism, as a human activity, is not likely to be managed effectively if there was a lack of management focus on the visitors. Visitor management plays a vital role in a tourism destination in terms of increasing visitors' experience and level of enjoyment, as well as modifying their on-site behaviour to be more appropriate. Through a combination of various techniques, visitors are provided with controlled access to experience the tourism resources. In so doing, visitors' understanding and appreciation of the features at a site may be increased through the use of interpretation, while restrictions, regulations and resource alteration methods are used to protect the resources from inappropriate visitor activity. Interpretation, restrictions, regulations and other management-related/administrative information need to be delivered to visitors. Furthermore, persuasive communication is effective to modify visitors' on-site behaviour. Regulations and restrictions are usually law-enforced. Because their persuasive function is of coercive type (the managing agencies have the ability to administer punishment if visitors fall to comply with the regulations), visitors' level of enjoyment and understanding of the features at a site is less likely to be increased. A softer style of persuasive communication with visitors (interpretation, marketing and visitor codes) is therefore necessary in order to advise visitors about the sensitivity of the resources and the appropriate behaviour to conduct during their visit. In other words, the hard and soft approaches of visitor management should be used interdependently. Hence, the understanding of (1) how people's intention to behave in a particular manner is formed, and (2) how to maximise the effectiveness of communication, is necessary in order to plan and implement successful visitor management. The visitor survey was carried out in the calendar year of 1999, and 1,053 visitors participated in the research.T he questionnaire-baseds urvey of visitors was conducted at several locations in the New Forest, and the number of surveys to be carried out was distributed throughout the year of 1999 based on the tourism seasonality of the New Forest. The research findings point out that imposing more regulations is not perceived necessary in the current visitor management in the New Forest. Instead, the sampled visitors would like to know more about the environmental aspects about the site, and the appropriate activities to participate in. Moreover, infori-nation provided through interpretive panels and bulletin boards is thought to be less than adequate by the visitors, and they think the signage in the site is not maintained to a high standard. Give the fact that signage is one of the favoured media, the quality and information contents of signage in the New Forest need to be improved. Moreover, with respect to the interpretation of the New Forest, visitors thought the information relating to the envirom-nental aspects of the site and the appropriate visitor activities to be carried out should be improved in terms of the quantity. The analysis shows that in general, visitors would be willing to alter their behaviour to be more appropriate if they were made aware of such interpretive information. In addition, the majority of the visitors, except for the New Forest District local residents, do not object to be charged for the use of tourism facilities such as car parks, providing the revenue is used for resource protection purpose. In other words, visitors value the significance of the New Forest in terms of being resource rich and being an important site that offers recreational opportunities to them. Thus, they expressed their willingness to contribute financially to help the management and protection of the site. The research findings are expected to provide organisations that are responsible for the management of tourism destinations with information relating to the planning and implementation of effective visitor management approaches, because successful visitor management is a step forward towards the long-ten-n sustainable tourism development

    This paper aims to introduce the concept of data analysis which could easily be implemented by anybody involved in the subject matter with basic IT knowledge and skills. The paper is divided into two parts, the first of which presents an overview of related research from two points of view: (1) publications which refer to the analysis, or the overall use of open data from the tourism domain and (2) publications which use business intelligence tools to analyse tourism data. Results indicate that there is a significant number of publications but none of them combines the two issues in the field of tourism (open data and business intelligence). The second part refers to the possibilities of using Power BI, the business intelligence tool for analysing available open data about tourism in Serbia.Publishe

    Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Monitoring and Management of Visitors in Recreational and Protected Areas (MMV9), Bordeaux, FRA, 29-/08/2018 - 31/08/2018It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 9th international Conference on Monitoring and Management of Visitors in Recreational and Protected Areas (MMV9) with a program including keynote speeches, organized and poster sessions, a half-day field trip, social events and post conference trips. This is the first time that France has hosted an MMV Conference. Our country is ranked as the world's top tourist destination, thanks largely to its culture, art, and gastronomy, as well as popular cities such as Paris and Bordeaux. On the other hand, France's potential as a destination for outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism is not hugely publicized, despite its many unique features in this respect: varied climate and natural assets (shoreline, mountains, lakes, and forests), large expanses of countryside, and a network of protected natural areas, to name but a few. France's protected areas are often free to access for the general public. However, in contrast with other countries, nature conservation in specific areas is much less widespread. Where it does take place, it is often centered on territories that are perceived to be "attractive", and where many conflicting activities are practiced. This may be one of the reasons why contractual tools and regional park systems are quite popular in France. The MMV Conference offers an excellent opportunity to discuss the situation in France in greater depth. The theme proposed for the conference was "recreation, place and local development". This reflects our assumption that recreational areas are not just physical assets designed to receive visitors for the purpose of leisure - which in itself would already be something of great importance - but that they reflect deeper social phenomena, as demonstrated through the range of organized sessions dedicated to discussing questions such as environmental education and economic development, but also emerging themes such as social integration, community resilience, environmental justice, and health. The traditional topics covered by MMV Conference reflect an evolving society: with innovations in monitoring techniques (both on people and nature), focus on new populations (Y generation, ethnic minority) and a larger concern for individual engagement and participative management. The 9th Edition of MMV is co-hosted by Irstea and BSA. This would not have been possible without significant contributions from a large number of additional partners and sponsors as well as our national scientific and organizing committee. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help. After two years of planning, we are proud to announce that we have more than 160 presentations from 30 countries, meaning that the conference will host over 200 participants from across the globe. We are honored that the International Steering Committee has given us the opportunity to be part of this great MMV community, which organized its first meeting in 2002. We hope you will enjoy the conference as much as we enjoyed organizing it. If you can't be with us in person, we hope that you will enjoy reading our publications
