The object of this work are the international experiences of implementation of digital preservation practices in repositories. It based on bibliographical survey about the beginning of digital preservation practices in digital repositories, identifying important aspects of how to manage the practices of digital preservation on repositories. Most repositories analyzed showed a double function of access and preservation, but few could be considered to be "dark archives" used only for preservation matters. The application of digital preservation standards showed that large institutions possessed detailed definitions of what stored materials could be filed and used. Repositories managers had some kind of operating budget to carry on preservation activities. Most repositories cited in the bibliography used a combination of commercial tools and free software. As a conclusion, the records analyzed reinforce the need today of the application of digital preservation strategies using the OAIS Reference Model and official audit certification actions on the design of digital preservation repositories, to keep the integration flexibility of functions and services that go beyond the repository

Repository Staff Perspectives on the Benefits of Trustworthy Digital Repository Certification

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the results from a qualitative study that asks whether and how staff members from TRAC certified repositories find value in the audit and certification process. While some interviewees found certification valuable, others argued that the costs outweighed the benefits or expressed ambivalence towards certification. Findings indicate that TRAC certification offered both internal and external benefits, such as improved documentation, accountability, transparency, communication, and standards, but there were concerns about high costs, implementation problems, and lack of objective evaluation criteria

    Disaster planning for digital repositories

This study examines how digital repositories with a preservation mandate are engaging in disaster planning, particularly in relation to their pursuit of trusted digital repository status. For those that are engaging in disaster planning, the study examines the creation of formal disaster response and recovery plans. Findings indicate that the process of going through an audit for certification as a trusted repository provides the incentive needed for the creation of formalized disaster planning documentation, and that repositories struggle with making their documentation available. This study also finds several significant obstacles with regard to the creation of formal disaster planning documentation, including the efforts required to get buy‐in from different functional areas within the organization, difficulty collaborating with the IT department, and the amount of time required for completion of the documentation.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/106841/1/14505001058_ftp.pd

This study has three aims; to provide an overview of the ways in which trust is either assessed or asserted in relation to the use and provision of resources in the Web environment for research and learning; to assess what solutions might be worth further investigation and whether establishing ways to assert trust in academic information resources could assist the development of information literacy; to help increase understanding of how perceptions of trust influence the behaviour of information users

The nestor Catalogue of Criteria for Trusted Digital Repository Evaluation and Certification

    No full text
This paper describes the general approach nestor – the German “Network of Expertise in Long-Term Storage of Digital Resources” has taken in order to design a catalogue of criteria for trusted digital repositories used for long-term preservation issues. Further developments are intended to led to the implementation of evaluation schemas and a formal certification process for trusted digital repositories

Implementing a trusted repository to support the storage and preservation of research data at the national research foundation (NRF)

Abstracts in English, Sotho and ZuluThe purpose of this research was to identify critical factors necessary for the implementation of a trusted repository for managing research data. A research data survey was conducted with 36 Information professionals at the NRF to investigate the state of readiness at the organisation for implementing the repository. According to the survey results a need was identified for storage and preservation of student data, databases and reports managed by the Information professionals. Other research data types that are mostly generated were Websites, Databases and manuals that require secure storage. The study further revealed the need for metadata training in the organisation as an important component for research data preservation. More than half of the Information professionals revealed that their metadata is system generated and there is minimum involvement required from them. Through the review of the existing literature and the NRF data survey, the researcher was able to bring forward recommendations that can be applied for improvement of preservation services. Recommendations made include that professionals should be trained, there should be policy development and review of existing research data within the organisation. Secure storage mediums should be an investment for the organisation based on the research data generated through research activities and managed by the NRF professionals.Morero oa lipatlisiso tsena e ne e le ho supa lintlha tsa bohlokoa tse hlokahalang bakeng sa ho kenya tsebetsong polokelo e tsepahalang ea taolo ea data ea lipatlisiso. Strategies for preservation of digital records in Masvingo Province of Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been embraced by a number of public institutions in Masvingo province of Zimbabwe as part of the government’s drive towards e-governance and improved service delivery. This has resulted in the generation of large volumes of digital records that are invaluable for strengthening accountability, transparency, decision making and service delivery. Preservation of these digital records has been cited as a daunting task for most institutions especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The dynamic nature of information technologies, obsolescence issues, as well as media degradation require digital preservation strategies in place to ensure that digital records remain accessible and usable over time. However, the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) mandated to preserve all types of records is at the moment unable to ingest digital records from public departments for preservation due to lack of adequate digital storage facilities and skilled manpower. The records creating agencies in Masvingo have been left on their own to deal with the digital preservation conundrum yet they are also faced with similar challenges. This qualitative study utilised the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model as the conceptual framework to explore the strategies for preservation of digital records in Masvingo province in Zimbabwe. Data was gathered through interviews with officials from 13 out of 15 public departments that preserved digital records in Masvingo province, augmented by observation and document analysis. Research data was manually processed and thematically analysed in line with the objectives of the study. The study established that the strategies for preservation of digital records in Masvingo province were failing to guarantee their long-term preservation and security due to lack of supportive legislation, standards, policy guidelines, budgets, adequate and conducive infrastructure and skills. This has resulted in swathes of digital memory being lost. The study recommended the adoption of trusted digital repositories (TDRs) that are compliant to the OAIS standard, close co-operation between records creating agencies, NAZ, information technology (IT) experts and the academia in tackling digital preservation challenges, and the development of preservation policies and guidelines, as well as continuous training and provision of budgets to cater for preservation of digital records. In the absence of infrastructure, the NAZ should consider cloud computing for preservation of digital records as an interim solution while observing legal obligations.Information ScienceM. Inf. This work aims to place the digital repositories within the Digital Preservation subject, and analyze how these can be considered trustworthy by their users. In this sense, it addresses standards and other documents that present requirements as an end for certification, and as elements that promote and strengthen the trust in digital repositories, also including a comparison proposal between the TRAC, the ISO 16363:2012, and the NESTOR standards. Also in this context is presented the RODA, a long-term preservation-oriented digital repository, venturing its assessment based on the requirements proposed by the said documents
