Indicadores de desempenho, ciência brasileira e a cobertura das bases informacionais

Devising and organizing mechanisms to evaluate and monitor scientific activities has become a routine practice among many research support institutions in developed countries since the 1960s. It can be noted that, along with peer-review procedures, the performance of science and of scientists has turned out to be measured and evaluated by means of objective parameters, and many of them fall within the scope of the studies of Scientometry. Throughout decades, the interest in indicators of producti-vity (number of publications) and of visibility (number of citations) has spread, and they are largely used in most countries. Such process was no different in Brazil: the main agencies have made use of those indicators to make public and estimate the performance of Brazilian science, and also to provide support to models for evalua-ting individuals and institutions, as is the case with the graduate programs. This text aims at placing Scientometry into the context of mechanisms of science monitoring, as well as providing a panorama of the main characteristics of Brazilian science, pointed out in many scientometric studies. Finally, it discusses the limitations of the main information bases which have been served a source for studies of this nature.A elaboração e organização de mecanismos para avaliar e monitorar as atividades científicas tornou-se uma prática rotineira entre os diversos órgãos de fomento de países desenvolvidos a partir dos anos de 1960. Observa-se, assim, que, juntamente com a avaliação pelos pares, o desempenho da ciência e dos cientistas passou a ser medido e avaliado por parâmetros objetivos, sendo muitos deles do escopo dos estudos da cientometria. Ao longo das últimas décadas, o interesse por indicadores de produtividade (número de publicações) e de visibilidade (número de citações) disseminou-se, sendo amplamente utilizados na maior parte dos países. No Brasil, esse processo não foi diferente; as principais agências têm se apropriado desses indicadores tanto para divulgar e estimar o desempenho da ciência brasileira assim como para dar suporte a modelos de avaliação individuais e institucionais, como no caso dos programas de pós-graduação. Este texto pretende contextualizar a cientometria nos mecanismos de monitoramento da ciência, assim como dar um panorama das principais características da ciência brasileira, apontadas em diferentes estudos cientométricos e, por fim, discutir as limitações das principais bases informacionais que têm servido de fonte para estudos dessa natureza

Chemistry brazilian scientific journals indexed in Scopus: characteristics and internacionalization

Objective. It reports the study that investigated Brazilian scientific journals which publish Chemistry content indexed in Scopus, regarding their characteristics and internationalization. The journals of the research corpus were characterized (sections in which they are published, periodicity, languages accepted for publication, average number of articles per issue, SJR and Impact Factor, indexation in other databases), comprising 8 titles; It was described the Qualis evaluation of the journals in their coverage areas; it was verified the existence of co-authorship in the articles analyzed by establishing a comparative to the twentieth century and, at last, it was characterized the authors who published papers in 2014, with the report of their home countries and languages in which the analyzed articles were published. Method. Data collection was performed by consulting pages of the magazines and websites of Lattes Platform, Sucupira Platform, SCImago Journal & Country Rank and JCR. For data analysis of the authors, the statistical software “R” was used with the purpose to examine data frequencies. Results. Among the results are: 75% of the titles have indexation in databases of complete text or referential other than Scopus and there is a predominance of domestic scientific collaboration (developed by authors from the same country)
