World Guide to Technical Information and Documentation Services. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Paris: UNESCO, 1969. 287 pp. Hardbound, 4.00 (available in U.S.A. from Unipub. Inc., P.O. Box 433, New York City, N.Y. 10016).
Excerpt: This very useful reference volume is a companion to UNESCO\u27s World Guide to Science Information and Documentation Services (1965). It lists and describes the principal centers in each country which provide technical information, either to all investigators or to a restricted clientele. 273 institutions in 73 countries have been included, with an informative yet concise report upon each source. A sampIe entry lists name of repository in the vernacular, English, French and acronym; addresses; brief history; staff; subject coverage; nature of library; nature of abstracting service; whether bibliographies, literature searches or translations are available; information about photoreproduction services; and methods of payment for services. The remarkable proliferation of information sources in science and technology makes such guides not only convenient but necessary
Post processing of differential images for direct extrasolar planet detection from the ground
The direct imaging from the ground of extrasolar planets has become today a
major astronomical and biological focus. This kind of imaging requires
simultaneously the use of a dedicated high performance Adaptive Optics [AO]
system and a differential imaging camera in order to cancel out the flux coming
from the star. In addition, the use of sophisticated post-processing techniques
is mandatory to achieve the ultimate detection performance required. In the
framework of the SPHERE project, we present here the development of a new
technique, based on Maximum A Posteriori [MAP] approach, able to estimate
parameters of a faint companion in the vicinity of a bright star, using the
multi-wavelength images, the AO closed-loop data as well as some knowledge on
non-common path and differential aberrations. Simulation results show a 10^-5
detectivity at 5sigma for angular separation around 15lambda/D with only two
images.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, This paper will be published in the proceedings

Use and Conservation of the Biosphere: Proceedings of the Intergovernmental Conference of Experts on the Scientific Basis for Rational Use and Conservation of the Resources of the Bioshpere, Paris, 4-13 September 1968. Paris: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 1970. 272 pp. Paper, $6.00 (available in U.S.A. from Unipub, Inc., P.O. Box 433, New York, N.Y. 10016).
Excerpt: The Intergovernmental Conference of Experts on the Scientific Basis for Rational Use and Conservatiori of the Resources of the Biosphere was sponsored by UNESCO and attended by 326 delegates from 63 nations, 11 international organizations, and 14 nongovernmental organizations. For the purposes of discussion, the biosphere was defined as being that part of the planet earth in which life exists. The resources considered were largely restricted to living organisms; inorganic resources were included only insofar as they provide a medium for the support of plant and animal life. Oceanic resources were left to other international conferences for study
The SPHERE data center: a reference for high contrast imaging processing
The objective of the SPHERE Data Center is to optimize the scientific return
of SPHERE at the VLT, by providing optimized reduction procedures, services to
users and publicly available reduced data. This paper describes our motivation,
the implementation of the service (partners, infrastructure and developments),
services, description of the on-line data, and future developments. The SPHERE
Data Center is operational and has already provided reduced data with a good
reactivity to many observers. The first public reduced data have been made
available in 2017. The SPHERE Data Center is gathering a strong expertise on
SPHERE data and is in a very good position to propose new reduced data in the
future, as well as improved reduction procedures.Comment: SF2A proceeding
Bibliographic Resources for Literature Searches on J.R.R Tolkien
This guide is designed to help the student, scholar, or thesis writer begin an in-depth literature search on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. This guide is geared towards the English-speaking, North American user, but I have attempted to include European sources as well when I am aware of them. As this is a field friendly to independent scholars not attached to a university or college, I am addressing their information needs as well
