On connectivity-dependent resource requirements for digital quantum simulation of -level particles
A primary objective of quantum computation is to efficiently simulate quantum
physics. Scientifically and technologically important quantum Hamiltonians
include those with spin-, vibrational, photonic, and other bosonic degrees
of freedom, i.e. problems composed of or approximated by -level particles
(qudits). Recently, several methods for encoding these systems into a set of
qubits have been introduced, where each encoding's efficiency was studied in
terms of qubit and gate counts. Here, we build on previous results by including
effects of hardware connectivity. To study the number of SWAP gates required to
Trotterize commonly used quantum operators, we use both analytical arguments
and automatic tools that optimize the schedule in multiple stages. We study the
unary (or one-hot), Gray, standard binary, and block unary encodings, with
three connectivities: linear array, ladder array, and square grid. Among other
trends, we find that while the ladder array leads to substantial efficiencies
over the linear array, the advantage of the square over the ladder array is
less pronounced. These results are applicable in hardware co-design and in
choosing efficient qudit encodings for a given set of near-term quantum
hardware. Additionally, this work may be relevant to the scheduling of other

A New General Method to Generate Random Modal Formulae for Testing Decision Procedures
The recent emergence of heavily-optimized modal decision procedures has
highlighted the key role of empirical testing in this domain. Unfortunately,
the introduction of extensive empirical tests for modal logics is recent, and
so far none of the proposed test generators is very satisfactory. To cope with
this fact, we present a new random generation method that provides benefits
over previous methods for generating empirical tests. It fixes and much
generalizes one of the best-known methods, the random CNF_[]m test, allowing
for generating a much wider variety of problems, covering in principle the
whole input space. Our new method produces much more suitable test sets for the
current generation of modal decision procedures. We analyze the features of the
new method by means of an extensive collection of empirical tests

Introduction to clarithmetic I
"Clarithmetic" is a generic name for formal number theories similar to Peano
arithmetic, but based on computability logic (see
http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html) instead of the more traditional
classical or intuitionistic logics. Formulas of clarithmetical theories
represent interactive computational problems, and their "truth" is understood
as existence of an algorithmic solution. Imposing various complexity
constraints on such solutions yields various versions of clarithmetic. The
present paper introduces a system of clarithmetic for polynomial time
computability, which is shown to be sound and complete. Sound in the sense that
every theorem T of the system represents an interactive number-theoretic
computational problem with a polynomial time solution and, furthermore, such a
solution can be efficiently extracted from a proof of T. And complete in the
sense that every interactive number-theoretic problem with a polynomial time
solution is represented by some theorem T of the system. The paper is written
in a semitutorial style and targets readers with no prior familiarity with
computability logic
History-Register Automata
Programs with dynamic allocation are able to create and use an unbounded
number of fresh resources, such as references, objects, files, etc. We propose
History-Register Automata (HRA), a new automata-theoretic formalism for
modelling such programs. HRAs extend the expressiveness of previous approaches
and bring us to the limits of decidability for reachability checks. The
distinctive feature of our machines is their use of unbounded memory sets
(histories) where input symbols can be selectively stored and compared with
symbols to follow. In addition, stored symbols can be consumed or deleted by
reset. We show that the combination of consumption and reset capabilities
renders the automata powerful enough to imitate counter machines, and yields
closure under all regular operations apart from complementation. We moreover
examine weaker notions of HRAs which strike different balances between

Optimal Reachability in Divergent Weighted Timed Games
Weighted timed games are played by two players on a timed automaton equipped
with weights: one player wants to minimise the accumulated weight while
reaching a target, while the other has an opposite objective. Used in a
reactive synthesis perspective, this quantitative extension of timed games
allows one to measure the quality of controllers. Weighted timed games are
notoriously difficult and quickly undecidable, even when restricted to
non-negative weights. Decidability results exist for subclasses of one-clock
games, and for a subclass with non-negative weights defined by a semantical
restriction on the weights of cycles. In this work, we introduce the class of
divergent weighted timed games as a generalisation of this semantical
restriction to arbitrary weights. We show how to compute their optimal value,
yielding the first decidable class of weighted timed games with negative
weights and an arbitrary number of clocks. In addition, we prove that
divergence can be decided in polynomial space. Last, we prove that for untimed
games, this restriction yields a class of games for which the value can be
computed in polynomial time
A logical basis for constructive systems
The work is devoted to Computability Logic (CoL) -- the
philosophical/mathematical platform and long-term project for redeveloping
classical logic after replacing truth} by computability in its underlying
semantics (see http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html). This article
elaborates some basic complexity theory for the CoL framework. Then it proves
soundness and completeness for the deductive system CL12 with respect to the
semantics of CoL, including the version of the latter based on polynomial time
computability instead of computability-in-principle. CL12 is a sequent calculus
system, where the meaning of a sequent intuitively can be characterized as "the
succedent is algorithmically reducible to the antecedent", and where formulas
are built from predicate letters, function letters, variables, constants,
identity, negation, parallel and choice connectives, and blind and choice
quantifiers. A case is made that CL12 is an adequate logical basis for
constructive applied theories, including complexity-oriented ones
