Accurate and automatic NOAA-AVHRR image navigation using a global contour matching approach
The problem of precise and automatic AVHRR image navigation is tractable in theory, but has proved to be somewhat difficult in practice. The authors' work has been motivated by the need for a fully automatic and operational navigation system capable of geo-referencing NOAA-AVHRR images with high accuracy and without operator supervision. The proposed method is based on the simultaneous use of an orbital model and a contour matching approach. This last process, relying on an affine transformation model, is used to correct the errors caused by inaccuracies in orbit modeling, nonzero value for the spacecraft's roll, pitch and yaw, errors due to inaccuracies in the satellite positioning and failures in the satellite internal clock. The automatic global contour matching process is summarized as follows: i) Estimation of the gradient energy map (edges) in the sensed image and detection of the cloudless (reliable) areas in this map. ii) Initialization of the affine model parameters by minimizing the Euclidean distance between the reference and sensed images objects. iii) Simultaneous optimization of all reference image contours on the sensed image by energy minimization in the domain of the global transformation parameters. The process is iterated in a hierarchical way, reducing the parameter searching space at each iteration. Categorization of indoor places using the Kinect sensor
The categorization of places in indoor environments is an important capability for service robots working and interacting with humans. In this paper we present a method to categorize different areas in indoor environments using a mobile robot equipped with a Kinect camera. Our approach transforms depth and grey scale images taken at each place into histograms of local binary patterns (LBPs) whose dimensionality is further reduced following a uniform criterion. The histograms are then combined into a single feature vector which is categorized using a supervised method. In this work we compare the performance of support vector machines and random forests as supervised classifiers. Finally, we apply our technique to distinguish five different place categories: corridors, laboratories, offices, kitchens, and study rooms. Experimental results show that we can categorize these places with high accuracy using our approach
On the co-orbital motion in the planar restricted three-body problem: the quasi-satellite motion revisited
In the framework of the planar and circular restricted three-body problem, we
consider an asteroid that orbits the Sun in quasi-satellite motion with a
planet. A quasi-satellite trajectory is a heliocentric orbit in co-orbital
resonance with the planet, characterized by a non zero eccentricity and a
resonant angle that librates around zero. Likewise, in the rotating frame with
the planet it describes the same trajectory as the one of a retrograde
satellite even though the planet acts as a perturbator. In the last few years,
the discoveries of asteroids in this type of motion made the term
"quasi-satellite" more and more present in the literature. However, some
authors rather use the term "retrograde satellite" when referring to this kind
of motion in the studies of the restricted problem in the rotating frame. In
this paper we intend to clarify the terminology to use, in order to bridge the
gap between the perturbative co-orbital point of view and the more general
approach in the rotating frame. Through a numerical exploration of the
co-orbital phase space, we describe the quasi-satellite domain and highlight
that it is not reachable by low eccentricities by averaging process. We will
show that the quasi-satellite domain is effectively included in the domain of
the retrograde satellites and neatly defined in terms of frequencies.
Eventually, we highlight a remarkable high eccentric quasi-satellite orbit
corresponding to a frozen ellipse in the heliocentric frame. We extend this
result to the eccentric case (planet on an eccentric motion) and show that two

Convolutional Color Constancy
Color constancy is the problem of inferring the color of the light that
illuminated a scene, usually so that the illumination color can be removed.
Because this problem is underconstrained, it is often solved by modeling the
statistical regularities of the colors of natural objects and illumination. In
contrast, in this paper we reformulate the problem of color constancy as a 2D
spatial localization task in a log-chrominance space, thereby allowing us to
apply techniques from object detection and structured prediction to the color
constancy problem. By directly learning how to discriminate between correctly
white-balanced images and poorly white-balanced images, our model is able to
improve performance on standard benchmarks by nearly 40%
Exploring individual user differences in the 2D/3D interaction with medical image data
User-centered design is often performed without regard to individual user differences. In this paper, we report results of an empirical study aimed to evaluate whether computer experience and demographic user characteristics would have an effect on the way people interact with the visualized medical data in a 3D virtual environment using 2D and 3D input devices.
