    Kyiv, Ukraine - Revised Edition

    Get PDF
The unrest and violence in Ukraine in recent years shocked the world, and the region's long-term future remains troublingly uncertain. Focusing on the difficulty of Kiev's transition from socialism to market democracy, this book demonstrates how Ukraine reached this turbulent point. Roman Adrian Cybriwsky delves deeply into the changing social geography of the city, recent urban development, and critical problems such as official corruption, inequality, sex tourism, and the heedless destruction of the city's historical architecture - all difficulties that have contributed incrementally to Ukrainian citizens' anger against their government. This thoroughly revised edition brings Cybriwsky's account of events and their ramifications fully up to date, offering the clearest picture we've had yet of what has happened - and what is likely still to come - in Ukraine

    The Joint Arctic Weather Stations

    Get PDF
This is the first systematic account of the Joint Arctic Weather Stations (JAWS), a collaborative science program between Canada and the United States that created a distinctive state presence in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago from 1946-1972. These five meteorological stations, constructed at Eureka, Resolute, Isachsen, Mould Bay, and Alert, became remote hubs for science and sovereignty, revealing the possibilities and limits of modernity in the High Arctic. Drawing on extensive archival evidence, unpublished personal memoirs, and interviews with former JAWS personnel, this book systematically analyzes the diplomatic, scientific, social, environmental, and civil-military dimensions of this binational program. From the corridors of power in Washington and Ottawa to everyday life at the small outposts, The Joint Arctic Weather Stations explores delicate statecraft, changing scientific practices, as well as the distinctive station cultures that emerged as humans coped with isolation in polar environments

Draw My Life: An analysis of the quantity and typology of emotional linguistic content in self-identified female and male YouTubers’ life narratives

Richard Bud Meade worked in Human Resources at the College at Brockport from 1968-2000. He knew many of our faculty and staff and in retirement he began to circulate an email newsletter which passed on stories and news about various college retirees. This remarkable, ongoing project has captured a tremendous amount of information about the folks who built the college over the last 50 years. This collection of his Update is searchable, and covers from the beginning in 2001 up to August, 2020. More will be added as time goes on..

    Terrorists on Trial

    Get PDF
Terrorism trials are an exceptional opportunity for better understanding and, hence, countering terrorism, since they are often the only place where most if not all of the actors of a terrorist incident meet again, and where the media report and broadcast their respective accounts. Seeing terrorism trials as a stage where legal instruments are used (and abused) to argue the validity of contested political constructs, this study presents a performative perspective to draw attention to the mechanisms and effects of terrorism trials in and outside the courtroom. With a special focus on how the power of these performances may in turn shape new narratives of justice and/or injustice, it offers vital insights into terrorism trials directed involving different types of terrorism suspects, from left-wing to ethno-nationalist and jihadist terrorists, in Spain, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US

Designing a Comprehensive School-Wide Program in Character Development and Leadership for High School Students

    Get PDF
All independent college preparatory schools maintain that they teach their students leadership and provide opportunities for character development. In addition, most colleges and universities are looking for students who possess strong character and leadership skills. With few exceptions, the leadership and character development programs of most independent schools do nothing more than provide students with opportunities to lead their peers through election to student government, the appointment of captains on sports teams, or through the leadership of non-athletic extra curricular activities such as clubs, yearbook, drama productions, or Model U.N. Typically these opportunities are supported and enhanced by surrounding the students with examples of character and leadership present in the school’s faculty, with the hope that before they graduate, the students will have somehow become good leaders. This model for teaching leadership skills and character development is outdated. The world has changed significantly and the pull on young people to stray from the development of good character, solid work habits, and upstanding citizenship is ceaseless and omnipresent. To help students develop and meet the challenges they face in the 2000’s, independent schools must engage in a more purposeful instruction in character development and leadership. There are schools and universities that take purposeful approaches to the teaching of character development and leadership. Interviews with school leadership from The Haverford School, The Hyde School, Eagle Academy, The Pennington School and The United States Naval Academy, provided insights into some of the best practices in schools that have centered their school cultures on character development and the teaching of leadership. Other research focused on the learning habits, social structures and societal challenges, faced by adolescent boys and girls in the present day. A program in character development and leadership skills for high school students must represent a school wide cultural shift to a curriculum steeped in good character and leadership instruction. The program presented is centered on the introduction of a culture based in honor principals and restorative justice, a year of direct classroom instruction in character development and leadership for every student, and four years of project-based curriculum where students will participate in, and eventually lead, school wide projects in community service, environmental sustainability, social justice, and team leadership. To reach a student body of diverse learners, the curriculum for the character development and leadership program utilizes an interdisciplinary approach, multimedia presentations, hands-on learning opportunities, healthy motivational competition, and the ability for students to gain leadership opportunities in their areas of personal interest. Moreover, because the program presented provides for character and leadership instruction for every student in the school, the student body is comprised of and surrounded by a culture of leadership and character

Computer Chess: From Idea to DeepMind

    Get PDF
Computer chess has stimulated human imagination over some two hundred and fifty years. In 1769 Baron Wolfgang von Kempelen promised Empress Maria Theresia in public: “I will invent a machine for a more compelling spectacle [than the magnetism tricks by Pelletier] within half a year.” The idea of an intelligent chess machine was born. In 1770 the first demonstration was given. The real development of artificial intelligence (AI) began in 1950 and contains many well-known names, such as Turing and Shannon. One of the first AI research areas was chess. In 1997, a high point was to be reported: world champion Gary Kasparov had been defeated by Deep Blue. The techniques used included searching, knowledge representation, parallelism, and distributed systems. Adaptivity, machine learning and the recently developed deep learning mechanism were only later on added to the computer chess research techniques. The major breakthrough for games in general (including chess) took place in 2017 when (1) the AlphaGo Zero program defeated the world championship program AlphaGo by 100-0 and (2) the technique of deep learning also proved applicable to chess. In the autumn of 2017, the Stockfish program was beaten by AlphaZero by 28-0 (with 72 draws, resulting in a 64-36 victory). However, the end of the disruptive advance is not yet in reach. In fact, we have just started. The next milestone will be to determine the theoretical game value of chess (won, draw, or lost). This achievement will certainly be followed by other surprising developments.Algorithms and the Foundations of Software technolog
