The Sieve of Overspecialization

Using Ulrich Beck‟s focus on experts as the source of unintended risks in society, this paper speculates on the consequences of linking the concepts of privacy and security too closely. The argument is made that this constructed linkage attracts separate and fairly narrow fields of technical expertise that focus on a very limited definition of the problem and hence the potential solutions derived. It is argued that this expertise focuses on small “p” privacy (data and rules about data) and that a failure to address privacy substantively understates the potential costs of security failures and that, paradoxically, a serious engagement with concept of the privacy may lead to more effective attention on data and its security

Similarity and diversity: two sides of the same coin in the evaluation of data streams

The Information Systems represent the primary instrument of growth for the companies that operate in the so-called e-commerce environment. The data streams generated by the users that interact with their websites are the primary source to define the user behavioral models. Some main examples of services integrated in these websites are the Recommender Systems, where these models are exploited in order to generate recommendations of items of potential interest to users, the User Segmentation Systems, where the models are used in order to group the users on the basis of their preferences, and the Fraud Detection Systems, where these models are exploited to determine the legitimacy of a financial transaction. Even though in literature diversity and similarity are considered as two sides of the same coin, almost all the approaches take into account them in a mutually exclusive manner, rather than jointly. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how the consideration of both sides of this coin is instead essential to overcome some well-known problems that affict the state-of-the-art approaches used to implement these services, improving their performance. Its contributions are the following: with regard to the recommender systems, the detection of the diversity in a user profile is used to discard incoherent items, improving the accuracy, while the exploitation of the similarity of the predicted items is used to re-rank the recommendations, improving their effectiveness; with regard to the user segmentation systems, the detection of the diversity overcomes the problem of the non-reliability of data source, while the exploitation of the similarity reduces the problems of understandability and triviality of the obtained segments; lastly, concerning the fraud detection systems, the joint use of both diversity and similarity in the evaluation of a new transaction overcomes the problems of the data scarcity, and those of the non-stationary and unbalanced class distribution

The Ambivalence of Science Fiction: Science Fiction, Neo-imperialism, and the Ideology of Modernity as Progress

This thesis sets out to examine the relationship between science fiction and its conditions of production, specifically interrogating the genre\u27s articulations of the ideology of modernity as progress. Sf has been characterized variously as a characteristically useful critical engagement with the ideologies of its context and as wholly ideological at the level of form, relying on the authority of a scientific episteme in its cognitive estrangements, while not obligated to operate within the boundaries of this episteme. As such, the genre is unparalleled in its capacity to articulate ideologies under the guise of a putatively neutral science and reason. However, this same formal action places the genre in the unique position of being able to utilize the authority of a scientific episteme to re-evaluate the putative neutrality of that very scientific episteme. As a result, this study concludes that while the genre\u27s reliance on the external authority of science in cognitively organizing its estrangements may make it particularly conducive to articulating ideological technoscience and the ideology of modernity as progress, the genre is characteristically ambivalent in this respect, both at the level of form and as a result of the incongruities between form and narrative. To support my thesis I engage a number of science fictional texts, focusing on Golden Age sf of the mid-20th century, while also branching out into explorations of a variety of 20th and 21st century sf texts, including texts from the pulp era, New Wave, cyberpunk, and post-singularity sf. I analyze within the effects of the conceptual mapping of society in terms of the natural sciences in sf, as well as the ambivalent presence of the robot as a megatextual motif, exploring the relationship of these to the ideology of modernity as progress and the post-scarcity fantasy of global mass consumption prosperity
