Student's experiment to fly on third Shuttle mission

    Get PDF
A spaceborne student experiment on insect motion during weightlessness scheduled to fly on the third flight of the space shuttle is described. The experiment will focus on the flight behavior in zero gravity of two species of flying insects with differing ratios of body mass to wing area, the velvetbean caterpillar moth and the honeybee drone. Ten insects of each species will be carried in separate canisters. The crew will remove the canisters from the storage locker and attach them to the mid-deck wall, where the insects will be observed and filmed by a data acquisition camera

The Steering committee is pleased to announce the 14th Annual GSU Student Research Conference to be held on May 21, 2008. This year we have launched the conference website: www.govst.edu/src. Please visit the website for information about the conference. For the past thirteen years this conference has become a tradition in excellence, and we are confident that today again we will witness another session of quality presentations by our students. This year we have record number of presentations - sixteen podium presentations and seventeen poster presentations from thirty nine students. The conference will be presented in its original format and with its original objectives: ^ 1. To provide students an opportunity to present their research work before an audience ^ of their peers, and to use the comments they receive to improve presentations made at professional conferences. 2. To provide a forum to highlight research accomplishments at GSU, and honor students presenting their research work. 3. To generate enthusiasm among the student body in general, and encourage them to pursue research and other scholarly activities. 4. To enhance communications in the area of research among the four colleges at GSU. The interactions may also lead to collaborative work among students and faculty of different colleges. 5. To enhance the image of GSU in the area of teaching, as research is considered an integral part of teaching at the university level. In the long run a larger number of students attracted to research would enroll at GSU to pursue higher education. The committee hopes that you will enjoy the conference, that you share in the excitement of doing research, and that you will look forward to participating in future student and professional conferences. |https://opus.govst.edu/student_research_conference/1013/thumbnail.jp

A comparative study of state educational *policies: Systemic models of equitable reform

Substantive attention to disproportionate gaps in achievement between minorities and non-minorities has led state educational agencies to institute responsive policy mandates. The implementation of equity and multicultural policies has resulted in the development of strategies and evaluative measures that assist in building capacity within educational environments to meet the needs of diverse groups of students. This comparative case study examines the ways in which two states have addressed issues of low educational attainment among ethnic and linguistic minority students by instituting equity policy mandates. The two state departments of education have reached out to stakeholders, developed action plans, and attempted to evaluate their own progress in infusing the tenets of multicultural education and principles of equity into educational contexts. This study concludes that state education agencies have taken extensive measures to ensure that policy mandates on multicultural education and equity are systemically implemented. Despite this, the two states continue to rely on local education agencies to evaluate their own progress in aligning organizational structures and pedagogical practices with the specifications set forth in the policy mandates under review. Considerable differences in academic performance and resistance to policy implementation have not persuaded this two states to conduct on-site district or school reviews using instruments specifically designed to measure the extent to which all students are provided equal access and opportunity

A QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATHLETIC SPENDING AND INSTITUTIONAL ENROLLMENT MEASURES IN FCS ATHLETIC INSTITUTIONS

As university budgets face fiscal challenges, it is important that university leaders make smart fiduciary choices. University leaders are quick to argue that athletics act as a front porch for universities, are a fundamental part of collegiate life, and that increased athletic funding will lead to enrollment increases and higher quality applicant pools. Critics of athletic spending, on the other hand, argue that money spent on college sports could be spent in other areas of the university. Using a regression analysis similar to previous research, the purpose of this panel data regression analysis was to examine the relationship between intercollegiate athletics and college enrollment at FCS schools during the period between 2003 and 2015. Specifically, the researcher sought to examine whether institutional athletics expenditures had an impact on the total enrollments, number of applications, or quality of applicants at each of the universities within the Southland Conference. The results of this study showed virtually no relationships between athletic spending and any of the dependent variables under study. Instead, the findings of this research suggested that at the FCS level, institutional spending on athletics did not statistically significantly impact university enrollment, application or student quality measures
