Mindlessly Following Partly Mindless Leaders the Case of RFID Implementations

    Get PDF
This paper studies drivers for RFID (Radio Fre quency IDentification) adoption. The mindlessne ss/mindfulness theory is applied to the context of RFID implementation decisions. Several type s of mindless and mindful decision making dri vers are put forward. Hypotheses are tested usi ng a questionnaire that was answered by 122 Chinese companies. The data shows mixed sup port for the applicability of the mindlessness/mi -ndfulness theory. Companies which notice othe r companies adopt RFID technology are motiva ted to adopt the technology as well. Late RFID implementers seem to take decisions more mi ndlessly than early RFID implementers. Still, ea rly RFID implementers also take decisions min dlessly. Neither late implementers nor early imp lementers can be qualified as being fully mindl ess: both groups also take decisions mindfully

Using IT Mindfulness to Mitigate the Negative Consequences of Technostress

    Get PDF
Research in the IS field has been focusing on investigating the adverse effects of ICT usage such as technostress. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated mechanisms for the alleviation of this phenomenon. This study contributes to the technostress literature by adopting a mindfulness perspective that has not been investigated before. In this paper, we aim to explore the role of IT mindfulness as a buffer to technostress stressors as well as a mechanism that can mitigate the negative consequences arising from extended ICT usage within organizational settings. By following a survey based approach and exploring a sample of 440 working individuals, our SEM analysis revealed that IT mindfulness constitutes a potential further mechanism that can effectively reduce technostress conditions, enhance user satisfaction while utilizing ICT’s for work tasks and improve task performance. Further research is proposed into expanding the proposed model, exploring the influence of IT mindfulness on additional organizational outcomes. Keywords IT Mindfulness, Technostress, stressors, ICT, organization

How Can Business Analytics Induce Creativity: The Performance Effects of User Interaction with Business Analytics

    Get PDF
Most organizations today use business analytics systems mainly for efficiency; reducing cost by contacting the right customer, generating revenue by reducing churn, etc. Nevertheless, business analytics holds promise in generating insights and in making users more creative in their decision making process. Analytics technology is becoming sophisticated with very advanced technical capabilities. However, behavioral aspects (i.e. user interaction) of using business analytics software have not reached the same level of sophistication. Very little research in this field discusses how to implement analytical systems and what outcomes will it produce. We are looking at conditions that can enhance user interaction with business analytics systems leading to certain performance outcomes. We propose that the fit between users’ cognitive style (intuitive vs. rational), business analytics model representations (decision tree vs. clustering), and task type (convergent vs. divergent) can lead to efficiency but can have adverse effects on creativity because that might lead to mindlessness in the decision making process

Safety mindfulness: the incorporation of low-dose mindfulness as a leading edge safety intervention

With nearly 2.9 million work related injuries in the United States each year and nearly 5,000 work related deaths, opportunities exist to build on existing safety management interventions to improve workplace safety. In addition to the impact on worker’s lives related to workplace safety accidents, workplace related injuries and deaths account for nearly $200 billion in direct costs to U.S. organizations. Current research in the application of workplace mindfulness offers the potential for a leading edge intervention that can lead to increased attention and situational awareness, which could greatly enhance workplace safety. The current study explored the relationship that low-dose mindfulness practice has on workplace safety. Included in the current study was an examination of current and historical interventions for managing safety as well as a review of mindfulness research, with an emphasis on workplace mindfulness, and finally a review of the limited research that has begun to explore the relationship between mindfulness and workplace safety. A case study was conducted with a lab in a large bio-tech company in Southern California. 16 participants engaged in daily mindfulness training for six weeks. After the six-week trial, participants were interviewed, results were analyzed and organized into results, theoretical implications, and practical implications. The case study concluded with summarizing key themes, surfacing limitations of the study and recommendations for further study were identified. The findings of this study suggest there are great opportunities for low-dose mindfulness to positively impact workplace safety, potentially saving individuals from harm and organizations from costly accidents

Role of Agile Mindfulness in Wellbeing of Agile Team Members

    Get PDF
Today, agile approach is arguably the most-widely-used project management method in software development industry. The dynamic nature of agile methods however is putting an overwhelming pressure on agile team members which in turn might negatively influence their overall agile wellbeing. Drawing on IT mindfulness as a theoretical foundation, this research-in-progress develops a conceptual model to examine the potential impact of agile mindfulness, in conjunction with agile identity, on the agile wellbeing of individuals in information system development projects. The findings of this research, upon completion, will contribute to IS literature by providing an evidencebased theoretical understanding of the relationship between agile mindfulness, agile identity, and agile wellbeing. The findings could also help agile teams to understand what improves agile wellbeing of team members, and in turn help them maintain, promote, and enhance it

Mindful Use as a Link Between Social Capital and Organizational Learning: An Empirical Test of the Antecedents and Consequences of Two New Constructs

    Get PDF
The motivation for this research is that information systems are not often used to their full potential - individuals often fail to use valuable features of systems not allowing firms to maximize their return from investments in these technologies. Additionally, there have been recent calls for new conceptualizations of system use and for research that examines post-adoption use. Therefore, the current research develops two new conceptualizations of system use: full appropriation and heedful use. These new concepts can help address under-utilization issues and fill gaps in the current literature. Full appropriation is fully exploiting applicable features of a system and heedful use is interacting with a system in a way that considers the needs of others within an organization. These conceptualizations are developed from psychological theories on mindfulness which have not been used to study system use. It is expected that a mindful approach to technology can lead to many positive benefits in the workplace. The first step in the current research was to develop and validate measures for these two new forms of use. Then the predictors of full appropriation and heedful use were examined with a social capital lens. The final step of this research was to examine the influence that these broader forms of use have on organizational learning since it has been suggested that organizational learning is the missing link between IT and firm performance. Data from 591 subjects from two separate organizations provided evidence of construct validity of the two newly developed scales and provided support for the overall model indicating a relationship between social capital and mindful use and a relationship between mindful use and organizational learning

An Investigation of the Managerial Use of Mobile Business Intelligence

    Get PDF
As a new trend in business intelligence (BI), mobile BI has been gaining increasing adoption by managers. However, there is little academic research about the managerial use of mobile BI. Adopting the key constructs of Task-Technology Fit theory and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology as the theoretical lens, this exploratory study aims to deliver a preliminary understanding on why and how managers use mobile BI, from both the managers’ and the vendor’s perspectives. A case study was conducted with a large government authority whose mobile BI vendor is an industry leader worldwide. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with seven senior managers from this organization and the vendor. Through discussing the reasons why managers use mobile BI and their use patterns, a series of emergent propositions are drawn. The empirical results from this study not only contribute to this currently underexplored area of mobile BI, but also help enable the industry to make mobile BI products that better suit managers’ needs.
