    Conflict Resolution Through Knowledge: The Library Perspective

    In every human interaction either at the level of individuals, organizations, national, regional or international, there are usually competitive interests and varying perspectives to every issue at stake. It is dogged pursuance of antagonistic, incompatible and antithetical goals that inevitably result in conflict. The phenomenon is multi-faceted and widespread in society, having destructive tendencies if consensus is not achieved. Obachi (2008) contended that forging diverse relationships and attempts at continuously perfecting same have the propensity to always precipitate conflict. Conflict resolution is the process of defusing antagonism and reaching agreement bet ween conflicting parties especially through some form of negotiation. It can also be conceptualized as a study and practice of solving interpersonal, intergroup and inter-national, conflicts. lfidon and Ahiazu (2005) noted that the potential for conflict is an everyday occurrence which exists virtually everywhere. According to them. interpersonal conflict is caused by personality clashes and failure to communicate effectively as well as distrust between parties with differing perspectives

With a focus on discoverability, representatives from the library, vendor, and publisher sectors describe their perspectives on cross-sector collaborations and opportunities with a common aim of proactively continuing to refine/improve the researcher experience.     Although a relatively recent phenomenon, measuring the usage of published research has rapidly become one of the most important ways to evaluate the relative value of different publications. Libraries and publishers are also investigating the impact of interface and technology provision in improving resource discovery and content usage. Demand for such data is increasing throughout the industry, partly in response to greater scrutiny of return on investment. As a result the techniques used by publishers and librarians to promote and evaluate usage are also developing.     CODATA and ERPANET collaborated to convene an international archiving workshop on the selection, appraisal, and retention of digital scientific data, which was held on 15-17 December 2003 at the Biblioteca Nacional in Lisbon, Portugal. The workshop brought together more than 65 researchers, data and information managers, archivists, and librarians from 13 countries to discuss the issues involved in making critical decisions regarding the long-term preservation of the scientific record. One of the major aims for this workshop was to provide an international forum to exchange information about data archiving policies and practices across different scientific, institutional, and national contexts.
