The purpose of the study was to ascertain the influence of Facebook and Instagram social networking sites usage on Computer Science students’ academic achievement in tertiary institutions in South East Zone, Nigeria. Two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. Correlational research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of (859) eight hundred and fifty nine of 2019/2020 academic session in the five federal universities in South East Zone while (615) six hundred and fifteen third year Computer Science students were using the social networking sites under study. The sample size of 242 respondents was selected using Taro Yamane formula among the social networking sites users and 19%, 21%, 19%, 20% and 22% of respondents were selected proportionately using simple stratified random sampling technique among the social networking sites users from five federal universities in South East Zone. Structured questionnaire and Computer Science Achievement score from the Computer Science Department of the Federal Universities in South East Zone were used for data collection. Computer Science Achievement score from the Computer Science Department of the Federal Universities were not subjected to any other validation and reliability assessment exercise because it is an official valid document domiciled in the Departments and Exams and Records of the federal universities under study. The questionnaire was validated by three lecturers and the internal consistency of the (questionnaire) instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha coefficient method which yielded an overall reliability estimate of 0.79. Research questions were analyzed using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) and coefficient of determination (r2) while the hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance using Simple Linear Regression procedures. The result of the study found out that the usage of Facebook and Instagram social networking sites all recorded positive predictive influence on Computer Science students’ academic achievement. It also revealed that the usage of Facebook does not significantly influence Computer Science students’ academic achievement while Instagram significantly influence Computer Science students’ academic achievement. It was recommended among others that Teachers can adopt new strategies by channeling assignments or discussions on social networking sites like Instagram to help inculcate the habit of using these sites for academic work.Students should be encouraged to utilize social networking sites like Instagram in a manner that will promote their academic achievement positively. They should be encouraged to create educational groups and see how to use that to enhance their academic growth and worth. In this case study, we aim to explore the characteristics and the reception of files uploaded to Zenodo, and the role the repository plays itself in generating usage. To this end, we first apply descriptive statistics on Zenodo’s full set of data record metadata with digital object identifiers (DOIs) until and including January 2017 (n = 141,777 records). Second, we estimate the coverage of Zenodo datasets in the Data Citation Index as well as of Zenodo journal articles in the Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Zenodo books and book chapters in the Book Citation Index, and Zenodo conference papers in the Proceedings Citation Index, and analyze their citedness according to the different data record types in Zenodo (e.g., journal article, dataset, book, or conference paper). Third, we provide a bibliometric anal- ysis of Zenodo records by using different metrics for citedness, including citation, usage, and altmetrics. Altmetrics data are gathered from two of the most popular tools for altmetric analyses, PlumX and Altmetric.com, and we compare the results. Moreover, we study how open access and DOIs provided by Zenodo influence the impact of Zenodo data records and we find a tendency toward a positive relationship between permissive access rights and altmetrics in certain data records

The Puck Stops Here: Evolving Social Norms of Helmet Usage in the National Hockey League

    Get PDF
Since the mid 1960s, the use of safety helmets in the National Hockey League (NHL) went from virtually nil to almost universal adoption. Despite horrific injuries sustained by players early in the history of the sport, widespread helmet adoption did not take place immediately. Using the NHL as an example, this paper examines the process of emerging norms in a social group, considering peer influence and exogenous policy impacts. The historical circumstances surrounding the NHL helmet usage policy changes are presented, along with a brief survey of the social science modeling of cultural norms. The study presents a peer-influence model in which players helmet usage decisions are influenced by their immediate social network and an exogenous mandate requiring helmet usage for new players. Model results are compared to actual NHL helmet usage trends based on data extracted by review of NHL game footage. The results show eventual dominance of helmet usage, but without the wide fluctuations in the actual historical adoption trends. The study is of interest to policy makers comparing interventionist strategies versus social network based approaches for influencing cultural norms of behavior

The usage of herbal products has gained popularity in the modern society and is often used as an alternative medicine. The increased popularity of herbal is caused by the change in lifestyle due to modernization process and health problems. Even though there is an increased demand for herbal products, however, studies on actual purchase of herbal-based products are still insufficient, particularly in Malaysian context. Hence, this research is to identify factors that influence the actual purchase of herbal-based products. In order to achive the objective, a conceptual model based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour was proposed to explain the relationships between variable in this reseach. A total of 576 questionnaires were distributed in six states using Mall Intercept, however only 473 usable responses were obtained and used for data analysis. Data in this study was analyzed through a combination of descriptive and inferential statistics using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and SmartPLS. The results reveal that 15 hypotheses are significant that support the finding. As expected, attitudes, purchase intention, product safety, and social influence are significantly related to the purchase intention and actual purchase, while perceived benefits moderate the relationship between attitudes and actual purchase. The results also show that intention mediates the relationship between attitude, social influence, product safety and actual purchase. Finally, this research also discusses the contributions, limitations and suggestions for future research related to the actual purchase of herbal-based products
