    Communicating Personal Health Information in Virtual Health Communities: An Integration of Privacy Calculus Model and Affective Commitment

    Health consumers such as patients and caregivers often join virtual health communities (VHCs) to seek and provide health-related information and emotional support. To do so, they converse with other individuals in platforms such as public discussion boards and blogs. During these online conversations, people may communicate their personal health information (PHI) to others. A potential driver for this form of revealing PHI is the immediate positive outcomes that it can provide for contributors and the community. PHI disclosure, however, can entail privacy risks and concerns for community members, which may ultimately hamper their participation in those communities. Moreover, one’s emotional attachment to a VHC (namely, affective commitment) may influence one’s PHI sharing behaviors in that community. Thus, to understand how various factors impact communicating PHI in public VHC discussions, we drew on the privacy calculus model and the notion of affective commitment, developed a theoretical model, and empirically tested the model. To do so, we administered a survey to individuals from three different populations including students, faculty, and staff at a large university and visitors to clinics. We performed a set of hierarchical moderated multiple regressions on the dataset. The results revealed that privacy concerns along with expected personal and community-related outcomes of communicating PHI affected willingness to communicate PHI in public VHC discussions. The results, however, refuted the hypothesized direct and moderating effects of affective commitment on willingness to share PHI in these virtual platforms. The framework emphasises the interplay between physical infrastructure (including hard technologies and their location in the community), soft technologies (including capacity building, education, training and awareness raising), social infrastructure (including local networks and community organisations) and social capital (including trust and reciprocity, strong sense of community, shared vision, and outcomes from participation in local and external networks)

    Assessing national values to protect the health of the Great Barrier Reef

    The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is a vast iconic environmental asset covering an area of approximately 35 million hectares. It is valued by people all over Australia, as well as overseas. Non-market values for the GBR will comprise both use and non-use values. The values of people who live closer to the GBR and who can visit it more frequently are likely to be higher than those who live further away. The aim of this study was to estimate the values to protect the health of the GBR at the national level and to examine the effects of distance decay on valuation estimates. A split-sample choice-modelling experiment was conducted in six locations: a regional town within the GBR catchment area (Townsville); Brisbane, the state capital approximately 450 km from the southern limit of the GBR; and four other capital cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth) ranging from 730 km to over 3600 km from Brisbane. The results indicate that the total national value for a 1 per cent improvement in the health of the GBR ranges from between a low of approximately 433.6milliontoahighof433.6 million to a high of 811.3 million, depending on the underlying assumptions made. There was some evidence of distance decay in values. Most decline occurred once outside the home state, and little further decline once away from the east coast. There was no evidence to suggest any difference in patterns of use and non-use values.     ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks.     Innovations in the Digital Economy: Promotion of R&D and Growth in Open Economies

    This paper presents key figures on innovativeness and export dynamics in selected OECD countries and develops some new ideas on optimum R&D policies in open economies. We take a look at some selected indicators of technological and economic competitiveness in the field of RCAs and export unit values with a special focus on the US, France, Italy, Germany and the UK on the one hand and Hungary as an accession country on the other. Specialization patterns differ across countries; as do weighted export unit values. The US has been very successful in the 1990s in several key sectors which have improved both RCAs and export unit values. France has made progress in some high technology fields, Italy also stands for considerable successful structural adjustment. Germany's dynamics has been very strong in the automotive sector and in the field of precision instruments; however, Hungary and the UK also have a positive development in the automotive sector which could signal problems for Germany's exports in the lower segment of the market. As regards welfare effects of R&D support in particular, interesting cases concern technology-intensive intermediate tradables and network effects. We also emphasize the macroeconomic effects of government R&D subsidies for promoting product innovations and process innovations. It would be useful to have an EU (or OECD) tax revenue sharing system which would particularly compensate producers of intermediate innovative tradables. In a more general policy perspective, one may argue that the government should subsidize those technologyintensive fields in which the respective country has a comparative advantage or enjoys sustained increases in (weighted) export unit values. The new Schumpeter-Mundell-Fleming model presented clearly points to the benefits of an expansionary fiscal policy which would stimulate product innovations, with output and employment being higher. By contrast, there is an ambiguous result in the case of stimulating process innovations by way of expansionary supply-oriented (R&D promoting) fiscal policy. Knowledge transfer from universities to the business community would be stimulated by privatization of a considerable share of stateowned universities and the introduction of incentives for professors to create technologyintensive firms on or off campus. Knowledge and skills can be kept in the region only if the overall mix of policies creates positive growth prospects or if the country has specialized in immobile Schumpeter industries.Digital economy, product and process innovation, R&D policies
