Orthogonal learning particle swarm optimization
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) relies on its
learning strategy to guide its search direction. Traditionally,
each particle utilizes its historical best experience and its neighborhood’s
best experience through linear summation. Such a
learning strategy is easy to use, but is inefficient when searching
in complex problem spaces. Hence, designing learning strategies
that can utilize previous search information (experience) more
efficiently has become one of the most salient and active PSO
research topics. In this paper, we proposes an orthogonal learning
(OL) strategy for PSO to discover more useful information that
lies in the above two experiences via orthogonal experimental
design. We name this PSO as orthogonal learning particle swarm
optimization (OLPSO). The OL strategy can guide particles to
fly in better directions by constructing a much promising and
efficient exemplar. The OL strategy can be applied to PSO with
any topological structure. In this paper, it is applied to both global
and local versions of PSO, yielding the OLPSO-G and OLPSOL
algorithms, respectively. This new learning strategy and the
new algorithms are tested on a set of 16 benchmark functions, and
are compared with other PSO algorithms and some state of the
art evolutionary algorithms. The experimental results illustrate
the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed learning strategy
and algorithms. The comparisons show that OLPSO significantly
improves the performance of PSO, offering faster global convergence,
higher solution quality, and stronger robustness
Electromagnetic Device Optimization with Stochastic Methods
none1Device optimization using metaheuristic methods has been successfully applied to
electromagnetic devices since their development in the early 1980s. Some recent examples of
the application of metaheuristics in electromagnetic device design include, among others,
genetic algorithms [Zaoui2007], evolution strategies [Coelho2007], Tabu search
[Cogotti2000], artificial immune systems [Campelo2006], particle swarm optimization (PSO)
[Ciuprina2002].
In this chapter the author summarizes some of his experiences in the use of two stochastic
optimization techniques which are very suitable to typical electromagnetic devices and
systems. First the algorithms are briefly introduced and then their application to typical
challenging problems, including Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC), high-
field-uniformity solenoids and Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) systems,
is presented.noneP. AlottoAlotto, Piergiorgi
Particle swarm optimization with composite particles in dynamic environments
This article is placed here with the permission of IEEE - Copyright @ 2010 IEEEIn recent years, there has been a growing interest in the study of particle swarm optimization (PSO) in dynamic environments. This paper presents a new PSO model, called PSO with composite particles (PSO-CP), to address dynamic optimization problems. PSO-CP partitions the swarm into a set of composite particles based on their similarity using a "worst first" principle. Inspired by the composite particle phenomenon in physics, the elementary members in each composite particle interact via a velocity-anisotropic reflection scheme to integrate valuable information for effectively and rapidly finding the promising optima in the search space. Each composite particle maintains the diversity by a scattering operator. In addition, an integral movement strategy is introduced to promote the swarm diversity. Experiments on a typical dynamic test benchmark problem provide a guideline for setting the involved parameters and show that PSO-CP is efficient in comparison with several state-of-the-art PSO algorithms for dynamic optimization problems. This work was supported in part by the Key Program of the National Natural Science Foundation (NNSF) of China under Grant 70931001 and 70771021, the Science Fund for Creative Research Group of the NNSF of China under Grant 60821063 and 70721001, the Ph.D. Programs Foundation of the Ministry of education of China under Grant 200801450008, and by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of U.K. under Grant EP/E060722/1
A convergence and diversity guided leader selection strategy for many-objective particle swarm optimization
Recently, particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is extended to solve many-objective optimization problems (MaOPs) and becomes a hot research topic in the field of evolutionary computation. Particularly, the leader particle selection (LPS) and the search direction used in a velocity update strategy are two crucial factors in PSOs. However, the LPS strategies for most existing PSOs are not so efficient in high-dimensional objective space, mainly due to the lack of convergence pressure or loss of diversity. In order to address these two issues and improve the performance of PSO in high-dimensional objective space, this paper proposes a convergence and diversity guided leader selection strategy for PSO, denoted as CDLS, in which different leader particles are adaptively selected for each particle based on its corresponding situation of convergence and diversity. In this way, a good tradeoff between the convergence and diversity can be achieved by CDLS. To verify the effectiveness of CDLS, it is embedded into the PSO search process of three well-known PSOs. Furthermore, a new variant of PSO combining with the CDLS strategy, namely PSO/CDLS, is also presented. The experimental results validate the superiority of our proposed CDLS strategy and the effectiveness of PSO/CDLS, when solving numerous MaOPs with regular and irregular Pareto fronts (PFs)

An Evaluation of Performance Enhancements to Particle Swarm Optimisation on Real-World Data
Swarm Computation is a relatively new optimisation paradigm. The basic premise is to model the collective behaviour of self-organised natural phenomena such as swarms, flocks and shoals, in order to solve optimisation problems. Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) is a type of swarm computation inspired by bird flocks or swarms of bees by modelling their collective social influence as they search for optimal solutions.
In many real-world applications of PSO, the algorithm is used as a data pre-processor for a neural network or similar post processing system, and is often extensively modified to suit the application. The thesis introduces techniques that allow unmodified PSO to be applied successfully to a range of problems, specifically three extensions to the basic PSO algorithm: solving optimisation problems by training a hyperspatial matrix, using a hierarchy of swarms to coordinate optimisation on several data sets simultaneously, and dynamic neighbourhood selection in swarms.
Rather than working directly with candidate solutions to an optimisation problem, the PSO algorithm is adapted to train a matrix of weights, to produce a solution to the problem from the inputs. The search space is abstracted from the problem data.
A single PSO swarm optimises a single data set and has difficulties where the data set comprises disjoint parts (such as time series data for different days). To address this problem, we introduce a hierarchy of swarms, where each child swarm optimises one section of the data set whose gbest particle is a member of the swarm above in the hierarchy. The parent swarm(s) coordinate their children and encourage more exploration of the solution space. We show that hierarchical swarms of this type perform better than single swarm PSO optimisers on the disjoint data sets used.
PSO relies on interaction between particles within a neighbourhood to find good solutions. In many PSO variants, possible interactions are arbitrary and fixed on initialisation. Our third contribution is a dynamic neighbourhood selection: particles can modify their neighbourhood, based on the success of the candidate neighbour particle. As PSO is intended to reflect the social interaction of agents, this change significantly increases the ability of the swarm to find optimal solutions. Applied to real-world medical and cosmological data, this modification is and shows improvements over standard PSO approaches with fixed neighbourhoods
