    Social capital and Growth in Brazilian Municipalities

    According to the modern theory of social capital (see Coleman (1990), Putnam (1993), Fukuyama (1995)), widespread trust would influence the economic performances of a country through a) reduction of transactional costs (monitoring and preventive activities to protect themselves from being exploited in economic transactions) and legal disputes; b) higher percentage of time devoted to innovation in new products or processes; c) higher reliability of formal institutions like the government and the central bank which implies that people can adopt more appropriate horizons in making investment decisions and choose production technologies that are optimal over the long, rather than short, run; d) a stronger social cohesion due to the sharing of ethical norms which induces cooperative behaviours and organisational innovations. On the basis of these theories a large number of empirical contributions which confirm the existence of a positive relation between growth, efficiency and the level of trust has been produced. Following the seminal work by Knack et al. (ibidem), we try to explain growth in Brazil over the period 2000-2003 using indicators of social capital. We develop our analysis at the most detailed geographical level, considering all 5507 municipalities. This choice is motivated by the great heterogeneity inside every country in terms of growth rate. While we observe homogeneity in some countries, like Sergipe, in other countries, like Sao Paulo, we have huge differences. This forces us to consider the municipalities as unit of observation; otherwise the country level would force us to loose all the heterogeneity. In order to obtain good measures of social capital, we start from a set of objective measure, and then analyse then with factor component analysis. We find a robust evidence of the positive effect of social capital on growth rates of income per capita.DYNREG15

    The Co-Evolution of Trust and Coordination in Global Software Development Teams-An Extensible Evolutionary Game Theory Model

    Trust is important for effective coordination in global software development teams. However, the co-evolution of trust and coordination is often neglected. To fill the gap, we develop an evolutionary game theory model. Using the Behavior-Preference-Constraint (BPC) model and Adaptive Play, the model challenges the traditional view of trust as a static “resource” for coordination and proposes an alternative view that trust dynamically restricts people’s action choices in interacting with other team members. Through analyzing the model, we describe how trust and coordination co-evolve in the progress of interactions among team members. We propose three propositions summarizing the long-term characteristics of coordination and trust in the process. For example, the co-existence of low trust and high trust can be a stable state in the long run, which explains why low trust can always exist even when all team members strictly prefer effective coordination

    Individual Differences and Contribution Sequences in Threshold Public Goods

    Following the notion that organizations often face public good dilemmas when collective action is needed, we use a real-time provision-point mechanism to experimentally explore the process of achieving cooperative equilibria. Specifically, besides exploring group outcomes, we identify individual antecedents for the timing of the contribution to the public good. In addition, we study the role of different situational factors for sustaining high rates of cooperation: information about others' actions and the number of individuals necessary for public good provision. We find that contribution and implementation rates are relatively high, with only a moderate decline over time, and that social value orientation as well as several personality traits help to explain the observed contribution sequences

    On the road to carbon reduction in a food supply network: a complex adaptive systems perspective

    Purpose: In acknowledging the reality of climate change, large firms have set internal and external (supplier oriented) targets to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study explores the complex processes behind the evolution and diffusion of carbon reduction strategies in supply networks. Design/methodology/approach: The research uses complex adaptive systems (CAS) as a theoretical framework and presents a single case study of a focal buying firm and its supply network in the food sector. A longitudinal and multilevel analysis is used to discuss the dynamics between the focal firm, the supply network and external environment. Findings: Rather than being a linear and controlled process of adoption-implementation-outcomes, the transition to reduce carbon in a supply network is much more dynamic, emerging as a result of a number of factors at the individual, organizational, supply network and environmental levels. Research limitations/implications: The research considers the emergence of a carbon reduction strategy in the food sector, driven by a dominant buying firm. Future research should seek to investigate the diffusion of environmental strategies more broadly and in other contexts. Practical implications: Findings from the research reveal the limits of the control that a buying firm can exert over behaviours in its network and show the positive influence of consortia initiatives on transitioning to sustainability in supply networks. Originality: CAS is a fairly novel theoretical lens for researching environmental supply network dynamics. The paper offers fresh multilevel insights into the emergent and systemic nature of the diffusion of environmental practices in supply networks

    Group culture, workplace diversity and organizational innovativeness: Evidence from Serbia

    We examine the relationship between group culture – which emphasizes mentoring, teamwork and loyalty – and innovativeness in organizations. The relationship between group culture and innovativeness is assumed to be positive; group culture fosters trust and knowledge sharing which is conducive to joint creativity and collaboration necessary for the innovation process. Drawing on social categorization theory and key insights from gender studies, we develop a more nuanced argument that this positive relationship is bounded by gender diversity within the organization; organizations that are highly gender diverse will suffer from a ‘rejection of others’ barrier when high levels of group culture are imposed on employees. Analysis of survey data from 407 individuals working for organizations of different types and sizes in Serbia gives support to our main argument. We discuss implications of this for theory and management practice as well as policy implications for transition economies

    Is It Me or Her? How Gender Composition Evokes Interpersonally Sensitive Behavior on Collaborative Cross-Boundary Projects

    This paper investigates how professional workers’ willingness to act with interpersonal sensitivity is influenced by the gender and power of their interaction partners. We call into question the idea that mixed-gender interactions involve more interpersonal sensitivity than all-male interactions primarily because women demonstrate more interpersonal sensitivity than do men. Rather, we argue that the social category “women” can evoke more sensitive behavior from others such that men as well as women contribute to an increase in sensitivity in mixed-gender interactions. We further argue that the presence of women may trigger increased sensitivity such that men can also be the recipients of more sensitivity when one or more women are present on a team. In a study of 202 management consultants, we found that the willingness to act with interpersonal sensitivity increased in interactions with women. Moreover, this effect was greater in interactions with women who had low reward power—i.e., females who better fit the expectations associated with the social category “women.” We also found team-level effects. Professionals working with mixed-gender versus all-male client teams reported a greater willingness to act with interpersonally sensitive behavior toward male client team members. Our findings show that the willingness to act with interpersonal sensitivity is context dependent and shed light on the importance of studying interaction partner-level and team-level effects on willingness to act with interpersonal sensitivity

    The Adoption and Effectiveness of Automation in Health Evidence Synthesis

    Background: Health systems worldwide are often informed by evidence-based guidelines which in turn rely heavily on systematic reviews. Systematic reviews are currently hindered by the increasing volume of new research and by its variable quality. Automation has potential to alleviate this problem but is not widely used in health evidence synthesis. This thesis sought to address the following: why is automation adopted (or not), and what effects does it have when it is put into use? / Methods: Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations theory, as a well-established and widely used framework, informed the study design and analysis. Adoption barriers and facilitators were explored through a thematic analysis of guideline developers’ opinions towards automation, and by mapping the adoption journey of a machine learning (ML) tool among Cochrane Information Specialists (CISs). A randomised trial of ML assistance in Risk of Bias (RoB) assessments and a cost-effectiveness analysis of a semi-automated workflow in the maintenance of a living evidence map each evaluated the effects of automation in practice. / Results: Adoption decisions are most strongly informed by the professional cultural expectations of health evidence synthesis. The stringent expectations of systematic reviewers and their users must be met before any other characteristic of an automation technology is considered by potential adopters. Ease-of-use increases in importance as a tool becomes more diffused across a population. Results of the randomised trial showed that ML-assisted RoB assessments were non-inferior to assessments completed entirely by human researcher effort. The cost-effectiveness analysis showed that a semi-automated workflow identified more relevant studies than the manual workflow and was less costly. / Conclusions: Automation can have substantial benefits when integrated into health evidence workflows. Wider adoption of automation tools will be facilitated by ensuring they are aligned with professional values of the field and limited in technical complexity

    Exploring the Attitudes Toward Interprofessional Practice: Eastern North Carolina Perspectives

    Interprofessional health care delivery has the potential to greatly impact the experience, costs, and outcomes of health care. Primary care providers have the capacity to be the tipping point of this change. Primary care providers’ attitudes toward interprofessional care may bolster or impede implementation of the concept. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the attitudes toward interprofessional practice as self-reported by primary care providers in eastern North Carolina (NC). The Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS), a validated 21-item scale, was used to explore providers’ attitudes toward intentional team-based collaborative practice within a large health system in eastern NC. Providers included physicians, physicians’ assistants and nurse practitioners. Cronbach’s alpha for the 21-item scale was calculated at .877. A Kruskal-Wallis test was used to examine a between groups analysis of the mean scores, finding no significant difference between the mean scores of the three professional groups. The findings of the nonparametric, cross-observational, quantitative study are discussed in this report. Further exploration of the attitudes of larger numbers of primary care providers is indicated.D.N.P
