    Connectionless indoor inventory tracking in Zigbee RFID sensor network

    Abstract: Zigbee is one of the most exciting wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies for monitoring and control. In our previous research, an integrated Zigbee RFID sensor network was designed as an ‘all-in-one’ system solution for Humanitarian Logistics Center (HLC) resource management. Various field trials, which have justified the feasibility and features of such a system structure, have also revealed the requirement for simple yet reliable mobile tracking architecture for Zigbee network. In this paper a connectionless tracking architecture based on Zigbee RFID sensor network is proposed for inventory management applications. Such architecture features a consistent network structure, low hardware energy consumption and no accumulated error for localization algorithms with the least additional cost and hardware required on top of the existing Zigbee RFID sensor network systems. A simple demo system is also developed to demonstrate the feasibility of our design

    Emergencies in industrial warehouses are a major concern for fire-fighters. The large dimensions, together with the development of dense smoke that drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges. The GUARDIANS robot swarm is designed to assist fire-fighters in searching a large warehouse. In this paper we discuss the technology developed for a swarm of robots assisting fire-fighters. We explain the swarming algorithms that provide the functionality by which the robots react to and follow humans while no communication is required. Next we discuss the wireless communication system, which is a so-called mobile ad-hoc network. The communication network provides also the means to locate the robots and humans. Thus, the robot swarm is able to provide guidance information to the humans. Together with the fire-fighters we explored how the robot swarm should feed information back to the human fire-fighter. We have designed and experimented with interfaces for presenting swarm-based information to human beings

    Networking Solutions for Integrated Heterogeneous Wireless Ecosystem

    As wireless communications technology is steadily evolving to improve the offered connectivity levels, additional research on emerging network architectures is becoming timely to understand the applicability of both traditional and novel networking solutions. This chapter concentrates on the utilization of cloud computing techniques to construct feasible system prototypes and demonstrators within the rapidly maturing heterogeneous wireless ecosystem. Our first solution facilitates cooperative radio resource management in heterogeneous networks. The second solution enables assisted direct connectivity between proximate users. The contents of the chapter outline our corresponding research and development efforts as well as summarize the major experiences and lessons learned

    Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types in Dynamic Environments

    Over the years, mobile devices have become increasingly popular and gained improved computation capabilities allowing them to perform more complex tasks such as collaborative applications. Given the weak characteristic properties of mobile networks, which represent highly dynamic environments where users may experience regular involuntary disconnection periods, the big question arises of how to maintain data consistency. This issue is most pronounced in collaborative environments where multiple users interact with each other, sharing a replicated state that may diverge due to concurrency conflicts and loss of updates. To maintain consistency, one of today’s best solutions is Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs), which ensure low latency values and automatic conflict resolution, guaranteeing eventual consistency of the shared data. However, a limitation often found on CRDTs and the systems that employ them is the need for the knowledge of the replicas whom the state changes must be disseminated to. This constitutes a problem since it is inconceivable to maintain said knowledge in an environment where clients may leave and join at any given time and consequently get disconnected due to mobile network communications unreliability. In this thesis, we present the study and extension of the CRDT concept to dynamic environments by introducing the developed P/S-CRDTs model, where CRDTs are coupled with the publisher/subscriber interaction scheme and additional mechanisms to ensure users are able to cooperate and maintain consistency whilst accounting for the consequent volatile behaviors of mobile networks. The experimental results show that in volatile scenarios of disconnection, mobile users in collaborative activity maintain consistency among themselves and when compared to other available CRDT models, the P/S-CRDTs model is able to decouple the required knowledge of whom the updates must be disseminated to, while ensuring appropriate network traffic values

Overcoming regional economic hardship, long-tolerated racial inequity and subpar education infrastructure is almost impossible. But there is progress. This issue brief examines two key elements connecting southern young adults with rewarding employment opportunities: employer and youth engagement. The brief offers a framework to assess the preconditions for effectively engaging employers and young adults and identifies examples of promising efforts.
