DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DYSLEXIC STUDENTS AND CONTROLS MATCHED FOR EDUCATIONAL LEVEL IN WORD INTELLIGIBILITY AND TEXT COMPREHENSION PRESENTED VIA SYNTHETIC AND NATURAL SPEECH
This study investigated intelligibility and text comprehension for natural and synthetic speech held by a group of dyslexic students and their controls matched for educational level-school grade. Results have shown that both groups identified words and sentences better in natural speech. Dyslexic students however had shown worst performance in synthetic speech than controls. Overall, a significant difference has been observed between the two groups concerning their text comprehension in natural versus synthetic speech. Article visualizations
Generating Synthetic Pitch Contours Using Prosodic Structure.
This thesis addresses the problem of generating a range of natural sounding pitch
contours for speech synthesis to convey the specific meanings of different intonation
patterns.
Where other models can synthesise intonation adequately for short sentences,
longer sentences often sound unnatural as phrasing is only really considered at
the sentence level. We build models within a framework of prosodic structure
derived from the linguistic analysis of a corpus of speech. We show that the use
of appropriate prosodic structure allows us to produce better contours for longer
sentences and allows us to capture the original style of the corpus. The resulting
model is also sufficiently flexible to be adapted to suitable styles for use in other
domains.
To convey specific meanings we need to be able to generate different accent
types. We find that the infrequency of some accent and boundary types makes
them hard to model from the corpus alone. We address this issue by developing
a model which allows us to isolate the parameters which control specific accent
type shapes, so that we can reestimate these parameters based on other data

In this dissertation, the ITHACA framework is analyzed. It is a software
environment for building adaptable, multilingual, modular, sustainable, and
cheap Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) applications grounded
on: 1) the Design for All principles, 2) component-based development, and 3)
Open Source.
We study communication, language, and speech theories and the communication
needs of possible users, as well as their systematic categorization. The
software environment has been successfully applied by implementing a family of
AAC products, based on interchangeable components. Several ready to use
ITHACA-based components, including on-screen keyboards, Text-to-Speech, symbol
selection sets, e-chatting, and e-mailing components have been developed. This
demonstration showed good acceptance of the ITHACA applications and substantial
improvement of the end users’ communication skills. Developers’ experience on
working in ITHACA’s Open Source projects was also positively evaluated
