    Observer-based engine air charge characterisation: rapid, observer-assisted engine air charge characterisation using a dynamic dual-ramp testing method

    Characterisation of modern complex powertrains is a time consuming and expensive process. Little effort has been made to improve the efficiency of testing methodologies used to obtain data for this purpose. Steady-state engine testing is still regarded as the golden standard, where approximately 90% of testing time is wasted waiting for the engine to stabilize. Rapid dynamic engine testing, as a replacement for the conventional steady-state method, has the potential to significantly reduce the time required for characterisation. However, even by using state of the art measurement equipment, dynamic engine testing introduces the problem that certain variables are not directly measurable due to the excitation of the system dynamics. Consequently, it is necessary to develop methods that allow the observation of not directly measurable quantities during transient engine testing. Engine testing for the characterisation of the engine air-path is specifically affected by this problem since the air mass flow entering the cylinder is not directly measurable by any sensor during transient operation. This dissertation presents a comprehensive methodology for engine air charge characterisation using dynamic test data. An observer is developed, which allows observation of the actual air mass flow into the engine during transient operation. The observer is integrated into a dual-ramp testing procedure, which allows the elimination of unaccounted dynamic effects by averaging over the resulting hysteresis. A simulation study on a 1-D gas dynamic engine model investigates the accuracy of the developed methodology. The simulation results show a trade-off between time saving and accuracy. Experimental test result confirm a time saving of 95% compared to conventional steady-state testing and at least 65% compared to quasi steady-state testing while maintaining the accuracy and repeatability of conventional steady-state testing

    Decision-making for unmanned aerial vehicle operation in icing conditions

    With the increased use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for civil and commercial applications, there is a strong demand for new regulations and technology that will eventually permit for the integration of UAS in unsegregated airspace. This requires new technology to ensure sufficient safety and a smooth integration process. The absence of a pilot on board a vehicle introduces new problems that do not arise in manned flight. One challenging and safety-critical issue is flight in known icing conditions. Whereas in manned flight, dealing with icing is left to the pilot and his appraisal of the situation at hand; in unmanned flight, this is no longer an option and new solutions are required. To address this, an icing-related decision-making system (IRDMS) is proposed. The system quantifies in-flight icing based on changes in aircraft performance and measurements of environmental properties, and evaluates what the effects on the aircraft are. Based on this, it determines whether the aircraft can proceed, and whether and which available icing protection systems should be activated. In this way, advice on an appropriate response is given to the operator on the ground, to ensure safe continuation of the flight and avoid possible accidents

    Comprehensive design and propagation study of a compact dual band antenna for healthcare applications

    In this paper, a dual band planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) has been investigated for cooperative on- and off-body communications. Free space and on-body performance parameters like return loss, bandwidth, radiation pattern and efficiency of this antenna are shown and investigated. The on- and off-body radio propagation channel performance at 2.45 GHz and 1.9 GHz have been investigated, respectively. Experimental investigations are performed both in the anechoic chamber and in an indoor environment. The path loss exponent has been extracted for both on- and off-body radio propagation scenarios. For on-body propagation, the path loss exponent is 2.48 and 2.22 in the anechoic chamber and indoor environment, respectively. The path loss exponent is 1.27 for off-body radio propagation situation. For on-body case, the path loss has been characterized for ten different locations on the body at 2.45 GHz, whereas for off-body case radio channel studies are performed for five different locations at 1.9 GHz. The proposed antenna shows a good on- and off-body radio channel performance

    A novel indicator for kinematic hardening effect quantification in deep drawing simulation

    Deep drawing simulation techniques reduce tool design costs and improve tool performance and reliability. In terms of strain hardening, mixed models capturing the kinematic effect are sometimes more accurate than isotropic models. Indeed, nonlinearity in strain paths can lead to inconsistent simulation results. However, the use of such models requires a greater number of tests including strain path changes. Therefore, the use of such mixed models shall be required only if the simulation includes non-linear strain paths and the material exhibits a pronounced Bauschinger effect. New tools to help engineers choose between models could ease the spread of more advanced models in simulation of deep drawing processes when needed. With this in mind, an indicator predicting the influence of kinematic effects could help to select an adequate model. In this study, a new indicator is introduced with the idea of characterising strain path non-linearity in order to assess kinematic hardening influence. The indicator is computed using the forming history taken from a purely isotropic simulation – which is easier to set up and parametrise. The ability of the indicator to predict inconsistencies within the isotropic simulation is investigated using U-channel simulations

    For a car manufacturer, reducing the weight of vehicles is an obvious aim. Replacing steel by aluminium moves towards that goal. Unfortunately, aluminium's stamping numerical simulation results are not yet as reliable as those of steel. Punch-strength and spring-back phenomena are not correctly described. This study on aluminium validates the behaviour law Hill 48 quadratic yield criterion with both isotropic and kinematic hardening. It is based on the yield surface and on associated experimental tests (uniaxial test, plane tensile test, plane compression and tensile shearing)

    Sistem Latihan Dual Nasional (SLDN) merupakan satu sistem latihan dan usahasama antara sektor awam dan sektor swasta dilaksanakan untuk melahirkan tenaga mahir k-worker selari dengan keperluan industri masa kini untuk membangunkan ekonomi negara. Pihak kerajaan dan syarikat swasta menaja pekerja pilihan mereka sebagai pelatih dalam sistem latihan ini bagi mempertingkatkan kebolehan pekerja mereka. Selain itu, pelatih juga terdiri daripada pelajar yang tidak dapat melanjutkan pelajaran ke mana-mana institusi pengajian tinggi awam mahupun swasta. Sistem ini menjalankan pendekatan day release iaitu pelatih menjalani latihan selama empat hari di industri dan satu hari di institusi latihan atau block release iaitu pelatih menjalani latihan kemahiran di industri empat bulan dan satu bulan di institusi latihan mengikut kesesuaian industri tersebut. Kajian berbentuk deskriptif dijalankan untuk melihat melihat tahap kompetensi pembimbing SLDN. Selain itu juga, kajian ini dijalankan bagi melihat perbezaan terhadap tahap pengetahuan, kemahiran dan sikap pembimbing SLDN berdasarkan jantina. Kajian ini juga dibuat bagi menentukan hubungan kompetensi pembimbing berdasarkan pengalaman bekerja. Penyelidikan tinjauan deskriptif ini menggunakan borang soal selidik sebagai instrumen kajian berskala Likert. Seramai 84 orang responden yang terdiri daripada pembimbing syarikat bertauliah SLDN terlibat di dalam kajian ini. Data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS versi 16.0. Hasil analisis mendapati pembimbing mempunyai pengetahuan yang tinggi di samping kemahiran dan sikap. Keputusan inferensi pula menunjukkan tidak terdapat perbezaan antara tahap pengetahuan, kemahiran dan sikap pembimbing berdasarkan jantina manakala analisis korelasi Pearson menunjukkan tidak terdapat hubungan antara kompetensi pembimbing berdasarkan pengalaman bekerja

    Studying the thermal conductivity of a deep Eocene clay formation: direct measurements vs back-analysis results

    An experimental study on Ypresian clays–one of the potential deep and sedimentary clay formations in Belgium for the geological disposal of heat-emitting radioactive waste–has been undertaken to systematically study its thermal conductivity using different experimental techniques. As a first step, a new experimental setup with heat flux measurement has been used and careful pre-conditioning protocols have been followed to directly measure this thermal property. The aim of these pre-conditioning tests has been ensuring a very high degree of saturation and the closure of fissures / gaps along bedding planes before the thermal tests are run under low stress conditions. Thermal tests have shown to be particularly sensitive when the thermal conductivity is determined along a direction orthogonal to these bedding planes. The study is then complemented by using a constant volume heating cell, in which heating pulse tests have been carried out under fully saturated conditions that have been ensured with a high water back-pressure. Numerical models have been used to interpret this pulse test, to exploit all the information provided by temperature measurements and to back-analyse the thermal conductivity. Direct thermal conductivity data with the improved pre-conditioning protocol allowed obtaining results consistent with the values reported when using back-analysis in the constant volume cell. The article discusses the importance of restoring full saturation conditions, particularly on retrieval of deep sedimentary clays, which may undergo opening of fissures along bedding planes that may affect the correct determination of the thermal conductivity.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
