Once More, With Feeling: Partnering With Learners to Re-see the College Experience Through Metaphor and Sensory Language
This study focuses on better understanding students and their internal worlds through conceptual metaphor theory and sensory language. Using a phenomenological and arts-based approach, I examined students’ metaphorical constructions of their college experiences and the sensory language and information informing those constructions. By engaging participants in a multimodal process to re-see their experience through connoisseurship and criticism, I explored the following research questions: How do students metaphorically structure their college experience? What sensory language do college students use to describe the metaphorical dimensions of their college experience? How does sensory information shape the metaphorical structuring of their college experience? Through conversations centered on participant-generated images and chosen sensory language, I identified five complex metaphors that represented participants’ constructions of their college experience: college is an unwieldy package; college is up, forward, and out; college is current and future nostalgia; college is a prism; and college is a movie and peers are the soundtrack. By considering these themes, it may be possible for educators to better partner with diverse learners to design personally meaningful experiences that support student development and success. Designs of Blackness
Across more than two centuries Afro-America has created a huge and dazzling variety of literary self-expression. Designs of Blackness provides less a narrative literary history than, precisely, a series of mappings—each literary-critical and comparative while at the same time offering cultural and historical context. This carefully re-edited version of the 1998 publication opens with an estimation of earliest African American voice in the names of Phillis Wheatley and her contemporaries. It then takes up the huge span of autobiography from Frederick Douglass through to Maya Angelou. "Harlem on My Mind," which follows, sets out the literary contours of America’s premier black city. Womanism, Alice Walker’s presiding term, is given full due in an analysis of fiction from Harriet E. Wilson to Toni Morrison. Richard Wright is approached not as some regulation "realist" but as a more inward, at times near-surreal, author. Decadology has its risks but the 1940s has rarely been approached as a unique era of war and peace and especially in African American texts. Beat Generation work usually adheres to Ginsberg and Kerouac, but black Beat writing invites its own chapter in the names of Amiri Baraka, Ted Joans and Bob Kaufman. The 1960s has long become a mythic change-decade, and in few greater respects than as a black theatre both of the stage and politics. In Leon Forrest African America had a figure of the postmodern turn: his work is explored in its own right and for how it takes its place in the context of other reflexive black fiction. "African American Fictions of Passing" unpacks the whole deceptive trope of "race" in writing from Williams Wells Brown through to Charles Johnson. The two newly added chapters pursue African American literary achievement into the Obama-Trump century, fiction from Octavia Butler to Darryl Pinkney, poetry from Rita Dove to Kevin Young

Alternative Power: The Politics of Denmark\u27s Renewable Energy Transition
Global climate change is one of the defining political challenges and opportunities of the current era. Experts widely agree that technical means already exist for making the necessary transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy; the obstacles to doing so are primarily political. Careful observers also recognize that this period of transition creates an opening for political innovation and development. How can the political will be generated to take action to prevent climate catastrophe? And what will the process of transitioning mean for the political systems that have been built on cheap and abundant oil? Political scientists have largely ignored technological development as a lever for political development, or feared that technology could only be a force of domination. Yet renewable energy enthusiasts have often seen democratizing potential in these technologies. What can be accomplished politically by building a wind turbine? As countries like Denmark accumulate decades of experience with renewable energy, it is becoming possible to give such questions close empirical consideration. Denmark generates more of its electricity from renewable sources, and has been doing so longer, than any other industrialized nation, making it a uniquely valuable case for studying an advanced renewable energy transition in progress. This dissertation draws on novel qualitative and quantitative data to present the first comprehensive history of Denmark’s energy transition from its roots in the 1970s until the present, aiming to explain how this tiny nation emerged as the world’s leading wind power producer, and assess whether this process has yielded any democratic dividends. The multi-method analysis sheds new light on internal dynamics of Denmark’s energy transition, and, more generally, on late-stage evolutionary processes in mature technological systems. Many studies have shown an interest in the Danish case, which is usually presented as a relatively unqualified success story, but few have provided the empirical resolution to identify these complicating factors. This dissertation employs an explanatory strategy adapted from the ecological sciences to construct a more holistic and integrative portrait, resulting in a more thorough and accurate account of how Denmark jumped out to such a significant lead in the energy transition, and why that momentum might be flagging today, with implications for other countries hoping to chart a path toward a sustainable future
The Formation of Modern Persian Literature: A Comparative Investigation into the Writings of Taqī Rafʿat
This dissertation aims to study the emergence of modern literature in Iran alongside modernism in the international context by focusing on a particular case study, Taqī Rafʿat’s oeuvre. A historical material and theoretical background is provided to support such reading. Nevertheless, this comparative reading is done via particular images. The first image is an image of the Titanic and disastrous modernity. One can see the links of the disastrous modernity all over the globe. Modernity reshaped labour and economy, symbolised in the image of the peasant. The peasant’s image depicts this change in different literatures, particularly the Iranian one. The concept of oblivion in relation to history is presented in the image of a flying flare. Finally, the concept of anxiety is scrutinized to re-read Rafʿat’s oeuvre from that point of view

Sonic heritage: listening to the past
History is so often told through objects, images and photographs, but the potential of sounds to reveal place and space is often neglected. Our research project ‘Sonic Palimpsest’1 explores the potential of sound to evoke impressions and new understandings of the past, to embrace the sonic as a tool to understand what was, in a way that can complement and add to our predominant visual understandings. Our work includes the expansion of the Oral History archives held at Chatham Dockyard to include women’s voices and experiences, and the creation of sonic works to engage the public with their heritage. Our research highlights the social and cultural value of oral history and field recordings in the transmission of knowledge to both researchers and the public. Together these recordings document how buildings and spaces within the dockyard were used and experienced by those who worked there. We can begin to understand the social and cultural roles of these buildings within the community, both past and present
Life in Dickens-World : reading the read text
Such has been Dickens’ popularity, that we see today evidence of the activity of his readers all around us. This is the read text of the Dickens-World, inexact and distinctive. What is it like and how did it come to be?
Dickens’ public readings encapsulate a number of important themes. The model, or exemplar, that can take these themes forward is that of the Heritage, a term here used to describe both the physical evidence of the ‘national past’ and a treatment of it. The ‘truth’ of Heritage lies in the animated projection of the self into the arena of history, creating a performance that convinces by an affective adjacency.
A Heritage Dickens brand has been growing in North Kent for some years. It is expressed through the built environment, in museums and visitor attractions, and in events such as the Charles Dickens Festivals. With its mix-and-match approach to the novels, and its cavalier attitude towards history, its rationality is not immediately apparent.
However, the peculiar coherence asserted by Dickens’ work, additionally promoted by serial publication and the presence of illustrations, means that his novels are being continually spun out into the space of the world where they can grow. And be read again. The Dickens Fellowship has celebrated this kind of reading for many years.
In this radical openness of the Dickens-World, each reader is compelled to seek sense in the performance of reading. This is a dynamic in which the individual is both participant and observer at the same time, ethically engaged but aesthetically active. The pleasure of encountering the determinate world of fiction in the fluid unknown of the lived life is held in joyful tension with the revelation of seeing the self fixed in the world of art

Artistry, Aesthetic Experience, and Global Futures in Civilization Game Design: How the ESCAPe Framework as an Ontology Captures an Art Form of the Information Age
Civilization games can depict imaginative and sophisticated perspectives on the future. Yet some scholars have critiqued civilization games for their replication of dominant, limited ideologies. Game designers often learn about design directly or indirectly from frameworks, such as the Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics (MDA) framework which contains a very idiosyncratic definition of aesthetics.
Given that aesthetic thinking can unlock the sociological imagination, the aim of this dissertation was to discover opportunities to expand civilization game design by understanding the aesthetic experience of designers. A qualitative interview study was conducted of 13 game designers who created at least one civilization game based in the future. The interview and analysis had an ontological focus, to better understand how aesthetics fit into the existing puzzle of game design knowledge. The findings showed that designers employ their perspective in game design; this sense of self and perspective is not captured by current ontologies of game design.
Furthermore, designers are limited in their ability to explore the boundaries of civilization games by task complexity, emotionality, and reliance on player experience. Resultantly, they may focus intensely on known aspects of game design in order to deliver a product. The dissertation proposes two primary solutions. Firstly, a game design framework that integrates the self into game design and more clearly delineates the game as an artifact.
Secondly, cultivate truer senses of vision in game design for those who want to push civilization games and games as a whole, while understanding the practical realities of game design. These implications can be used by educators to reconsider game design program curricula, as well as affirm game designers’ pursuit of their own perspective
Efficient and Explainable Neural Ranking
The recent availability of increasingly powerful hardware has caused a shift from traditional information retrieval (IR) approaches based on term matching, which remained the state of the art for several decades, to large pre-trained neural language models. These neural rankers achieve substantial improvements in performance, as their complexity and extensive pre-training give them the ability of understanding natural language in a way. As a result, neural rankers go beyond term matching by performing relevance estimation based on the semantics of queries and documents.
However, these improvements in performance don't come without sacrifice. In this thesis, we focus on two fundamental challenges of neural ranking models, specifically, ones based on large language models: On the one hand, due to their complexity, the models are inefficient; they require considerable amounts of computational power, which often comes in the form of specialized hardware, such as GPUs or TPUs. Consequently, the carbon footprint is an increasingly important aspect of systems using neural IR. This effect is amplified when low latency is required, as in, for example, web search. On the other hand, neural models are known for being inherently unexplainable; in other words, it is often not comprehensible for humans why a neural model produced a specific output. In general, explainability is deemed important in order to identify undesired behavior, such as bias.
We tackle the efficiency challenge of neural rankers by proposing Fast-Forward indexes, which are simple vector forward indexes that heavily utilize pre-computation techniques. Our approach substantially reduces the computational load during query processing, enabling efficient ranking solely on CPUs without requiring hardware acceleration. Furthermore, we introduce BERT-DMN to show that the training efficiency of neural rankers can be improved by training only parts of the model.
In order to improve the explainability of neural ranking, we propose the Select-and-Rank paradigm to make ranking models explainable by design: First, a query-dependent subset of the input document is extracted to serve as an explanation; second, the ranking model makes its decision based only on the extracted subset, rather than the complete document. We show that our models exhibit performance similar to models that are not explainable by design and conduct a user study to determine the faithfulness of the explanations.
Finally, we introduce BoilerNet, a web content extraction technique that allows the removal of boilerplate from web pages, leaving only the main content in plain text. Our method requires no feature engineering and can be used to aid in the process of creating new document corpora from the web
