A Novel Intelligent Control System Design for Water BathTemperature Control
Abstract: In this paper a neuro-fuzzy controller (NFC) for temperaturecontrol of a water bath system is proposed.A five layer neural network is used to adjust input and output parameters of membership function in a fuzzy logic controller. The hybrid learning algorithm is used for training this network. The simulation results show that the proposedcontroller has good set point tracking and disturbance rejectionproperties. Also it is robust against changes in the systemparameters. It is also superior to the conventional PID controller
Dynamic non-linear system modelling using wavelet-based soft computing techniques
The enormous number of complex systems results in the necessity of high-level and cost-efficient
modelling structures for the operators and system designers. Model-based approaches offer a very
challenging way to integrate a priori knowledge into the procedure. Soft computing based models
in particular, can successfully be applied in cases of highly nonlinear problems. A further reason
for dealing with so called soft computational model based techniques is that in real-world cases,
many times only partial, uncertain and/or inaccurate data is available.
Wavelet-Based soft computing techniques are considered, as one of the latest trends in system
identification/modelling. This thesis provides a comprehensive synopsis of the main wavelet-based
approaches to model the non-linear dynamical systems in real world problems in conjunction with
possible twists and novelties aiming for more accurate and less complex modelling structure.
Initially, an on-line structure and parameter design has been considered in an adaptive Neuro-
Fuzzy (NF) scheme. The problem of redundant membership functions and consequently fuzzy
rules is circumvented by applying an adaptive structure. The growth of a special type of Fungus
(Monascus ruber van Tieghem) is examined against several other approaches for further
justification of the proposed methodology.
By extending the line of research, two Morlet Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) structures have
been introduced. Increasing the accuracy and decreasing the computational cost are both the
primary targets of proposed novelties. Modifying the synoptic weights by replacing them with
Linear Combination Weights (LCW) and also imposing a Hybrid Learning Algorithm (HLA)
comprising of Gradient Descent (GD) and Recursive Least Square (RLS), are the tools utilised for
the above challenges. These two models differ from the point of view of structure while they share
the same HLA scheme. The second approach contains an additional Multiplication layer, plus its
hidden layer contains several sub-WNNs for each input dimension. The practical superiority of
these extensions is demonstrated by simulation and experimental results on real non-linear
dynamic system; Listeria Monocytogenes survival curves in Ultra-High Temperature (UHT)
whole milk, and consolidated with comprehensive comparison with other suggested schemes.
At the next stage, the extended clustering-based fuzzy version of the proposed WNN schemes, is
presented as the ultimate structure in this thesis. The proposed Fuzzy Wavelet Neural network
(FWNN) benefitted from Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) clustering feature, updated by a
modified Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. One of the main aims of this thesis is to illustrate how the GMM-EM scheme could be used not only for detecting useful knowledge from
the data by building accurate regression, but also for the identification of complex systems.
The structure of FWNN is based on the basis of fuzzy rules including wavelet functions in the
consequent parts of rules. In order to improve the function approximation accuracy and general
capability of the FWNN system, an efficient hybrid learning approach is used to adjust the
parameters of dilation, translation, weights, and membership. Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is
employed for wavelet parameters adjustment together with Weighted Least Square (WLS) which
is dedicated for the Linear Combination Weights fine-tuning. The results of a real-world
application of Short Time Load Forecasting (STLF) further re-enforced the plausibility of the
above technique
Hybrid learning for interval type-2 intuitionistic fuzzy logic systems as applied to identification and prediction problems
This paper presents a novel application of a hybrid learning approach to the optimisation of membership and non-membership functions of a newly developed interval type-2 intuitionistic fuzzy logic system (IT2 IFLS) of a Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy inference system with neural network learning capability. The hybrid algorithms consisting of decou- pled extended Kalman filter (DEKF) and gradient descent (GD) are used to tune the parameters of the IT2 IFLS for the first time. The DEKF is used to tune the consequent parameters in the forward pass while the GD method is used to tune the antecedents parts during the backward pass of the hybrid learning. The hybrid algorithm is described and evaluated, prediction and identification results together with the runtime are compared with similar existing studies in the literature. Performance comparison is made between the proposed hybrid learning model of IT2 IFLS, a TSK-type-1 intuitionistic fuzzy logic system (IFLS-TSK) and a TSK-type interval type-2 fuzzy logic system (IT2 FLS-TSK) on two instances of the datasets under investigation. The empirical comparison is made on the designed systems using three artificially generated datasets and three real world datasets. Analysis of results reveal that IT2 IFLS outperforms its type-1 variants, IT2 FLS and most of the existing models in the literature. Moreover, the minimal run time of the proposed hybrid learning model for IT2 IFLS also puts this model forward as a good candidate for application in real time systems
Implementation of ANN Controller Based UPQC Integrated with Microgrid
This study discusses how to increase power quality by integrating a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) with a grid-connected microgrid for clean and efficient power generation. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) controller for a voltage source converter-based UPQC is proposed to minimize the system’s cost and complexity by eliminating mathematical operations such as a-b-c to d-q-0 translation and the need for costly controllers such as DSPs and FPGAs. In this study, nonlinear unbalanced loads and harmonic supply voltage are used to assess the performance of PV-battery-UPQC using an ANN-based controller. Problems with voltage, such as sag and swell, are also considered. This work uses an ANN control system trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation technique to provide effective reference signals and maintain the required dc-link capacitor voltage. In MATLAB/Simulink software, simulations of PV-battery-UPQC employing SRF-based control and ANN-control approaches are performed. The findings revealed that the proposed approach performed better, as presented in this paper. Furthermore, the influence of synchronous reference frame (SRF) and ANN controller-based UPQC on supply currents and the dc-link capacitor voltage response is studied. To demonstrate the superiority of the suggested controller, a comparison of percent THD in load voltage and supply current utilizing SRF-based control and ANN control methods is shown
Development of a Self-Learning Approach Applied to Pattern Recognition and Fuzzy Control
Systeme auf Basis von Fuzzy-Regeln sind in der Entwicklung der Mustererkennung und Steuersystemen weit verbreitet verwendet. Die meisten aktuellen Methoden des Designs der Fuzzy-Regel-basierte Systeme leiden unter folgenden Problemen
1. Das Verfahren der Fuzzifizierung berücksichtigt weder die statistischen Eigenschaften noch reale Verteilung der betrachteten Daten / Signale nicht. Daher sind die generierten Fuzzy- Zugehörigkeitsfunktionen nicht wirklich in der Lage, diese Daten zu äußern. Darüber hinaus wird der Prozess der Fuzzifizierung manuell definiert.
2. Die ursprüngliche Größe der Regelbasis ist pauschal bestimmt. Diese Feststellung bedeutet, dass dieses Verfahren eine Redundanz in den verwendeten Regeln produzieren kann. Somit wird diese Redundanz zum Auftreten der Probleme von Komplexität und Dimensionalität führen. Der Prozess der Vermeidung dieser Probleme durch das Auswahlverfahren der einschlägigen Regeln kann zum Rechenaufwandsproblem führen.
3. Die Form der Fuzzy-Regel leidet unter dem Problem des Verlusts von Informationen, was wiederum zur Zuschreibung diesen betrachteten Variablen anderen unrealen Bereich führen kann.
4. Ferner wird die Anpassung der Fuzzy- Zugehörigkeitsfunktionen mit den Problemen von Komplexität und Rechenaufwand, wegen der damit verbundenen Iteration und mehrerer Parameter, zugeordnet. Auch wird diese Anpassung im Bereich jeder einzelner Regel realisiert; das heißt, der Anpassungsprozess im Bereich der gesamten Fuzzy-Regelbasis wird nicht durchgeführt

Automated visual inspection for the quality control of pad printing
Pad printing is used to decorate consumer goods largely because of its unique ability to apply graphics to doubly curved surfaces. The Intelpadrint project was conceived to develop a better understanding of the process and new printing pads, inks and printers. The thesis deals primarily with the research of a printer control system including machine vision. At present printing is manually controlled. Operator knowledge was gathered for use by an expert system to control the process. A novel local corner- matching algorithm was conceived to effect image segmentation, and neuro-fuzzy techniques were used to recognise patterns in printing errors. Non-linear Finite Element Analysis of the rubber printing-pad led to a method for pre-distorting artwork so that it would print undistorted on a curved product. A flexible, more automated printer was developed that achieves a higher printing rate. Ultraviolet-cured inks with improved printability were developed. The image normalisation/ error-signalling stage in inspection was proven in isolation, as was the pattern recognition system

Interval type-2 Atanassov-intuitionistic fuzzy logic for uncertainty modelling
This thesis investigates a new paradigm for uncertainty modelling by employing a new class of type-2 fuzzy logic system that utilises fuzzy sets with membership and non-membership functions that are intervals. Fuzzy logic systems, employing type-1 fuzzy sets, that mark a shift from computing with numbers towards computing with words have made remarkable impacts in the field of artificial intelligence. Fuzzy logic systems of type-2, a generalisation of type-1 fuzzy logic systems that utilise type-2 fuzzy sets, have created tremendous advances in uncertainty modelling. The key feature of the type-2 fuzzy logic systems, with particular reference to interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems, is that the membership functions of interval type-2 fuzzy sets are themselves fuzzy. These give interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems an advantage over their type-1 counterparts which have precise membership functions. Whilst the interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems are effective in modelling uncertainty, they are not able to adequately handle an indeterminate/neutral characteristic of a set, because interval type-2 fuzzy sets are only specified by membership functions with an implicit assertion that the non-membership functions are complements of the membership functions (lower or upper). In a real life scenario, it is not necessarily the case that the non-membership function of a set is complementary to the membership function. There may be some degree of hesitation arising from ignorance or a complete lack of interest concerning a particular phenomenon. Atanassov intuitionistic fuzzy set, another generalisation of the classical fuzzy set, captures this thought process by simultaneously defining a fuzzy set with membership and non-membership functions such that the sum of both membership and non-membership functions is less than or equal to 1. In this thesis, the advantages of both worlds (interval type-2 fuzzy set and Atanassov intuitionistic fuzzy set) are explored and a new and enhanced class of interval type-2 fuzzy set namely, interval type-2 Atanassov intuitionistic fuzzy set, that enables hesitation, is introduced. In order to assess the viability and efficacy of the developed framework, the possibilities of the optimisation of the parameters of this class of fuzzy systems are rigorously examined.
First, the parameters of the developed model are optimised using one of the most popular fuzzy logic optimisation algorithms such as gradient descent (first-order derivative) algorithm and evaluated on publicly available benchmark datasets from diverse domains and characteristics. It is shown that the new interval type-2 Atanassov intuitionistic fuzzy logic system is able to handle uncertainty well through the minimisation of the error of the system compared with other approaches on the same problem instances and performance criteria.
Secondly, the parameters of the proposed framework are optimised using a decoupledextended Kalman filter (second-order derivative) algorithm in order to address the shortcomings of the first-order gradient descent method. It is shown statistically that the performance of this new framework with fuzzy membership and non-membership functions is significantly better than the classical interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems which have only the fuzzy membership functions, and its type-1 counterpart which are specified by single membership and non-membership functions.
The model is also assessed using a hybrid learning of decoupled extended Kalman filter and gradient descent methods. The proposed framework with hybrid learning algorithm is evaluated by comparing it with existing approaches reported in the literature on the same problem instances and performance metrics. The simulation results have demonstrated the potential benefits of using the proposed framework in uncertainty modelling. In the overall, the fusion of these two concepts (interval type-2 fuzzy logic system and Atanassov intuitionistic fuzzy logic system) provides a synergistic capability in dealing with imprecise and vague information
