Articulatory and bottleneck features for speaker-independent ASR of dysarthric speech
The rapid population aging has stimulated the development of assistive
devices that provide personalized medical support to the needies suffering from
various etiologies. One prominent clinical application is a computer-assisted
speech training system which enables personalized speech therapy to patients
impaired by communicative disorders in the patient's home environment. Such a
system relies on the robust automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology to be
able to provide accurate articulation feedback. With the long-term aim of
developing off-the-shelf ASR systems that can be incorporated in clinical
context without prior speaker information, we compare the ASR performance of
speaker-independent bottleneck and articulatory features on dysarthric speech
used in conjunction with dedicated neural network-based acoustic models that
have been shown to be robust against spectrotemporal deviations. We report ASR
performance of these systems on two dysarthric speech datasets of different
characteristics to quantify the achieved performance gains. Despite the
remaining performance gap between the dysarthric and normal speech, significant
improvements have been reported on both datasets using speaker-independent ASR

An Intervening Ethical Governor for a Robot Mediator in Patient-Caregiver Relationships

caregivers due to their declining control over their musculature. To remedy those challenges, a
robot mediator can be used to assist in the relationship between PD patients and their caregivers.
In this context, a variety of ethical issues can arise. To overcome one issue in particular,
providing therapeutic robots with a robot architecture that can ensure patients’ and caregivers’
dignity is of potential value. In this paper, we describe an intervening ethical governor for a
robot that enables it to ethically intervene, both to maintain effective patient–caregiver
relationships and prevent the loss of dignity
Human-centred design methods : developing scenarios for robot assisted play informed by user panels and field trials
Original article can be found at: http://www.sciencedirect.com/ Copyright ElsevierThis article describes the user-centred development of play scenarios for robot assisted play, as part of the multidisciplinary IROMEC1 project that develops a novel robotic toy for children with special needs. The project investigates how robotic toys can become social mediators, encouraging children with special needs to discover a range of play styles, from solitary to collaborative play (with peers, carers/teachers, parents, etc.). This article explains the developmental process of constructing relevant play scenarios for children with different special needs. Results are presented from consultation with panel of experts (therapists, teachers, parents) who advised on the play needs for the various target user groups and who helped investigate how robotic toys could be used as a play tool to assist in the children’s development. Examples from experimental investigations are provided which have informed the development of scenarios throughout the design process. We conclude by pointing out the potential benefit of this work to a variety of research projects and applications involving human–robot interactions.Peer reviewe

Empowering Expression for Users with Aphasia through Constrained Creativity
Creative activities allow people to express themselves in rich, nuanced ways. However, being creative does not always come easily. For example, people with speech and language impairments, such as aphasia, face challenges in creative activities that involve language. In this paper, we explore the concept of constrained creativity as a way of addressing this challenge and enabling creative writing. We report an app, MakeWrite, that supports the constrained creation of digital texts through automated redaction. The app was co-designed with and for people with aphasia and was subsequently explored in a workshop with a group of people with aphasia. Participants were not only successful in crafting novel language, but, importantly, self-reported that the app was crucial in enabling them to do so. We refect on the potential of technology-supported constrained creativity as a means of empowering expression amongst users with diverse needs

The work described in this paper is part of the IROMEC project (Interactive Robotic Social Mediators as Companions) that recognizes the important role of play in child development and targets children who are prevented from or inhibited in playing. The project investigates the role of an interactive, autonomous robotic toy in therapy and education for children with special needs. This paper specifically addresses the therapeutic and educational objectives related to children with autism. In recent years, robots have already been used to teach basic social interaction skills to children with autism. The added value of the IROMEC robot is that play scenarios have been developed taking children's specific strengths and needs into consideration and covering a wide range of objectives in children's development areas (sensory, communicational and interaction, motor, cognitive and social and emotional). The paper describes children's developmental areas and illustrates how different experiences and interactions with the IROMEC robot are designed to target objectives in these areas
