    The Application of Dominance-based Rough Sets Theory to Evaluation of Transportation Systems

    AbstractThe paper presents an original procedure of evaluation of a transportation system, resulting in its assignment into a predefined class, representing the overall standard of the considered system and the level of transportation service. The method relies on the application of the dominance-based rough set theory (DRST), allows for thorough data exploration, evaluation of informational content of the considered characteristics and generation of certain decision rules that support t he evaluation process. In the analysis different characteristics (criteria and attributes) describing various aspects of a transportation system operations are taken into account. The assignment of a transportation system to a specific quality class is performed based on the values of characteristics which are compared with the evaluation pattern, i.e. the set of decision rules generated through the analysis of customers’ opinions and expectations concerning a transportation system. The method is composed of three major steps, including: 1) identification of the most important characteristics, 2) generation of the evaluation pattern, and 3) assignment of the transportation system to the appropriate class. In the evaluation process five key components of a transportation system, including: transportation means, human resources, informational resources, transportation infrastructure and technical equipment as well as organizational rules are considered

    Prediction of Road Accident Risk for Vehicle Fleet Based on Statistically Processed Tire Wear Model

    The goal of the paper is to investigate the impact of tire tread depth on road accident risk and to develop an accident rate prediction model. The state of 4288 vehicle tires using tread depth gauge was inspected and processed statistically. The tread depth of the most worn tire from each vehicle was registered for further analysis. Based on the collected data, a statistical tire tread depth model for an insurance company vehicle fleet had been developed. The conformity of the gamma distribution to the data was verified upon applying the Pearson compatibility criterion. The paper provides the histograms of the frequencies of tire tread depths and the theoretical curves of the distribution density. The probability of the accident risk depending on the tire tread depth (adaptive risk index) was calculated applying the formed distributions and risk index dependence on the tire tread depth for the inspected vehicle fleet. According to the developed prediction model, an upgrade of the regulation for the minimum allowed tire tread depth by 2 mm (up to 3.6 mm) could reduce road accident risk (caused by poor adhesion to road surface) to 19.3% for the chosen vehicle fleet. Such models are useful for road safety experts, insurance companies and accident cost evaluation specialists by predicting expenses related to insurance events

    Determining Logistics Ground Support Manpower Requirements for a Reusable Military Launch Vehicle

    Successful space-based technologies like satellite imagery and GPS have increased military demand for a rapid-response launch capability. AF Space Command\u27s Operationally Responsive Spacelift program was developed to ensure that the AF has the capability to launch a payload into orbit within hours of a tasking notification, and requires development of a new space launch vehicle. The Reusable Military Launch Vehicle (RMLV) is currently in the design phase. The AF Research Laboratory sponsored development of the MILEPOST simulation model in order to assess the turnaround time, and thus responsiveness, of various design alternatives. The focus of this thesis is to improve the fidelity of the MILEPOST model by assessing the logistics manpower required to support the modeled turnaround activities. The research determined the appropriate AF organizational structure and manpower requirements for RMLV ground support agencies based on the activities modeled in MILEPOST. This information will be incorporated into the model in future research efforts, resulting in the capability to evaluate RMLV design alternatives based on both turnaround time and workforce requirements

    A Systematic Mapping Study of Digital Twins for Diagnosis in Transportation

    In recent years, digital twins have been proposed and implemented in various fields with potential applications ranging from prototyping to maintenance. Going forward, they are to enable numerous efficient and sustainable technologies, among them autonomous cars. However, despite a large body of research in many fields, academics have yet to agree on what exactly a digital twin is -- and as a result, what its capabilities and limitations might be. To further our understanding, we explore the capabilities of digital twins concerning diagnosis in the field of transportation. We conduct a systematic mapping study including digital twins of vehicles and their components, as well as transportation infrastructure. We discovered that few papers on digital twins describe any diagnostic process. Furthermore, most existing approaches appear limited to system monitoring or fault detection. These findings suggest that we need more research for diagnostic reasoning utilizing digital twins

    This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.

    In July 2006 archaeologists from the University of Bristol and Atkins Heritage embarked on a contemporary archaeology project with a difference. We ‘excavated’ an old (1991) Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists and later by works and maintenance teams at the Ironbridge Museum. The object: to see what can be learnt from a very particular, common and characteristic type of contemporary place; to establish what archaeologists and archaeology can contribute to understanding the way society, and specifically we as archaeologists, use and inhabit these places; and to challenge and critique archaeologies of the contemporary past. In this report we describe our excavation and situate it within a wider debate about research practice in contemporary archaeology
