Self-organizing, social and adaptive nature of agile information systems development teams : essays on leadership and learning
Information Systems Development (ISD) keeps changing and evolving rapidly in a huge variety of aspects, including the technologies that are developed, the methods that are applied, and the structures in which it is organized (Avison & Fitzgerald, 2006). Noticing the need for further understanding of adaptive outcomes such as learning and leadership in agile ISD teams, this research is divided into different phases. The first phase was the review of the literature on learning in the Information Systems literature within IS development teams. Findings from the systematic literature review are reported in Paper 1, entitled âTeam Learning in Information Systems Development: A Literature Reviewâ. The last phase includes a comprehensive case study through which Paper 2, entitled âSelf-Organization and Leadership in Agile Teams: A Complexity Leadership Approachâ, and Paper 3, entitled âSocial Capital and Adaptive Outcomes in Agile Information Systems Development Teamsâ, are derived
Comparative research: Team learning in higher education
Team learning is the process of aligning and developing the capacity of a team to create the
results its members truly desireâ (Senge, 1990, p 236). This emphasizes the significance of
team learning as the fundamental learning units. Despite its importance, team learning
among employees in higher education, especially among academics remains poorly
understood. This research aims at shedding a light in the area which has recently been
urged by the increasingly demanding requirements of interdisciplinary research and teaching
in higher education around the world. Through a thorough literature review, a model of team
learning has been built with a set of antecedents, two moderators, and the outcome of
mental models. Hypotheses were formed, including team commitment, goal setting,
development and training, organizational culture, and leadership are positively associated
with team learning (antecedents), team learning is positively associated with knowledge
sharing (outcome), and better communication systems, and learning environment provide
better outcome of team learning (moderators). Thus, the study tested both mediating and

moderating relationships. The data were collected in a form of self-report questionnaires. The
model was tested with the data collected from employees of two universities, one in the UK
and the other in Vietnam. The findings revealed interesting information on the differences
between two universities/two cultures, which is often the benefits of comparative research.
The case in VN had more positive results than the case in the UK. There are not many
differences between academic and non-academic employees, or between employees who
work in science and non-science areas. The research could not avoid some limitations due to
self-report questionnaires, though some actions were conducted to reduce research bias. In
addition, it is really difficult to measure team performance in higher education, which should
have been another outcome of team learning
Nurturing care indicators for the Brazilian Early Childhood Friendly Municipal Index (IMAPI)
The Nurturing Care Framework (NCF) calls for establishing a global monitoring and accountability systems for early childhood development (ECD). Major gaps to build low-cost and large-scale ECD monitoring systems at the local level remain. In this manuscript, we describe the process of selecting nurturing care indicators at the municipal level from existing routine information systems to develop the Brazilian Early Childhood Friendly Index (IMAPI). Three methodological steps developed through a participatory decision-making process were followed. First, a literature review identified potential indicators to translate the NCF domains. Four technical panels composed of stakeholders from federal, state and municipal levels were consulted to identify data sources, their availability at the municipal level and the strengths and weakness of each potential indicator. Second, national and international ECD experts participated in two surveys to score, following a SMART approach, the expected performance of each nurturing care indicator. This information was used to develop analytical weights for each indicator. Third, informed by strengths and weaknesses pointed out in the previous steps, the IMAPI team reached consensus on 31 nurturing care indicators across the five NCF domains (Good health [n = 14], Adequate nutrition [4], Responsive caregiving [1], Opportunities for early learning [7] and Security and safety [4]). IMAPI represents the first attempt to select nurturing care indicators at the municipal level using data from existing routine information systems
Editorial Design and Development System for High School Vocational Textbook
This research introduces the systematic concepts of editorial design, unique to printing and advertisement, and their applications to textbooks, to develop an editorial design system useful in the development of textbooks for vocational high school courses that are in accordance with the objectives of the Seventh Education Course, yet, are, from a student's perspective, more effective, interesting, and structured, and, thereby, systematically provide the requisite preliminary information and application methods. The research consisted of a review of the purpose and role of the textbook, general applications and configuration methods of editorial design, analysis of the motivational factors of vocational high school students, teaching and learning methods, and a comparison of design systems between the indigenous textbooks in current use and those used abroad. The results of the review helped to establish principles for an editorial design system for vocational high school textbooks and suggestions for its application. The results of the research were reached after a review and analysis of related literature, three textbook analysis workshops that provided a source for expert advice, and interviews and seminars. Identification of Core Multidisciplinary Competencies in an Integrated Public Health and Human Service System
In response to economic, legislative and social forces, public health and human service systems are becoming more integrative, requiring direct service practitioners to acquire new competencies to successfully perform in these new settings. In a review of the literature, competencies pertaining to team effectiveness, interprofessional collaboration and cross-functional knowledge and skills all appear to be relevant considerations. Moreover, an examination of competencies must consider individual, team and organizational dimensions in a context of health and welfare reform. However, the current literature is fragmented, limited in scope and empirically inconclusive. A descriptive, qualitative study was therefore warranted. The following research question was addressed: âWhat are the core multidisciplinary competencies perceived to be essential among direct service practitioners in an integrated public health and human service system?â I selected a pilot prevention and early intervention team who have innovative experiences adopting a multidisciplinary approach to integrating public health and human services. I conducted ethnographic interviews with consenting members of the team. A follow-up focus group was held, which served to clarify and validate interview data. Domain analyses of interview and focus group data was completed. Data analysis yielded over 300 descriptorsâkey phrases or words that appeared to have some relation to learning (knowledge, skills and/or attitudes), whether at an individual, team or organizational level. Descriptors were clustered into themes, which were then labeled. The themes were clustered into core competency areas. And core competency areas were organized into competency domains. Four competency domains and seventeen related competency areas (in parentheses) emerged: 1) Pre-requisite Personal and Professional Competencies (interpersonal effectiveness, cultural competency, family and customer focused, multidisciplinary teams, and the county system); 2) Integrated Client Service Delivery (client advocacy and empowerment, information and referral, screening and early intervention, crisis intervention, case management, community resources, specific functions and populations); 3) Program Operations (planning and development, and leadership, community collaboration, and administrative and technical); and 4) Organizational Competence (identifying and resolving challenges). I concluded the dissertation with several responses to the research question. First, I framed the competency domains and areas into specific, behavioral competency statements. These statements can serve as tools for policy and organizational development, curriculum design and development, performance standards and appraisal, and rewards and recognition. Second I presented the implications of these competencies in light of the literature, noting areas of reinforcement and innovation. Third, I presented a multidisciplinary competency model, designed to promote individual, team and organizational learning to facilitate the integration of health and human services. I then discussed the limitations of this study and offered suggestions for future research and development
Evaluating use of the SimVenture computer-based business simulation
Objectives
The paper evaluates the impact of one of the market-leading computer-based start-up business simulations â SimVenture â using a version of the Rugby Team Impact Framework (RTIF; e.g. Bromley et al., 2012) adapted by the authors for use within an enterprise education context. Four case studies of the use of SimVenture in non-Business School subjects in Higher Education in the UK are described and analysed using the RTIF.
Prior Work
A survey of entrepreneurship education programmes conducted in 2006 by McKeown et al. concluded that delivery methods proved to be more traditional than anticipated, with few instances of action learning or the use of technology to support learning. Serious games, including business computer-based business simulations, have the potential to support learning by doing (Williams 2011, QAA 2012, Lopes et al. 2013), and have been shown to develop a range of skills including those described as necessary for the 21st Century (Romero et al., 2015). There are, however, few examples in the literature evaluating student-focused impact of business simulations in non-Business School subjects. With increasing calls to spread enterprise and entrepreneurship education to all (Anderson et al, 2014; Young, 2014), can serious games and business simulations such as SimVenture provide an effective solution?
Approach
Four undergraduate programmes in a range of non-Business subject areas (including computing and information systems; fashion and textiles; and veterinary practice) were selected for in-depth interviews following a literature review and web-based desk exercise to identify examples of practice. Case studies were produced exploring why SimVenture was chosen for use with students; how it was used (make-up of student cohort; size of working groups; number of sessions and over what time period, etc.); how learning was assessed; evaluation of learning and process; and lessons learned by the educator. The impact of SimVenture on student behaviour, learning, and longer term outcomes was analysed using the RTIF.
Results
The RTIF proved a useful tool for assessing the impact of SimVenture. All case studies reported positive outcomes for students with evidence of increased business and finance knowledge, skills development, and a wider appreciation of career options. Improved attendance and retention rates as a direct result of using SimVenture were also reported at one institution. Suggestions for practice are presented using the case study examples.
Implications
The results of the research suggest that serious games, in this case business simulations (using SimVenture as a specific example) can have positive outcomes on the student experience and business skills development through learning by doing.
Value
The paper contributes to the literature on use of computer-based business simulations, providing specific examples of practice that can be used by academics looking to embed enterprise and entrepreneurship education in non-Business subject-specific curricular. It also introduces an adapted framework which can be used to evaluate the impact of enterprise and entrepreneurship education programmes

Team Learning: A Theoretical Integration and Review
With the increasing emphasis on work teams as the primary architecture of organizational structure, scholars have begun to focus attention on team learning, the processes that support it, and the important outcomes that depend on it. Although the literature addressing learning in teams is broad, it is also messy and fraught with conceptual confusion. This chapter presents a theoretical integration and review. The goal is to organize theory and research on team learning, identify actionable frameworks and findings, and emphasize promising targets for future research. We emphasize three theoretical foci in our examination of team learning, treating it as multilevel (individual and team, not individual or team), dynamic (iterative and progressive; a process not an outcome), and emergent (outcomes of team learning can manifest in different ways over time). The integrative theoretical heuristic distinguishes team learning process theories, supporting emergent states, team knowledge representations, and respective influences on team performance and effectiveness. Promising directions for theory development and research are discussed
Team Learning, Development, and Adaptation
[Excerpt] Our purpose is to explore conceptually these themes centered on team learning, development, and adaptation. We note at the onset that this chapter is not a comprehensive review of the literature. Indeed, solid conceptual and empirical work on these themes are sparse relative to the vast amount of work on team effectiveness more generally, and therefore a thematic set of topics that are ripe for conceptual development and integration. We draw on an ongoing stream of theory development and research in these areas to integrate and sculpt a distinct perspective on team learning, development, and adaptation
