Active learning based laboratory towards engineering education 4.0
Universities have a relevant and essential key role to ensure knowledge and development of competencies in the current fourth industrial revolution called Industry 4.0. The Industry 4.0 promotes a set of digital technologies to allow the convergence between the information technology and the operation technology towards smarter factories. Under such new framework, multiple initiatives are being carried out worldwide as response of such evolution, particularly, from the engineering education point of view. In this regard, this paper introduces the initiative that is being carried out at the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, called Industry 4.0 Technologies Laboratory, I4Tech Lab. The I4Tech laboratory represents a technological environment for the academic, research and industrial promotion of related technologies. First, in this work, some of the main aspects considered in the definition of the so called engineering education 4.0 are discussed. Next, the proposed laboratory architecture, objectives as well as considered technologies are explained. Finally, the basis of the proposed academic method supported by an active learning approach is presented.Postprint (published version
CESEC Chair – Training Embedded System Architects for the Critical Systems Domain
Increasing complexity and interactions across scientific and tech- nological domains in the engineering of critical systems calls for new pedagogical approach. In this paper, we introduce the CESEC teaching chair. This chair aims at supporting new integrative ap- proach for the initial training of engineer and master curriculum to three engineering school in Toulouse: ISAE, INSA Toulouse and INP ENSEEIHT. It is supported by the EADS Corporate Foundation. In this paper, we highlight the rationale for this chair: need for sys- tem architect with strong foundations on technical domains appli- cable to the aerospace industry. We then introduce the ideal profile for this architect and the various pedagogical approaches imple- mented to reach this objective
Building capacity for public and population health research in Africa : the consortium for advanced research training in Africa (CARTA) model
Background: Globally, sub-Saharan Africa bears the greatest burden of disease. Strengthened research
capacity to understand the social determinants of health among different African populations is key to
addressing the drivers of poor health and developing interventions to improve health outcomes and health
systems in the region. Yet, the continent clearly lacks centers of research excellence that can generate a strong
evidence base to address the region’s socio-economic and health problems.
Objective and program overview: We describe the recently launched Consortium for Advanced Research
Training in Africa (CARTA), which brings together a network of nine academic and four research institutions
from West, East, Central, and Southern Africa, and select northern universities and training institutes.
CARTA’s program of activities comprises two primary, interrelated, and mutually reinforcing objectives: to
strengthen research infrastructure and capacity at African universities; and to support doctoral training
through the creation of a collaborative doctoral training program in population and public health. The
ultimate goal of CARTA is to build local research capacity to understand the determinants of population
health and effectively intervene to improve health outcomes and health systems.
Conclusions: CARTA’s focus on the local production of networked and high-skilled researchers committed to
working in sub-Saharan Africa, and on the concomitant increase in local research and training capacity of
African universities and research institutes addresses the inability of existing programs to create a critical
mass of well-trained and networked researchers across the continent. The initiative’s goal of strengthening
human resources and university-wide systems critical to the success and sustainability of research
productivity in public and population health will rejuvenate institutional teaching, research, and administrative
systems
Exposing the Intellectual Assets of a University Department
Works for designing and deploying a university department repository are presented. General considerations about policies and functional requirements are outlined with respect to the institution context. Technical and system issues are briefly discussed. Finally the benefits and usability of the repository are summarized
On the Presence of Green and Sustainable Software Engineering in Higher Education Curricula
Nowadays, software is pervasive in our everyday lives. Its sustainability and
environmental impact have become major factors to be considered in the
development of software systems. Millennials-the newer generation of university
students-are particularly keen to learn about and contribute to a more
sustainable and green society. The need for training on green and sustainable
topics in software engineering has been reflected in a number of recent
studies. The goal of this paper is to get a first understanding of what is the
current state of teaching sustainability in the software engineering community,
what are the motivations behind the current state of teaching, and what can be
done to improve it. To this end, we report the findings from a targeted survey
of 33 academics on the presence of green and sustainable software engineering
in higher education. The major findings from the collected data suggest that
sustainability is under-represented in the curricula, while the current focus
of teaching is on energy efficiency delivered through a fact-based approach.
The reasons vary from lack of awareness, teaching material and suitable
technologies, to the high effort required to teach sustainability. Finally, we
provide recommendations for educators willing to teach sustainability in

Underwater Hacker Missile Wars: A Cryptography and Engineering Contest
For a recent student conference, the authors developed a day-long design
problem and competition suitable for engineering, mathematics and science
undergraduates. The competition included a cryptography problem, for which a
workshop was run during the conference. This paper describes the competition,
focusing on the cryptography problem and the workshop. Notes from the workshop
and code for the computer programs are made available via the Internet. The
