The Distributed Ontology Language (DOL): Use Cases, Syntax, and Extensibility
The Distributed Ontology Language (DOL) is currently being standardized
within the OntoIOp (Ontology Integration and Interoperability) activity of
ISO/TC 37/SC 3. It aims at providing a unified framework for (1) ontologies
formalized in heterogeneous logics, (2) modular ontologies, (3) links between
ontologies, and (4) annotation of ontologies. This paper presents the current
state of DOL's standardization. It focuses on use cases where distributed
ontologies enable interoperability and reusability. We demonstrate relevant
features of the DOL syntax and semantics and explain how these integrate into

Ontology technology for the development and deployment of learning technology systems - a survey
The World-Wide Web is undergoing dramatic changes at the moment. The Semantic Web is an initiative to bring meaning to the Web. The Semantic Web is based on ontology
technology – a knowledge representation framework – at its core. We illustrate the importance of this evolutionary development. We survey five scenarios demonstrating different forms of applications of ontology technologies in the development and deployment of learning technology

Spud 1.0: generalising and automating the user interfaces of scientific computer models
The interfaces by which users specify the scenarios to be simulated by scientific computer models are frequently primitive, under-documented and ad-hoc text files which make using the model in question difficult and error-prone and significantly increase the development cost of the model. In this paper, we present a model-independent system, Spud, which formalises the specification of model input formats in terms of formal grammars. This is combined with an automated graphical user interface which guides users to create valid model inputs based on the grammar provided, and a generic options reading module, libspud, which minimises the development cost of adding model options. <br><br> Together, this provides a user friendly, well documented, self validating user interface which is applicable to a wide range of scientific models and which minimises the developer input required to maintain and extend the model interface

Transitioning Applications to Semantic Web Services: An Automated Formal Approach
Semantic Web Services have been recognized as a promising technology that exhibits huge commercial potential, and attract significant attention from both industry and the research community. Despite expectations being high, the industrial take-up of Semantic Web Service technologies has been slower than expected. One of the main reasons is that many systems have been developed without considering the potential of the web in integrating services and sharing resources. Without a systematic methodology and proper tool support, the migration from legacy systems to Semantic Web Service-based systems can be a very tedious and expensive process, which carries a definite risk of failure. There is an urgent need to provide strategies which allow the migration of legacy systems to Semantic Web Services platforms, and also tools to support such a strategy. In this paper we propose a methodology for transitioning these applications to Semantic Web Services by taking the advantage of rigorous mathematical methods. Ensuring Query Compatibility with Evolving XML Schemas
During the life cycle of an XML application, both schemas and queries may
change from one version to another. Schema evolutions may affect query results
and potentially the validity of produced data. Nowadays, a challenge is to
assess and accommodate the impact of theses changes in rapidly evolving XML
applications.
This article proposes a logical framework and tool for verifying
forward/backward compatibility issues involving schemas and queries. First, it
allows analyzing relations between schemas. Second, it allows XML designers to
identify queries that must be reformulated in order to produce the expected
results across successive schema versions. Third, it allows examining more
precisely the impact of schema changes over queries, therefore facilitating
their reformulation
A Taxonomy of Workflow Management Systems for Grid Computing
With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and
engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process
large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources.
Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex
workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of
workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a
taxonomy that characterizes and classifies various approaches for building and
executing workflows on Grids. We also survey several representative Grid
workflow systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the
comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the design
and engineering similarities and differences of state-of-the-art in Grid
