PCODE: an efficient and reliable collective communication protocol for unreliable broadcast domain

Existing programming environments for clusters are typically built on top of a point-to-point communication layer (send and receive) over local area networks (LANs) and, as a result, suffer from poor performance in the collective communication part. For example, a broadcast that is implemented using a TCP/IP protocol (which is a point-to-point protocol) over a LAN is obviously inefficient as it is not utilizing the fact that the LAN is a broadcast medium. We have observed that the main difference between a distributed computing paradigm and a message passing parallel computing paradigm is that, in a distributed environment the activity of every processor is independent while in a parallel environment the collection of the user-communication layers in the processors can be modeled as a single global program. We have formalized the requirements by defining the notion of a correct global program. This notion provides a precise specification of the interface between the transport layer and the user-communication layer. We have developed PCODE, a new communication protocol that is driven by a global program and proved its correctness. We have implemented the PCODE protocol on a collection of IBM RS/6000 workstations and on a collection of Silicon Graphics Indigo workstations, both communicating via UDP broadcast. The experimental results we obtained indicate that the performance advantage of PCODE over the current point-to-point approach (TCP) can be as high as an order of magnitude on a cluster of 16 workstations

Secure local area network services for a high assurance multilevel network

To reduce the cost and complexity of the current DoD information infrastructure, a Multilevel Secure (MLS) network solution eliminating hardware redundancies is required. Implementing a high assurance MLS LAN requires the ability to extend a trusted path over a TCP/IP network. No high assurance network trusted path mechanisms currently exist. We present a design and proof- of-concept implementation for a Secure LAN Server that provides the trusted path between a trusted computing base extension (TCBE) servicing a COTS PC and protocol servers executing at single sensitivity levels on the XTS-300. The trusted path establishes high assurance communications (over a TCP/IP network) between a TCBE and the Secure LAN Server. This trusted channel is used first for user authentication, then as a trusted relay between the protocol server and TCBE. All transmitted data passed over the LAN can be protected by encryption, providing assurance of integrity and confidentiality for the data. This thesis documents the implementation of a demonstration prototype Secure LAN Server using existing technology, including high assurance systems, COTS hardware, and COTS software, to provide access to multilevel data in a user-friendly environment. Our accomplishment is crucial to the development of a full scale MLS LAN.http://archive.org/details/securelocalrenet1094513583U.S. Navy (U.S.N.) authors.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Class-Based Weighted Window for TCP Fairness in WLANs

The explosive growth of the Internet has extended to the wireless domain. The number of Internet users and mobile devices with wireless Internet access is continuously increasing. However, the network resource is essentially limited, and fair service is a key issue in bandwidth allocation. In this research, the focus is on the issue of fairness among wireless stations having different number and direction of flows for different required bandwidth to ensure that fair channel is fairly shared between wireless stations in the same class of bandwidth. It is shown that the current WLANs allocate bandwidth unfairly. It is also identified that the cause of this problem of unfairness is the TCP cumulative ACK mechanism combined with the packet dropping mechanism of AP queue and the irregular space for each wireless station in AP queue. The proposed method allocate converged bandwidth by introducing a Class-Based Weighted Window method which adjusts the TCP window size based on the current conditions of the network and according to the network’s requirements. This method works in wireless stations without requiring any modification in MAC. It can guarantee fair service in terms of throughput among wireless users whether they require the same or different bandwidth.Wireless LAN, TCP, Fairness

Internet of things (IoT) is one of the leading technologies which spanned from the trivial consumer applications to time-critical industrial applications. The current research in IoT focuses mostly on network performance as it is experiencing bottlenecks in data communication. IoT communication preferred UDP due to the limitations of TCP hard-state handshaking procedures on throughput. Proposed work developed a prototype with IoT devices communicating on a new internet architecture i.e. recursive inter-networking architecture (RINA) which has eliminated hard-state handshaking procedures. The impact of RINA on the network performance in process control and data acquisition is observed in terms of latency variations, network jitter and throughput. The results were compared against the network performance when the proposed prototype was communicating on TCP/IP. A Comparative analysis was provided to identify the improved network performance in RINA. This prototype was implemented in closed network configurations like LAN and WLAN in RINA as well as TCP/IP
