    Performance modeling of e-procurement workflow using Generalised Stochastic Petri net (GSPN)

    This paper proposes a Generalised Stochastic Petri net (GSPN) model representing a generic e-procurement workflow process. The model displays the dynamic behaviour of the system and shows the inter relationship of process activities. An analysis based on matrix equation approach enabled users to analyse the critical system's states, and thus justify the process performance. The results obtained allow users for better decision making in improving e-procurement workflow performance

    User friendly signal processing web services: The joint Max Planck Fraunhofer project AVATecH aims to support the very time intensive work of annotating audio and video recordings, letting signal processing modules (recognizers) assist annotators. -*- We designed a small, flexible framework where XML metadata describes input, output and settings of recognizers. Building blocks are audio and video files, annotation tiers and numerical data, packaged in simple formats. Text pipes allow flexibility in implementation details. The popular TLA ELAN software even lets the user control recognizers directly in their annotation environment: It generates consistent user interfaces for all installed recognizers based on their metadata. -*- We realized that full recognizers can be inconvenient to install for the user. Hardware, operating system and license requirements can add complexity. AVATecH supported intranet recognizers early, but those are limited by the need for shared network drives between user and server. -*- Recently, we developed a system where recognizers are run on a server using the free open source CLAM software. With suitable configuration, CLAM can run any command line tool, controlled by remote REST requests. On the user side, only a small proxy tool is installed instead of a real recognizer: The tool dynamically mimicks a recognizer based on the same metadata as before, but actually transfers data to a remote server and back where the real recognizer is installed. -*- We present details of our setup and workflow, with an outlook towards future extensions within the successor project, AUVIS

    Supporting Special-Purpose Health Care Models via Web Interfaces

    The potential of the Web, via both the Internet and intranets, to facilitate development of clinical information systems has been evident for some time. Most Web-based clinical workstations interfaces, however, provide merely a loose collection of access channels. There are numerous examples of systems for access to either patient data or clinical guidelines, but only isolated cases where clinical decision support is presented integrally with the process of patient care, in particular, in the form of active alerts and reminders based on patient data. Moreover, pressures in the health industry are increasing the need for doctors to practice in accordance with Âżbest practiceÂż guidelines and often to operate under novel health-care arrangements. We present the Care Plan On-Line (CPOL) system, which provides intranet-based support for the SA HealthPlus Coordinated Care model for chronic disease management. We describe the interface design rationale of CPOL and its implementation framework, which is flexible and broadly applicable to support new health care models over intranets or the Internet

    webXice: an Infrastructure for Information Commerce on the WWW

    Systems for information commerce on the WWW have to support flexible business models if they should be able to cover a wide range of requirements imposed by the different types of information businesses. This leads to non-trivial functional and security requirements both on the provider and consumer side, for which we introduce an architecture and a system implementation, webXice. We focus on the question, how participants with minimal technological requisites, i.e. solely standard Web browsers available, can be technologically enabled to articipate in the information commerce at a system level, while not sacrificing the functionality and security required by an autonomous participant in an information commerce scenario. In particular, we propose an implementation strategy to efficiently support persistent message logging for light-weight clients, that enables clients to collect and manage non-reputiable messages as proofs. We believe that the capability to support minimal system platforms is a necessary precondition for the wide-spread use of any information commerce infrastructure
