    Performance Evaluation of Road Traffic Control Using a Fuzzy Cellular Model

    In this paper a method is proposed for performance evaluation of road traffic control systems. The method is designed to be implemented in an on-line simulation environment, which enables optimisation of adaptive traffic control strategies. Performance measures are computed using a fuzzy cellular traffic model, formulated as a hybrid system combining cellular automata and fuzzy calculus. Experimental results show that the introduced method allows the performance to be evaluated using imprecise traffic measurements. Moreover, the fuzzy definitions of performance measures are convenient for uncertainty determination in traffic control decisions.Comment: The final publication is available at http://www.springerlink.co

    Thermal error modelling of machine tools based on ANFIS with fuzzy c-means clustering using a thermal imaging camera

    Thermal errors are often quoted as being the largest contributor to CNC machine tool errors, but they can be effectively reduced using error compensation. The performance of a thermal error compensation system depends on the accuracy and robustness of the thermal error model and the quality of the inputs to the model. The location of temperature measurement must provide a representative measurement of the change in temperature that will affect the machine structure. The number of sensors and their locations are not always intuitive and the time required to identify the optimal locations is often prohibitive, resulting in compromise and poor results. In this paper, a new intelligent compensation system for reducing thermal errors of machine tools using data obtained from a thermal imaging camera is introduced. Different groups of key temperature points were identified from thermal images using a novel schema based on a Grey model GM (0, N) and Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering method. An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System with Fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM-ANFIS) was employed to design the thermal prediction model. In order to optimise the approach, a parametric study was carried out by changing the number of inputs and number of membership functions to the FCM-ANFIS model, and comparing the relative robustness of the designs. According to the results, the FCM-ANFIS model with four inputs and six membership functions achieves the best performance in terms of the accuracy of its predictive ability. The residual value of the model is smaller than ± 2 μm, which represents a 95% reduction in the thermally-induced error on the machine. Finally, the proposed method is shown to compare favourably against an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model

For a clear application of such techniques in mathematics education, there should be a clear distinction between these techniques. A recently developed theory of fuzzy concepts can be applied to analyse the four mentioned concepts. For all four techniques one can pose the question of their relationship to deduction, induction and abduction as logical principles.     Neuro-fuzzy knowledge processing in intelligent learning environments for improved student diagnosis

    In this paper, a neural network implementation for a fuzzy logic-based model of the diagnostic process is proposed as a means to achieve accurate student diagnosis and updates of the student model in Intelligent Learning Environments. The neuro-fuzzy synergy allows the diagnostic model to some extent "imitate" teachers in diagnosing students' characteristics, and equips the intelligent learning environment with reasoning capabilities that can be further used to drive pedagogical decisions depending on the student learning style. The neuro-fuzzy implementation helps to encode both structured and non-structured teachers' knowledge: when teachers' reasoning is available and well defined, it can be encoded in the form of fuzzy rules; when teachers' reasoning is not well defined but is available through practical examples illustrating their experience, then the networks can be trained to represent this experience. The proposed approach has been tested in diagnosing aspects of student's learning style in a discovery-learning environment that aims to help students to construct the concepts of vectors in physics and mathematics. The diagnosis outcomes of the model have been compared against the recommendations of a group of five experienced teachers, and the results produced by two alternative soft computing methods. The results of our pilot study show that the neuro-fuzzy model successfully manages the inherent uncertainty of the diagnostic process; especially for marginal cases, i.e. where it is very difficult, even for human tutors, to diagnose and accurately evaluate students by directly synthesizing subjective and, some times, conflicting judgments

    Fuzzy uncertainty modelling for project planning; application to helicopter maintenance

    Maintenance is an activity of growing interest specially for critical systems. Particularly, aircraft maintenance costs are becoming an important issue in the aeronautical industry. Managing an aircraft maintenance center is a complex activity. One of the difficulties comes from the numerous uncertainties that affect the activity and disturb the plans at short and medium term. Based on a helicopter maintenance planning and scheduling problem, we study in this paper the integration of uncertainties into tactical and operational multiresource, multi-project planning (respectively Rough Cut Capacity Planning and Resource Constraint Project Scheduling Problem). Our main contributions are in modelling the periodic workload on tactical level considering uncertainties in macro-tasks work contents, and modelling the continuous workload on operational level considering uncertainties in tasks durations. We model uncertainties by a fuzzy/possibilistic approach instead of a stochastic approach since very limited data are available. We refer to the problems as the Fuzzy RoughCut Capacity Problem (FRCCP) and the Fuzzy Resource Constraint Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP).We apply our models to helicopter maintenance activity within the frame of the Helimaintenance project, an industrial project approved by the French Aerospace Valley cluster which aims at building a center for civil helicopter maintenance

    Sustainability ranking of desalination plants using Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems

    As water desalination continues to expand globally, desalination plants are continually under pressure to meet the requirements of sustainable development. However, the majority of desalination sustainability research has focused on new desalination projects, with limited research on sustainability performance of existing desalination plants. This is particularly important while considering countries with limited resources for freshwater such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as it is heavily reliant on existing desalination infrastructure. In this regard, the current research deals with the sustainability analysis of desalination processes using a generic sustainability ranking framework based on Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems. The fuzzy-based models were validated using data from two typical desalination plants in the UAE. The promising results obtained from the fuzzy ranking framework suggest this more in-depth sustainability analysis should be beneficial due to its flexibility and adaptability in meeting the requirements of desalination sustainability
